The proposed WHO Pandemic Preparedness Treaty threatens to give unprecedented power in real or maybe even perceived “public health emergencies of international concern.” Arguably, there is ample evidence to prove that calls for a pandemic response were primarily political and never necessary. That really is the point. In other words, should Americans be held hostage to policies that are mainly political and may have little to do with safety and national security? First, the Intelligence Community (IC) tells congress, particularly the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, that all hell will break loose if they don’t reauthorize full electronic surveillance of Americans. Congress is petrified of the IC. Speaker Johnson and all of the key participants are totally siloed from understanding that 702 has nothing to do with incidental collection of American data whilst the honorable IC were doing foreign intercepts. Johnson and most Republicans believe the IC nonsense. They really do. The politicians and their key staff cannot fathom how the FBI, DOJ, NSD, DHS and contractors use this database to conduct political and “other” (think corporate espionage for sale) surveillance. They really do think the IC is full of honorable rank-and-file. They are inside a DC bubble.

In 2022, investigative journalist Christopher Brunet pointed out that, despite billing herself as a macroeconomist, Cook had never published a peer-reviewed macroeconomics article and had misrepresented her publication history in her CV, claiming that she had published an article in the journal American Economic Review. In truth, the article was published in American Economic Review Papers and Proceedings, a less prestigious, non-peer-reviewed magazine.

This is an ambitious book with an ambitious task, maybe even an impossible one. After all, the goal of its author, Brad Wilcox, is not just to save America, but to “save civilization.” His presumption seems to be that saving the former offers at least a chance at ultimately saving the latter. To be sure, rescuing civilization itself is a much larger and much more daunting task, but this is the undisguised message of his subtitle. And yet Wilcox may well have a point—or at least a powerful reason to undertake this task. Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, Professor Wilcox is an ivory-tower oxymoron. Among the many caps that he wears is that of a conservative sociologist. As such, he must be a virtual loner among his colleagues. And yet, as that loner, Wilcox seems determined to do his part to demonstrate that the late Harry Jaffa also had a point.

But what those justices did was precisely the opposite. If you were a conservative on this court who hewed to the meaning of the law, you knew the political peril you were courting. Already the left in the Democratic Party and the media are targeting two of them for removal from the bench when they appear on the ballot in the fall. […] Anyone with an elementary understanding of Arizona politics knew that the decision to uphold the hard-headed and motheaten 1864 abortion law would politically hand every advantage in this state to the Democratic Party and liberals who want to remove all regulation to abortion. Turner: Reevaluating the U.S.-Israel Relationship
The question of the Israel-U.S. relationship has taken center stage in American political discourse as the Gaza War grinds past the six-month point and civilian casualties mount. The anti-Zionist Left, naturally enough, has been demanding a ceasefire since before the sun had set on October 7, but foreign policy “realist” voices have been heard from, too. John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago has long held that the closeness of the relationship between the U.S. and Israel is a mistake in American global strategy, and he has been making the rounds, explaining his view. CATO Institute analyst Jon Hoffman similarly argues—in a major piece in Foreign Policy that was amplified by Kenneth Roth, the dean of enlightened Foggy Bottom humanitarianism—that “it’s past time for a fundamental reevaluation of the U.S.-Israel relationship.” But the “realist” argument vis-à-vis Israel is wrong. America has a strategic interest both in supporting Israel and in opposing the Palestinian Arabs and their cause. Hoffman’s claim regarding American national interest focuses on two major points: maximizing U.S. popularity with the world and humanitarian concerns. But America has other important national interests in the Middle East (and the world) that the realist argument ignores. The U.S. has a primary interest in ensuring its own physical security and that of its citizenry from foreign attack. Palestinian groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, along with their allies and backers in the Iranian proxy groups and Sunni jihadist groups that also support them, all target the U.S. and its citizens for terror attacks.

Among the many destructive ideas loose in American education is that black students should not be expected to master standard English because doing so is demeaning and demoralizing for them. Standard English is part of the power structure of “whiteness” that must be overthrown before we can have an equitable society. Professors at esteemed universities are making that argument and it appears to be catching on. Faculty who want to prove their “anti-racist” dedication are changing their teaching and grading to avoid penalizing black students who, after all, already face terrible obstacles in a society that supposedly looks down on them. The most prominent advocate of this position is University of Michigan professor April Baker-Bell. In her view, “traditional approaches to language education do not account for the emotional harm or consequences these approaches have on Black students’ sense of self and identity.”
Before we go any further, do all black students suffer emotional harm if their English is corrected? There are many black scholars who write in perfect English. I don’t think either Thomas Sowell or Walter Williams ever decried their anguish at having to adopt standard English in their academic work.

The BBC reported on multiple photographs that “show the bodies of women naked from the waist down, or with their underwear ripped to one side, legs splayed, with signs of trauma to their genitals and legs.” The New York Times saw a photograph of a woman’s corpse with “dozens of nails driven into her thighs and groin.” A video viewed by the same paper appears to show two women “shot directly in their vaginas.” NPR viewed photos of “several suspected victims of sexual violence.” […] Despite evidence of rape, those defending Hamas from charges of sexual violence point to a lack of forensic evidence — the kind that might be revealed at the denouement of a television crime show. Indeed, Israel’s frontier with Gaza on and after Oct 7 was less untouched crime scene and more battlefield and disaster zone. But this is neither exonerating nor unusual. “There is very much what’s known as the CSI effect, where there is a perception that without forensic evidence or DNA, then you don’t have a case,” an expert on sexual violence in conflict zones told NPR. “And that’s just patently not true.” In this case, the full CSI treatment was impracticable. “As is common in war, collection of physical evidence was hindered by ongoing combat and a large, chaotic crime scene,” NPR reported.

Pandemic Panic was a fascinating book to read, especially for a lawyer like me. It very quickly had my blood pressure way up as it reminded me of the nearly three years of governmental thuggery, heavy-handedness, imposition of idiotic and often irrational rules, and resort to lockdown lunacy. If that last sentence sounds as though I was a lockdown skeptic, full disclosure I was. From virtually day one this native born Canadian, who has lived in Australia for two decades, was an open skeptic of the lockdowns on the pages of the Spectator Australia, the British Lockdown Sceptic website (now Daily Sceptic), and once or twice in Law & Liberty in the US. I even had a couple of published peer-reviewed law articles on the topic rejected for listing by SSRN (presumably because only public health types were then deemed suitable to comment on this fiasco, and only lockdown cheerleader ones at that). Right from the start it seemed silly to me, verging on crazy, to think that in conditions of great uncertainty what you ought to do is proceed directly to some version of the precautionary principle on steroids, thereby mimicking the authoritarian response of the Chinese politburo – and in the process throw away a hundred years of data that informed the then pandemic plans of the British government (and the WHO for that matter) and that unambiguously rejected lockdowns. […] Put more bluntly, after decades of working in university law schools around the Anglosphere and knowing the lawyerly and judicial caste very well indeed I can tell you that I fully agree with the sentiment William Buckley conveyed when he said that he would rather be governed by the first 2,000 people in the Boston telephone directory than by the Harvard University faculty. For me, make that also the lawyerly caste that gives us our top judges. The authors of this book implicitly disagree with that core sentiment of mine, though our view of the pandemic overreach is much the same. Wherever readers stand on both those issues, this is a book well worth reading.

S. repeatedly raped both children, with the help of Asia R. A., who prepared a room and put make-up on one of the girls, they said. The girls were punished with ‘harsh physical violence’ when they made what the suspects viewed as mistakes. The elder girl was beaten with a broomstick while the younger one’s hand was scalded with hot water, the prosecutors said. The suspects were arrested Tuesday in Regensburg and the Roth district, both in the southern state of Bavaria.
