To appreciate Labor Day, one needs to know the history preceding it. At the time the United States was founded, most people were self-employed, working as either farmers or in trades, such as: baker, butcher, carpenter, cabinetmaker, upholsterer, tailor, milliner – clothes merchant, cobbler – shoe maker, chandler – candle maker, cooper – barrel maker, wheelwright – wheel craftsman, blacksmith, gunsmith, printer, and apothecary. Then, the Industrial Revolution began in the late 18th century. Where Ireland burned peat from bogs, Britain burned coal from mines. A problem was that mines kept filling up with water. Scottish inventor James Watt came up with an invention to pump water out of mines – a steam pump. Steam was soon harnessed in the early 19th century to not just power pumps, but railroad steam engines, steam boats, and textile manufacturing machines. This led to the creation of factories which could mass produce items inexpensively.

Mittlestadt: Ariz. Gov. Hobbs’ request for Twitter to censor her critics sparks legislative investigation
Democrat Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs asked Twitter, now called X, to censor critics of a tweet she posted while serving in the state legislature. According to Arizona Capitol Oversight, a self-described government accountability website, “then-Secretary Katie Hobbs and her government office engaged in an extensive campaign to censor her critics before and during her campaign for governor.” Hobbs tweeted a comparison likening Trump supporters to Nazis. Hobbs allegedly sought retribution against critics of that tweet. The Tennessee Star reported that Hobbs’ team used an official government email address on August 3, 2022, in the midst of Hobbs’ campaign for governor, to try and get a tweet from the AZGOP censored. The tweet Hobbs tried to have removed said, “Hobbs is failing at her current job…How can she ask anyone to give her a promotion to #AZGOV?” Hobbs’ then-chief of staff, Allie Bonese, emailed the Center for Internet Security and reported it as disinformation, the emails show.

Those sanctions were first imposed by the Trump administration and continued under President Biden. The timing of the phone announcement on Monday, while Raimondo was in Beijing, appeared to be a show of defiance. Chinese state media declared it showed the U.S. that trade war was a “failure.”

For most of the last decade, there has been a ubiquitous media narrative that it was just a matter of time before China’s economy surpassed the U.S. economy. However, in the last year, there has been a neck-snapping reversal in that narrative. Now, there is story after story highlighting the weakness of China’s economy and frequently making dire predictions about its future. But a cooling of the Chinese economy was always in the cards and while it faces serious challenges, it is still going to be the second-largest economy in the world for a long time. […] . . .in the last several years, the government led by Xi Jinping has been pulling back from the market reforms originally instituted by Deng Xiaoping. In doing so, the government is undermining China’s growth. It is hard to divine the motivation behind this pullback as the consequences seem plainly predictable. My guess is that the leadership has found that the burgeoning free market was prompting more social and political change than it found comfortable. As I discussed in another post, civil disorder is one of the great fears engrained in the Chinese psyche. China will continue to struggle with trying to find the right balance between allowing the market to drive productivity and the pace of social/political change, which will be a drag on its economy.

D.C. police confirmed an abortionist who appears to have illegally performed partial-birth abortions will be allowed to continue with no criminal investigation, the same week peaceful pro-lifers who staged a protest at his abortion facility were found guilty in federal court and face imprisonment.
According to the Daily Signal, the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department stated Thursday they are not actively investigating abortionist Cesare Santangelo, whom pro-life activists have accused of performing gruesome abortions of viable babies. The Federalist also asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation if it was investigating Santangelo, but the agency refused to answer the question. The accusations stem from pro-life activists Lauren Handy and Terrisa Bukovinac, who obtained a box of five preemie-sized babies outside Santangelo’s practice, the Washington Surgi-Clinic, in March 2022. The babies became known to pro-lifers as “The Five.” Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a Washington D.C. federal court found five pro-life activists, including Handy, guilty of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for their participation in an October 2020 rescue and protest at the Washington Surgi-Clinic. The pro-lifers face up to 11 years in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and fines of up to $350,000.

It causes TB, Cancer, lung deterioration – and death. The drug is for psoriasis, crohns and colitis. None of these diseases cause death. And doctors have no idea what causes these diseases other than a compromised immune system. The number of patients taking this drug between 2009 and 2019 was 300,000. […] Lowering Medicare’s drug costs on drugs that the vast majority of Americans do NOT take won’t impact Medicare. It is a Ponzi scheme. We already have hundreds of drugs that are duplicated. We have Generics on the assembly line! Medicare typically will recommend generic drugs instead of the pricier patented ones. The negotiations will take years and not become enforceable until 2026.

What stood out was a video of a tearful woman complaining at great length about the horror of being misgendered at a gay bar. It was quite funny, of course, but it was also illuminating. First, it suggested that homosexuals have had it with transgenders. Second, it spoke to the incredible importance of a world with visible boundaries in terms of behavior and identity. Trump didn’t win. Are you despairing? NP: Well, I have to resist being in despair—it’s my natural default position anyway—but I still feel pretty much the way I felt to begin with. The fact of the matter is, the idea of his being an unworthy vessel for doing God’s work—though of course not meant literally—I think makes sense. And my prime example always was King David, who did many bad things, which, according to the Bible, is why God did not allow him to build the Temple. I used to use this analogy so often that my son John, who was a mild Never Trumper, at some point said, “Stop with the King David already!” But there is now a complication. Trump has done a few things that go beyond the vices that the imperfect vessel is allowed, even while doing God’s work. For example, in 2020 he lost Georgia for the Republicans, which cost them the Senate. CRB: But you consider that political malpractice? Losing Georgia? NP: . . . Mackinnon: Stray dog repeatedly escaped from shelter to hang out in a nursing home. Now, he gets to call it his own: ‘If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.’
A nameless stranger with a mysterious past found himself incarcerated in a facility in Bellaire, Michigan. While clearly homeless, he nevertheless evidenced a strong sense of belonging. However, he apparently did not feel that he belonged at the Antrim County Animal Control shelter. The dog, later named Scout — a 65-pound mutt at least 10 years of age about whom little was known except for signs of past abuse and evidence of having been shot in the face — managed to break free of the shelter on multiple occasions, clearing both the shelter’s 10-foot chain link fence and a 6-foot privacy fence, then crossing a highway, reported the Detroit Free Press. […] The first time he got out, Scout made his way inside the nursing home and slept in the lobby on a leather loveseat. A nurse found Scout the next morning then called animal control, who acknowledged he had gone missing the night before. Scout made another great escape just a few nights later. Again, he found his groove on the leather loveseat, and again he slept until caught. […] “I’m a person who looks at outward signs, and if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be,” Marna Robertson, the facility’s administrator, told the Free Press. “He did that one time, two times, three times, and obviously that’s something you should pay attention to. And I asked the staff, ‘Well, he wants to be here. Would anybody like to have a dog?'” The staff evidently answered in the affirmative — to the delight of the residents.

After her, it’s been a steady decline, starting with Hillary Clinton and her infamous pantsuits, which have now morphed into straw hats and muumuus. We’re not sure which is worse, honestly. Then Michelle Obama had her own fashion missteps, setting a low bar that seemed unbeatable. But Jill Biden arrived and outdid them all with her uniquely frumpy style. The diplomatic notes have already been written, the process is just waiting to be started and it is probable that when, in mid-November, Giorgia Meloni he is expected to meet the Chinese president in Beijing Xi Jinping the Italian Parliament will have already approved a motion of implicit withdrawal. It would not be necessary, but to date this is the strategy chosen by the Italian Prime Minister to, in his logic, make the separation less traumatic and more impersonal.

In an appeals court Thursday, Helsinki’s top prosecutor said publicly quoting the Bible and publishing a booklet about Christian sexual ethics violates Finland’s “hate speech” law. The appeal escalates this U.S. ally’s prosecution of dissidents from leftist politics, a marker of repressive regimes.
The prosecutor has charged Member of Parliament Paivi Rasanen and Bishop Juhana Pohjola for writing and publishing, respectively, a booklet supporting natural marriage. “This [case] is a God-given wake up call for Christians and others worried about the direction our society is going,” Pohjola said in a post-court press conference Friday morning U.S. time. He noted convicting a religious leader for publishing theological documents would in effect criminalize Christianity in Finland and encourage similar oppression worldwide.

A new poll revealed that young Canadians from ages 18 to 29 are most likely to vote Conservative amid increasing censorship and inflation under the Trudeau government. According to a survey by Nanos Research, 39.21 percent of voters ages 18-29 plan to vote Conservative over Liberal or New Democratic Party (NDP) in the upcoming election that could be called anytime between now and October 2025. “I would be very concerned if I were the Liberals,” said Nik Nanos, the polling company’s chief data scientist and founder. “Right now, the Conservatives are really doing well among male voters, they’re more competitive among female voters than they have been, and the Conservatives are now doing well among younger voters,” he added.
