I am a chemical engineer who once did research on removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the emissions of industrial plants or directly from the atmosphere. But I now see CO₂ as a critical plant food necessary for all of life on Earth. Frankly, the more the better. In my former career, I presented my research on optimizing a CO₂ capture system for a coal-fired power plant in the 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Annual Meeting. I also contributed to a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency — Energy, which involved integrating a natural gas power plant with CO₂ capture systems. Despite my career path, I was skeptical about the popular theory of human-induced climate change. Furthermore, at the time, I had a generally positive view of fossil fuels. In fact, my Ph.D. research was funded by Chevron, a descendant of the Standard Oil Co. and among the archvillains of those predicting overheating from emissions of CO₂. Nonetheless, it was not until I read a CO₂ Coalition paper titled “Challenging ‘Net Zero’ with Science” that my eyes were fully opened.

Transgender orthodoxy may soon become a litmus test for parenthood, according to the logic of a new policy working its way through the Department of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden. A new rule in HHS’ Administration for Children and Families would apply the idea that any lack of “affirmation” constitutes a form of child abuse to foster care placements. Once that idea takes root in foster care, child protective services agencies might start applying it more broadly. The rule would reinterpret the Social Security Act, which requires agencies to ensure that each child in foster care receives “safe and proper” care. The rule would lay out steps agencies must take to meet that requirement for “LGBTQI+ children,” defined as kids who “identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, as well as children who are non-binary, or have non-conforming gender identity or expression.” Before agencies place a child with a foster parent, known as a “provider,” that person must “establish an environment free of hostility, mistreatment, or abuse based on the child’s LGBTQI+ status;” receive training “to be prepared with the appropriate knowledge and skills to provide for the needs of the child related to the child’s self-identified sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression;” and must be able to “facilitate the child’s access to age-appropriate resources, services, and activities that support their health and well-being.”

Willie, 47, of Nashville, Illinois, was charged in US District Court for the Southern District of Illinois with 14 felony counts of Interstate Communication of a Threat to Injure. In one message sent from Illinois to Virginia, Willie allegedly described an intention to participate in school shootings and claimed immunity from the FBI.
