(Disarm American citizens) Fogleman: Michigan Governor Signs New Gun Restrictions for Some Convicted of Misdemeanors

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D.) signed House Bill 4945, Senate Bill 471, and Senate Bill 528 into law on Monday. The trio of bills will update Michigan’s criminal sentencing guidelines to ensure that those convicted of domestic violence-related offenses, including misdemeanors, are prohibited from buying or owning firearms and ammunition for eight years after their sentence has been completed. But the bills also swept in hundreds of new offenses unrelated to domestic violence that will now cost someone their gun rights–at least temporarily. […] it is more inclusive than the state’s previous definition, which only applied to crimes punishable by imprisonment for four years or more. Michigan automatically revokes the gun rights of a person convicted of felonies for a minimum of three years following the completion of their sentence and up to five years for persons convicted of “specified felonies,” which typically involve the use of force. By reducing the threshold that triggers disarmament, the law will sweep in dozens of new non-violent and misdemeanor offenses that will temporarily suspend a person’s gun rights. According to a non-partisan legislative analysis of the bill, those include lobbying and campaign finance violations, possessing aquatic or non-aquatic prohibited species, selling a lottery ticket, writing a bad check of at least $100 in value, photographing a dead body in a human grave, practicing as a home contractor without a license, altering a reverse vending machine, and more. […] “The Democrats drew this bill as broadly as possible to take gun rights away from as many people as possible, and then claimed it was all about domestic violence perpetrators,” State Representative Graham Filler (R.) told The Detroit News.

The Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals Tuesday ruled that Maryland’s permit to buy and own a handgun is unconstitutional.

“The challenged law restricts the ability of law-abiding adult citizens to possess handguns, and the state has not presented a historical analogue that justifies its restriction; indeed, it has seemingly admitted that it couldn’t find one,” the majority opinion for the Fourth Circuit Appeals Court said. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said his administration is “looking at all options and reviewing the ruling.”

Because NewsGuard worked with the Defense Department to test its technology, it seems likely the government had some input in determining what qualified as ‘disinformation.’ The for-profit censorship giant NewsGuard is now selling its “Misinformation Fingerprints” technology to private companies to silence Americans’ speech — technology the federal government helped NewsGuard develop to the tune of nearly $750,000 in taxpayer funding. So while NewsGuard is now making headlines for trying to take down Elon Musk’s X, the bigger story concerns the federal government’s funding of the censorship-industrial complex. NewsGuard launched a Thanksgiving-week attack on the social media company former known as Twitter, claiming some 200 ads from prominent advertisers appeared on feeds of users spreading lies about the Israel-Hamas war. Elon Musk returned fire, calling NewsGuard “a propaganda shop” that “uses these reports to pressure companies to buy their ‘fact-checking’ services.” “It’s a profit over any principle model,” the X owner countered. The verbal sparring between Musk and NewsGuard is likely to continue for some time, but the war on free speech being waged by NewsGuard extends much beyond X and is being subsidized by our tax dollars. […] So yes, NewsGuard’s efforts to silence speech and to destroy the financial survival of disfavored outlets and social media companies is a problem. However, fighting NewsGuard’s anti-American attack on free speech isn’t enough. Rather, it is the totality of the federal government’s efforts to control speech that must be destroyed — or our freedom of speech will be.

Three lawsuits attempting to bankrupt a constitutional scholar for giving the prior Republican president legal advice will cost him $3 to $3.5 million, John Eastman said Friday. Eastman was a target of Democrats’ illegal Jan. 6 Committee and has been harassed by the FBI and courts since assisting Donald Trump in 2020 constitutional litigation. “This is what I call the authoritarian moment in our history,” Eastman told reporter Julie Kelly and podcast cohost Liz Sheld. “The whole premise here is: ‘The government has spoken and you continue to say otherwise. Therefore you must be lying.’” Eastman’s legal defense fund has raised more than half a million dollars so far, “less than a third of what we’ve already incurred and less than about a sixth or seventh of what we’re likely to incur before we’re done,” Eastman said. […] In 1997, then Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer suggested presidents may be able to halt civil lawsuits if they claim that it interferes with their work. That was in the landmark decision in a sexual harassment case taken by Arkansas state worker, Paula Jones, against the then president, Bill Clinton. “In a concurring opinion, Breyer noted that if the President could set forth and explain a conflict between a judicial proceeding and his or her ability to perform public duties, the President might be entitled to a postponement,” Golden said. In his decision, Breyer said that the Constitution does not automatically grant the president immunity from civil lawsuits based upon his private conduct. However, Breyer added “once the President sets forth and explains a conflict between judicial proceedings and public duties, the matter changes.”

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin –- who was convicted of murdering George Floyd — was stabbed by another inmate at a federal prison in Arizona on Friday, a source told The Associated Press. Chauvin was seriously injured in the attack around 12:30 p.m. at Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, the Bureau of Prisons told the outlet without naming the inmate. Prison employees performed “life-saving measures” before Chauvin was hospitalized, the federal agency said. Chauvin’s attacker was also taken to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation. […] The stabbing comes just one week after the US Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal of his second-degree murder conviction in the May 2020 death of George Floyd. Chauvin claimed new evidence shows he didn’t cause Floyd’s death, which sparked riots across the country and a prolonged debate on race relations in the US.

Those who wanted Gov. Mark Gordon to engage in a good old-fashioned wrangling of words about his “carbon negative” goals for Wyoming and the causes of climate change will be disappointed. After initially saying he was open and willing to debate the topics, Gordon on Monday formally declined in a letter to the 30 state lawmakers who issued the challenge. A spokesperson for Gordon confirmed to Cowboy State Daily this was the intended message of the letter. In his letter, Gordon said the debate over whether climate change is happening and what are its causes has “raged for over two decades” without a definitive conclusion. “So rather than join the unfruitfulness of that fray, and recognizing that, alas, one side of that argument currently holds most of the levers of regulation, I have sought to position our industries competitively as a practical and more proximate way to attain the stated objective of reducing CO2 in the atmosphere without also putting people out of a job,” Gordon wrote. State Sen. Cheri Steinmetz, R-Lingle, had led the effort to organize a debate between the governor and scientists from CO2 Coalition, an advocacy group that advocates that carbon dioxide doesn’t significantly lead to warming temperatures. In an interview with Newsmax over the weekend, Biggs said that the promise of safety against drunk driving under a kill switch belied the alleged motive of greater governmental control. “Think about this: there’s already black boxes in your cars. We know that abuse of FISA — the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act — against American citizens, we’ve seen the weaponization of government,” said Biggs. “And, ostensibly, this is to stop drunk drivers, supposedly. But this car’s going to be able to monitor the alcohol content of a driver, but they can kill it [the car] at any time because it’s a passive surveillance technique.” Biggs speculated that kill switches in cars could be appropriated for other purposes, such as government-declared emergencies like the ones enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. “So, let’s say you have another COVID outbreak. Let’s say they determine that you haven’t been vaccinated,” said Biggs. “Can they then go ahead and kill switch your car? It’s a control thing.”

A Missouri judge is expected to decide this week if voters in the state will be required to present photo identification in order to cast their ballots in upcoming 2024 elections. In October 2022, Cole County Presiding Judge Jon Beetem had already rejected a lawsuit brought by the Missouri League of Women Voters, NAACP and two voters challenging a law passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature making it mandatory that voters show photo identification to cast a regular ballot. Under the 2022 law, people within a valid government-issued photo ID are still able to submit provisional ballots, which will be counted if they return later that day with a photo ID or if election officials verify their signatures. […] “Missouri has passed voter ID three times to protect our elections and I keep getting sued to stop the law. Today we are back in court defending voter integrity,” Ashcroft added on X Monday. The state legislature previously passed laws in 2006 and again in 2020 to require voters to present photo ID but both those measures were struck down in court.

God help us all. Military Times: It’s one thing to cosplay a member of the U.S. military on Halloween or at comic-cons. But it’s something else entirely for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps to disguise themselves as fans of anime. However, this past weekend at Anime NYC in Manhattan — a convention that bills itself as a “showcase of the best of Japanese pop culture in the biggest city in America” — soldiers and Marines did just that. Why, you might ask? It turns out that they are partners of the show, which ran Nov. 17-19. Their goal is, of course, recruitment.

Durden: Troops Discharged Over COVID-19 Vaccine Refusal Sue US Government For Billions In Lost Wages

The former military members are seeking backpay, damages, and other compensation. Nicholas Bassen, an Army sergeant who was discharged in 2022 for not getting a vaccine, wants compensation of at least $120,000. The suits, filed in recent months, argue that when Congress compelled the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to rescind its COVID-19 vaccine mandate, lawmakers carefully chose their wording. “Congress expressly chose the term ‘rescind’, rather than more customary language such as ‘repeal’, ‘amend’, or ‘clarify’, to direct the DoD and the courts that the rescission should be applied retroactively,” one states. To support their argument, lawyers pointed to U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s Jan. 10 memorandum, in which the retired general rescinded the mandate and ordered military leaders to remove adverse actions pertaining to vaccine refusal from the records of members still serving.

AP: 500 German police raid properties of Hamas supporters throughout the country

Hundreds of police officers searched the properties of Hamas members and followers in Germany on Thursday morning following a formal ban on any activity by or in support of the terrorist group. The German government implemented the ban on Nov. 2 and dissolved Samidoun, a group that was behind a celebration in Berlin of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Germany’s domestic intelligence service estimates that Hamas has around 450 members in the country. Their activities range from expressions of sympathy and propaganda activities to financing and fundraising activities to strengthen the organization abroad.

“We are continuing our consistent action against radical Islamists,” German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said. “By banning Hamas and Samidoun in Germany, we have sent a clear signal that we will not tolerate any glorification or support of Hamas’ barbaric terror against Israel.”

The man suspected of stabbing five in Dublin’s city center on Thursday was arrested earlier this year for possession of a knife. The stabbings prompted a riots and protests in Dublin after it was learned that the suspect is an Algerian immigrant. He had been in Ireland for about 10 years. […] According to The Times, the suspect was the “subject of a deportation order.” The man was also arrested in 2003, and is in his 50s. “However, after a judicial review in the High Court his deportation order was revoked. Sources said in 2008 the Department of Justice granted the man leave to stay in Ireland,” the Times reported. “One said: ‘He was due to be deported 20 years ago, but fought the order for five years. He eventually obtained an Irish passport. He is a naturalized Irish citizen.'”
