Burrow: US Launches Retaliatory Airstrikes Against Houthis After Months of Attacks in Red Sea
The U.S. and United Kingdom conducted retaliatory strikes against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen on Thursday evening Washington, D.C., time following a cascade of attacks on commercial shipping, the White House said. The Houthis have launched at least 27 drone and missile attacks against commercial vessels transiting near the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the U.S. military said Thursday, operations the group says come in opposition to Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza. U.S. and U.K. military assets, with assistance from Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, struck “a number of targets” in Yemen early morning Friday Sana’a time, the White House said, and is the first time the U.S. has conducted deliberate strikes against targets linked to the Houthis since the group began attacking international shipping in late 2023.

US and UK armed forces released clips of their fighter jets taking off ahead of their bombing runs. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan furiously condemned the strikes in a statement this morning, accusing the US and UK of turning the Red Sea into a ‘sea of blood’. Iran and Russia also accused the West of ‘illegal’ and escalatory actions. The Houthi rebels also vowed to make allies behind the attacks ‘pay a heavy price’ for the ‘blatant aggression’ they claim has killed at least five fighters. […] In Washington Democratic progressives on Capitol Hill, including members of the left-wing group known as The Squad, responded with fury because Biden didn’t seek their approval first for the strikes. Less than 18 months after Democrats rammed through a series of price controls on what Medicare pays for prescription drugs — the better to pay for Tesla subsidies and other green pork — and guess what has happened? Drugmakers are responding to the (bad) incentives Democrats created. Just before the holidays, Bloomberg reported on how many pharmaceutical companies have delayed bringing products to market to maximize the revenue they can generate before Medicare gets to “negotiate” drug prices. It demonstrates the ultimate losers from the entire “negotiation” process: patients who need life-enhancing, or even life-saving, new treatments. […] The likeliest victims of this new pharmaceutical squeeze are patients with more obscure diseases and cancers that affect only a few thousand patients each year. If a pharmaceutical company has the choice between getting a drug’s first approval for a condition that affects a few thousand people or a few million, which do you think it will choose? Bloomberg also notes that while drugs that treat one rare disease have an exemption from drug “negotiations” under the law, drugs that treat two rare diseases do not. This provision will discourage companies from submitting approvals for a second rare disease, again disadvantaging patients with lesser-known conditions.

Hundreds of migrants who recently arrived in Chicago have been staying in warming buses provided by the city and they haven’t taken a shower for days. Many are hungry and sick with colds. Each night, they climb into eight warming buses to sleep at the Office of Emergency Management’s “landing zone” in the West Loop. The number of migrants has climbed to 324. Wednesday morning, some could be seen tossing a football and running to stay warm. Others blew on their hands for warmth and scrounged for food. “If you’re not given food, you go to extreme measures. You look for food in the trash,” said Robinson Mendez, 30, from Valencia, Venezuela.

Vu: House votes to overturn Biden’s ‘Buy America’ waiver for EV chargers
One of the first votes of the year is a disapproval resolution to overturn the Biden administration’s decision to waive “Buy America” requirements for government-funded electric chargers — a move that has received flak from both Republicans and Democrats alike, who argue the waiver serves as a giveaway to China, the leader in the electric vehicle and battery industry. The measure passed the House on Thursday 209-198, with just two Democrats voting with Republicans to pass the measure. Two Republicans voted against the resolution. The disapproval resolution was supposed to be voted on the day before, but House Republicans voted down a procedural step to bring the bill to the floor over disagreements with leadership on government spending.

Horrifying videos have surfaced of a gang of at least seven men sexually abusing toddlers inside the restroom of a Texas mall, cops say. Arthur Hector Fernandez, 29, a kiosk worker at the Galleria mall in Houston, is charged with assaulting the toddlers and then posting the videos online.
Two friends of Fernandez sometimes left their children, two 2-year-olds, in his care while they worked at the mall, according to police. The FBI says they launched a probe last month after the abuse videos posted on a private online forum were shared by by the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, as reported by the Star-Telegraph.

Aleisia Lynnae Owens, 20, was charged with three counts of homicide, five counts of aggravated assault and one count of endangering the welfare of children in connection to Iris Rita Alfera’s death in Pennsylvania. Iris was taken to the hospital on June 25 and was held in the PICU until she died on June 29. During an investigation, New Castle police found Owens conducted extensive online research on harmful substances for children and it was later revealed the toddler died from acetone poisoning. ‘Tell the world that monsters do exist,’ Crystal Joseph, a relative of Iris, said on behalf of baby’s grieving family.

South Africa launched an emergency case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) arguing that Israel stands in breach of the UN Genocide Convention, signed in 1948 in the wake of the Holocaust. Justice Minister Ronald Lamola told the court on Thursday that Israel had ‘crossed the line’ and that not even the brutality of the Hamas attack, which Pretoria condemned, could justify breaches to the convention.

Newt Gingrich wants Trump-Stefanik ticket
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is urging former President Donald Trump to consider Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as his running mate if he wins the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Gingrich, a regular adviser to Trump, said that the No. 3 House Republican easily is a top pick for Trump’s list. After giving a tribute to former President Richard Nixon at the Richard Nixon Foundation on what would have been his 111th birthday on Tuesday, Gingrich said, “I’m a very big fan of Elise’s. Certainly, if there is a short list for vice president, she should be on it.”
His comments came after the House Republican Conference chairwoman performed well on last Sunday’s Meet the Press. On that show, she said that she would be “honored” to join the Trump ticket.

Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) found that 132 of those in the Catholic clergy and nuns were arrested, kidnapped, and murdered in 2023. All of the stats are likely higher.
