The annual reckoning with the taxman, whose “inevitable” tag-teaming with the Grim Reaper makes both equally unappealing, hits most Americans. […] What Desmond doesn’t tell you is his working assumption: that the money you make actually also belongs to the federal government, and your non-deductible dependent, Uncle Sam, should be able to tell you how much he gets. (And he wants more.) That is the question about which Americans desperately need to get clear. The money that you earn — whose is it? If you’re out of touch with the latest in leftist and “progressive” thinking, it’s not really yours. Sure, you worked for it, but because society provided a road for you to get to work, an economy to work in, and in some instances a statutorily fixed workday that allows you to drag yourself home to bed, it’s really also the government’s money. And you “rich” people: You’re just bilking the government by wanting to keep more of it, especially through legal tax means.

Lee Smith: Why the Iran Deal Matters
How did we get here? The current state of affairs began when Joe Biden’s former boss Barack Obama legalized a terror state’s nuclear weapons program. Despite what its publicists claimed, the purpose of the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was never to stop Iran from getting the bomb. Rather, the tens of billions of dollars that Obama paid the clerical regime, which included planeloads of cash, was to facilitate construction of the nuclear weapons program under the protective umbrella of an international agreement backed by the United States. Even a cursory glance at the agreement’s clauses restricting Iranian nuclear and other activities reveals the truth—they are called “sunset clauses” because they were designed to expire. And once they expired, Iran’s industrial-size nuclear weapons program would be entirely legal under the continuing protection of the United States. No, no, say JCPOA advocates and defenders—the Iran deal was constructed to prevent Iran from ever getting a bomb. And at the time that Obama proposed his plan, it seemed inconceivable that the president would mislead Americans about something as serious as legalizing the nuclear weapons program of a terror state that has been killing Americans since its inception in 1979. Surely, Obama had some more conventional idea of arms control in mind. His critics must be conspiracy theorists, projecting their own pyromania onto the righteous president, probably because they were racists, or Zionists, or both. The Iranian emigres and Saudi analysts who expressed their shock at the idea of giving Iran the bomb must have their own local axes to grind.

Though President Biden did the right thing by deploying American assets to assist Israel’s defensive response, the reality is that things never would have gotten to this point had it not been for his accommodating policies toward Iran and months of chastising Israel. Looking further back, the origins of last night’s Iranian aggression could be traced to his former boss. In pursuing a disastrous nuclear deal, the Obama administration sought to reorient the Middle East around an improved relationship with Iran and more “daylight” between the U.S. and Israel. In pursuit of the deal, the administration overlooked Iran’s malign activity around the world — its sponsorship of terrorism and its destabilizing attacks through its proxies in the region. The ultimate deal funneled tens of billions of dollars in sanctions relief to Iran and allowed the regime to become a greater conventional threat, all while preserving its nuclear ambitions in the long term.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED? Israel-Iran Over the past six weeks there has been an escalation in Israeli air strikes against Iranian, Hezbollah, and other pro-Iranian militia locations in Syria. The most powerful strike, on 1 April, killed the commander, the deputy commander, and several staff members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard force coordinating the actions of all the allied and proxy Iranian forces operating against Israel. These are the highest-ranking Iranian officers to have been killed since the 2020 assassination by the US of Qassem Soleimani, who was chief of the Iranian al-Quds organization and responsible for all Iranian operations outside Iran aimed at the US, Israel, and pro-western Arab states. The targets of the 1 April strike were convening in a building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus. The Iranians claim the building was in fact a consulate, so Israel placed its embassies across the world on alert for a tit-for-tat retaliation. During the night of 13-14 April, after two weeks of threats, the Iranians retaliated with their first-ever direct attack from Iranian territory into Israel. he New York Times reported Thursday that President Joe Biden is planning to expand a pair of national monuments in California by roughly 130,000 acres, citing two people familiar with the plans. “The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument will each get new boundaries designed to protect land of cultural significance to Native American tribes,” the Times revealed. The two monuments were established by President Barack Obama using the 1906 Antiquities Act. The century-plus-old law allows the commander-in-chief to unilaterally place additional public lands under enhanced federal protections by executive order. While a national park is a large swath of land protected by an act of Congress, land with a “national monument” designation protects a “specific natural, cultural or historic feature.” The 1906 law, however, requires that the area preserved must be “the smallest area compatible with the proper care and management of the objects to be protected.” President Obama had a habit of violating the law’s mandates to establish quasi-national parks without congressional approval. Le Mahieu: Man Suspected Of Killing Memphis Cop Was Out Of Jail On Felony Charges
The 18-year-old accused of killing a Tennessee police officer and injuring two others when they were responding to a suspicious vehicle call early Friday morning was out of jail on felony charges at the time of the incident. While responding to the call, investigators say Memphis police officer Joseph McKinney was killed by Jaylen Lobley, who was in the vehicle and fired out at the officers. The other officers with McKinney returned fire and two were injured by gunfire. One officer was hospitalized in non-critical condition and one received medical attention at the scene of the shooting.

A City of Syracuse police officer and Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputy were shot and killed in the line of duty Sunday night. “We lost two heroes tonight,” Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile said at an early morning briefing outside Upstate University Hospital. The two were among the officers who responded to a home on Darien Drive to investigate a stolen vehicle, Syracuse Police say.

Among the over sixty excellent essays to be found in From Union to Empire I wish to point to three that I would recommend for your particular attention. In the essential opening essay, entitled The Jeffersonian Conservative Tradition, Dr. Wilson attempts to answer the question “what should American conservatism seek to conserve.” In brief his answer is “the federal and constitutional republic bequeathed to us by that unique event, the American Revolution, a “revolution” which was prudential rather than revolutionary…a revolution for life, liberty, and property […] a war of national independence waged without mass romantic nationalism.” He describes the essential elements of the conservative American polity as […] I recommend for your consideration this very worthy collection of compelling essays by a distinguished historian in the Jeffersonian tradition. For as Dr. Wilson makes clear “it may be that this sense of self-determination of free men enjoyed by our Fathers is an impractical goal, not fully realizable in the modern world, but unless we recover it at least as an ideal and a point of reference toward which we direct our collective selves, the American experiment has failed.”
