AI moves us at exponential rate from obscurity to the impenetrable darkness of the so-called “black box.” As the computer scientist Stephen Wolfram noted when he testified before the Senate in 2019, “If we want to seriously use the power of computation—and AI—then inevitably there won’t be a ‘human-explainable’ story about what’s happening inside.” America was founded on the ideal that individual citizens, through their free and informed actions, should participate in their government. But for a free people to be participants in the making of their own laws and the meaning of their own lives, they must be knowledgeable about the world around them. Centralized applications of AI that invisibly alter the architecture of perception and reality—for instance by performing mass censorship of certain phrases or narratives—make such knowledge impossible. Moreover, as the writer James Poulos notes, the AI approach to governance undermines individuals’ faith in their own capacity for reasoned action because it is “driven by a logic of seeing technology as better and stronger than humanity.”

Coates: Court Rejects Claim That Copper Mine Land Is Needed For Jaguar Preservation

A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that regulators were wrong to conclude that parts of Pima County targeted for a copper mine are critical to the preservation of endangered jaguars. The ruling by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturns a lower court decision and revives hopes for the Rosemont Copper mine, which supporters said would bring hundreds of jobs and billions of dollars in revenue to the region.But in a dissent, Judge Holly Thomas said the record “amply supports” the government’s finding that the land in Pima County is “critical to the conservation of the jaguar as it faces threats elsewhere in its range.” […] But Hudbay Minerals Inc., the Canadian mining company behind the Rosemont mine, said it was pleased the court had found that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service “erred in its designation of the northern Santa Ritas as jaguar critical habitat.” […] . . . critics note that the mine will consume enormous amounts of water and point to reports of the troubled history of water pollution from copper sulfide mines.

Totenberg: U.S. Supreme Court hands social media companies a major victory

It was the first test case involving a legal shield adopted 27 years ago to protect internet companies from lawsuits. NPR legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg reports. NINA TOTENBERG, BYLINE: In two separate cases, the families of people killed in terrorist bombing attacks sued Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, claiming that the companies had violated the Federal Anti-Terrorism Act, which specifically allows people to sue for aiding and abetting terrorism. The families allege that the companies did more than passively provide platforms for communication. Rather, they contended that by recommending ISIS videos to those who might be interested, the internet platforms were seeking to get more viewers and increase their ad revenue even though they knew that ISIS was using their services as a recruitment tool. But today, the Supreme Court unanimously rejected those claims. Writing for the court, Justice Clarence Thomas said . . .

Simonson: Biden Justice Department Declined To Prosecute Disgraced Soros-Backed U.S. Attorney

The Biden Department of Justice declined to prosecute disgraced George Soros-backed U.S. attorney Rachael Rollins after its own inspector general recommended it do so, according to the watchdog’s report. The Office of the Inspector General on Wednesday released a 155-page report that detailed Rollins’s numerous ethical violations. Nestled in a footnote, the inspector general revealed that the Justice Department ignored its suggestion to prosecute Rollins on charges of lying to federal investigators. The inspector general found that Rollins gave several false statements to its investigators during a December 2022 interview, a federal offense that is punishable by up to five years in prison. It is unclear why the Justice Department declined to bring charges against Rollins, who resigned just hours before the inspector general released its report. But it isn’t the first time the Massachusetts prosecutor safely navigated a controversy.

Emergency Medical Services treated and transported the teen, who later died at the hospital. The Medical Examiners office has not released any details about the medical emergency that caused the teen’s death. The identity of the teenager has also not been released. The swimmer was at a community swimming event not put on by the Hawaii High School Athletics Association.

Micky Geller from Carp, Ontario, Canada, was a freshman at the University of Lafayette-Indiana studying kinesiology when he died on May 6. No further details on his death have been released, with his passing leaving his friends and loved ones in deep shock. Geller was a member of the National Champion Ragin’ Cajuns Waterski Team, as well as the Canadian Junior National Waterski team, and was ranked sixth in the world in the U-21 jump, according to his obit.

Former President Donald Trump told The Messenger on Monday that he will release all of the files related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy if he regains the White House in 2025. Interest in the JFK assassination has never gone away, but it was given a new boost when Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the nephew of President Kennedy (and the son of Kennedy’s brother, Robert, who was also assassinated) stated last week that there was “overwhelming” evidence that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was involved in Kennedy’s killing. […] During his presidency, Trump ordered the release of thousands of files, previously kept secret, concerning the Kennedy assassination, but opted to defer to the judgment of the CIA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to not release about 300 hundred files. But after the FBI and the CIA both essentially were actively involved in opposing Trump before, during, and after his presidency, perhaps Trump is not as trusting of the intelligence community as he was early in his tenure in office.

Chaitin: Dems Push Biden To Consider 14th Amendment In Debt Ceiling Fight

Nearly a dozen left-wing senators — including high-profile members Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and John Fetterman (D-PA) — sent a letter to Biden on Thursday warning that it may be the president’s only option to avoid a default if Republicans don’t agree to a deal. The senators cite Section Four of the 14th Amendment, which states the “validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.” Biden said last week he would consider invoking the 14th Amendment, noting that leftist Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe “thinks that it would be legitimate,” though the president warned the matter would likely be litigated and “in the meantime, without an extension, it would still end up in the same place.” While Republicans have highlighted other legal experts who have argued against the president trying to employ the 14th Amendment, even officials within Biden’s own administration have expressed hesitation. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said in recent days that invoking the 14th Amendment is “legally questionable” and could create a “constitutional crisis.”

A strange story turns out not to be so strange after all. A woman accused of spray-painting antisemitic graffiti at the Woodward Avenue Shul Jewish Center in Royal Oak last week has been charged, police said. Randi Lucille Nord was arraigned Wednesday through 44th District Court in Royal Oak, records show. She was charged with ethnic intimidation, a felony carrying a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $5,000 fine, and malicious destruction of a building, a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail and a fine three times the amount of the destruction, police said.

Sibarium: DC Bar Exam Will Require All Test-Takers To Wear Masks For 12-Hour Exam

“At this time applicants will be required to wear a mask fully covering their mouth and nose during the exam,” the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, which administers the test, told registered test-takers in a Thursday memo. “Any additional COVID-19 safety and health procedures will be announced closer to the exam.” The requirement comes on the heels of a German study that found masks expose users to toxic levels of carbon dioxide, which can cause “difficulty concentrating,” “reduced cognitive performance, impaired decision-making and reduced speed of cognitive solutions.” It also follows a study by the Cochrane Review—long considered the Bible for evidence-based medicine—that found masking “probably makes little or no difference” in the spread of COVID-19. Though the D.C. court system dropped its mask mandate in April, face coverings are still required at the D.C. Court of Appeals, according to an announcement for the 2023 bar exam.
