A reason for the recusals was not given, but it becomes evident pretty quickly when you read the details of the case. The suit was brought by a New Jersey resident, Mac Truong, as a means of targeting the Texas Heartbeat Act. The claim in the case is that this Texas state legislation is in violation of the Constitution, and that presents the first problem in this Hail Mary attempt. Since the highest court in the land determined that abortion law would be sent back to the states, the Texas law cannot be found in Constitutional conflict. After the initial case was set to be dismissed, Truong appealed to the 5th Circuit, and when his case failed there, it went before SCOTUS. The case is rather scattershot, with defendants named including the state’s Republican Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, and former President Donald Trump. Others are also named, and this is where the case unraveled.

Nathan Wade, the Georgia prosecutor leading the case against former President Donald Trump, was held in contempt of court last year for defying an order during his divorce. Around the same time that Wade had been preparing to indict the former president for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election in the Peach State, a judge in Cobb County, Georgia, ruled he had “willfully” failed to turn over documents about his income. Wade’s wife later said that the income included money he had made during his work on the Trump case. A Wisconsin judge has ruled that state law does not allow the use of mobile absentee voting sites, siding with Republicans who had challenged Racine’s use of a voting van that traveled around the city in 2022. Republicans opposed the use of the van, the only one of its kind in Wisconsin, saying its use was against the law, increased the chances of voter fraud and was used to bolster Democratic turnout. Racine officials, the Democratic National Committee and the Milwaukee-based voting advocacy group Black Leaders Organizing for Communities refuted those claims and defended the legality of the van, saying there was no specific prohibition against it. The lawsuit over the mobile voting van is one of several in battleground Wisconsin that could affect voting rules in the upcoming presidential election. The van was first used in Racine’s municipal elections in 2022. It was purchased with grant money Racine received from the Center for Tech and Civic Life, the nonprofit created by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife. Republicans have been critical of the grants, calling the money “Zuckerbucks” that they say was used to tilt turnout in Democratic areas.

The last time a federal judge ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to turn over data from its COVID-19 vaccine active surveillance program – which enrolled 8.5 million participants from December 2020 to April 2021 – the public learned the earliest recipients reported a surprisingly high rate of listed moderate-to-severe adverse events following the jabs, about one-in-three. The V-safe mobile app surveys didn’t provide checkboxes for chest pain and other cardiac symptoms, requiring users to enter them as “free-text entries” up to 250 characters, despite the CDC including myocarditis and pericarditis as “adverse events of special interest” in the initial V-safe protocol. Now those 7.8 million entries are coming to the public over the next year under a different Freedom of Information Act lawsuit than the Informed Consent Action Network litigation that prompted the release of checkbox data more than a year ago. he Senate border deal currently being negotiated reportedly would allow about 5,000 illegal immigrants into the U.S. per day and make many of them eligible for work permits. Government relations director at the Immigration Accountability Project, Rosemary Jenks, said in an interview with The Washington Times that the current deal includes a right to government-funded lawyers for illegal immigrant children who are having a hard time getting through the immigration courts, and legal immigration would be expanded. Republicans in exchange would get to have more power when it comes to deportation, but not any crackdown on Homeland Security’s power to “parole” illegal immigrants directly into the country. Jenks told the outlet that this deal would do little to nothing to stop the flow of people coming into the U.S. on a daily basis.

It was not easy to read a book about Israel’s military excellence in the wake of the worst military and intelligence failure in the country’s history since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. It was also hard to ignore that the book was published by Harvard University, which has been at the center of an anti-Semitism scandal that drags on to this day. But in the wake of the October 7 slaughter perpetrated by the Iran-backed Hamas terrorist organization, the story of Israel’s military innovations must not be forgotten. This is the country that made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) a staple on every battlefield. It’s the country that developed the rear-engine Merkava tank that has forever changed armored warfare. Israel developed the Trophy active protection system that has protected those tanks, as well as tanks operated by the United States’ soldiers. Similarly, the Israelis developed the helmet-mounted display used in the F-35 multirole fighter flown by the United States and other Western allies. The Israelis also developed the remarkable Iron Dome missile defense system that has knocked thousands of threatening rockets out of the sky. In a sense, it is the success of these and other systems that paved the way for the Hamas assault.

Chapados: Study: Transgender people less likely to be employed, have worse mental and physical health

A study by a health care data and analytics company showed that transgender people are less likely to be employed, have health insurance, or be married. They also are “at a higher risk” of developing mental and behavioral issues, getting sexually transmitted infections, and using and abusing substances.

The study was conducted by Definitive Healthcare, a company that has described its mission as wanting to “transform data, analytics and expertise into healthcare commercial intelligence.” The study looked at medical interventions in those who identify as transgender and the volume of individuals who are suffering from gender dysphoria in the United States.

n an election with global implications, Taiwan’s voters on Saturday chose Lai Ching-te as their next president, staying the course with a candidate from the country’s ruling party that rejects mainland China’s claims over the island. Lai, a member of the governing Democratic Progressive Party, was declared the winner over Hou Yu-ih, a member of the more China-friendly Nationalist Party. Hou conceded hours after voting ended. Lai secured 5.5 million votes while his opponent Hou Yu-ih of the Nationalist Party got 4.6 million votes. Former mayor of the capital Taipei, Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People’s Party, finished third with 3.6 million votes.
