Weerts: The Surprising True Story Of The Women Behind Mother’s Day

Any mother who has had to bury her child — one of the most devastating and enduring tragedies of motherhood — can take heart on Mother’s Day. You are not alone. The mother who was the very inspiration for the holiday, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, lost seven of her 11 children during the mid-1800s in rural Virginia. The dedication to honoring and supporting mothers displayed by Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis inspired her daughter Anna Jarvis, who never married or had children, to lobby for a holiday to honor “the best mother who ever lived — your mother.” After a few years of local celebrations, Mother’s Day became a national holiday on May 9, 1914, following the proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson, who declared the second Sunday of May “a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”  Ann Marie Reeves was born on Sep. 30, 1832, in Culpepper, Virginia to a Methodist preacher and his wife. At the age of 17, she married Granville E. Jarvis, son of a Baptist minister, and the couple moved to Taylor County (now West Virginia) where Granville began his career as a merchant. Seven children born to the young couple did not live past the age of six,  . . .[…]  But her initial proclamation for the celebration struck a chord that has endured for 117 years. In one of the earliest celebrations, Anna Jarvis explained the meaning of the holiday quite poignantly: This day is intended that we may make new resolutions for a more active thought to our dear mothers. By words, gifts, acts of affection, and in every way possible, give her pleasure, and make her heart glad every day, and constantly keep in memory Mothers Day; when you made this resolution, lest you forget and neglect your dear mother, if absent from home write her often, tell her of a few of her noble good qualities and how you love her. God bless our faithful good mothers.

Griswold: 15 Enduring Mother’s Day Gifts That Won’t Die In A Vase

Even though my mother frequently reminds me Mother’s Day is mostly for people who don’t honor their moms the rest of the year, this holiday is still a great excuse to celebrate the special ladies in our lives. Furthermore, in a cultural moment that prompts us to opt out of Mother’s Day emails and reduces matriarchs to “birthing persons,” we should take every opportunity to reach out to let mothers know we care about and esteem them. Whether that’s your own mother or mother-in-law, your dear girlfriend who has miscarried or is fighting an infertility battle, your grandmother or surrogate grandmom, or another mom who is near and dear to you, there’s a Mother’s Day gift out there for every budget. Most women would never turn down a fresh-cut bouquet — especially this time of year! — but here are some other items that will outlive anything that comes in a vase. Hand-Written Letter In our 21st-century digital whirlwind of Facebook Messenger, e-invites, and Facetime, snail mail is a rarity. In many cases, even thoughtful thank-you notes are a tragic relic of the past. But if you’re thankful for your mom, it might be time for an archeological dig of your stationery. A handwritten letter costs you nothing but a few introspective moments — but to your mother, it would be priceless.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) Tweet:  What have Democrats done to secure the border? They: • Skipped hearings at the border • Slandered hardworking border agents as “racists” • Ignored when terrorists crossed in record numbers

James Woods, actor, Tweet: If seven million potential Republican voters were strolling across our southern border, there would be tanks parked on the Rio Grande and helicopter gunships in the air.

Christopher Roach contributor to American Greatness: Every time you hear about an immigrant committing a crime or being victimized by one, it was a completely unnecessary occurrence, a burden on real Americans, and a direct and expensive consequence of our uncontrolled border.

Bob Weir contributor to American Thinker: As we sit comfortably in our homes, having dinner with our families, crime rates are going up all around us.  That is to say that criminals are no longer relegated to the inner cities; they’ve evolved to suburbs and rural areas as they seek new and more vulnerable targets.  The Biden administration is fostering the decline of those outer areas by using the Housing and Urban Development agency to force suburbs to accept high-density “affordable housing.”

(First bugs. Is this next?) Jackson: What does human meat taste like? Scientists reveal the unique flavour of our FLESH – as an influencer admits to eating part of her own knee in a spaghetti bolognese

And, in 2014, BBC science journalist Greg Foot had a piece of muscle taken from his calf in order to investigate what it would taste like. While he did not eat it, the biopsy was processed in the lab to get an idea of its texture, before it was cooked up and the resulting aromas were analysed. He found that the muscle contains similar fibers to those found in both chicken breast and some cuts of beef.  Of the smell of the cooked flesh, Foot says: ‘That actually smells quite nice. It’s really meaty… a lot richer than pork or chicken.’  He added that it seemed ‘similar to beef and ale stew’. In the UK and USA, there are no specific laws against cannibalism. However, the acts which would see a person get to place where they are able to eat someone, are. These include murder, which Meiwes was convicted of, the theft of human tissue and preventing a lawful burial. Despite this, and conflicting accounts of its flavour, some experts say that cannibalism could be a solution to climate change. In 2019, Swedish scientist Professor Magnus Soderlund suggested . . .

Christopher Monckton of Brenchley: 3 Damning Equations to Defeat Global Warming Zealots

The true economic, social, and political cost of the measures proposed by governments (in the West only) to destroy their nations’ businesses and jobs and to impoverish every household is becoming ever more visible.  At last, therefore, a few brave souls in the scientific and academic communities are beginning to question what I shall call — with more than a little justification — the Communist Party line on climate change. Three devastating equations have emerged, each of which calls fundamentally into question the imagined (and imaginary) basis for the economic hara-kiri by which the West is throwing away its gentle and beneficent global hegemony.  Power and wealth are passing inexorably from the democracies of the West to the communist-led tyrannies of the East. However, the three equations stand firmly in the way.  It is these three equations — simple enough to be explained here for the general reader, yet devastating enough utterly to destroy the official climate change narrative — that will soon lay low the enemies of prosperity, democracy, and liberty who have, until now, gotten away with undermining the West, no less from within than from without, by their childishly apocalyptic climate change narrative.

The first of these equations . . .

(2A win) Rizzo: 18- to 20-year-olds can’t be barred from buying handguns, judge rules

A federal judge in Virginia on Wednesday declared unconstitutional a set of federal laws and regulations that prohibit federally-licensed firearms dealers from selling handguns to people who are 18 to 20 years of age, finding that the measures violated the Second Amendment. “Because the statutes and regulations in question are not consistent with our Nation’s history and tradition, they, therefore, cannot stand,” U.S. District Judge Robert E. Payne, who sits in Richmond, concluded in a 71-page opinion. Attorneys on both sides of the case said they expected the Justice Department to appeal the decision and request a stay, which would prevent Payne’s ruling from taking immediate effect while higher courts weigh the case.

The Right Scoop: New report suggests an alliance between Trump and Ramaswamy could be coming…

A new report out this afternoon suggests that an alliance between Trump and Ramaswamy may be coming. According to Politico, Corey Lewandowski spoke with Ramaswamy’s super PAC about joining and Trump did not object: . . .[…]  Lewandowski’s presence at American Exceptionalism PAC could have the effect of bolstering Trump. With Lewandowski involved, top Republicans believe it would be inconceivable that the super PAC would target the former president, and would most likely focus its fire elsewhere. […] It sounds like Team Trump is continuing to anticipate Governor DeSantis’ entry into the presidential race. Otherwise I see no real reason to do this.

Creitz: John Brennan’s closed-door hearing ‘confirmed’ Hunter laptop letter was ‘all political’: Jim Jordan

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told Fox News the testimony his panel heard in private from Obama-era CIA Director John Brennan “confirmed” the letter signed by 51 current and former intel officials was not on-the-level. “[Brennan] sat for a four-hour interview and he further confirmed that this thing was all political,” Jordan said on “Jesse Watters Primetime.” Jordan recounted his allegation that then-Biden campaign adviser Antony Blinken was the “impetus” behind the letter, which he said was organized in-part by former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell, who testified before the Judiciary Committee earlier in May.

Mahoney: SOS Mac Warner on Elections: Fix Laws and Punish Bad Actors

When West Virginia’s Secretary of State, Mac Warner, testified before members of the U.S. House on April 27, he provided one of the most pragmatic and cogent testimonies to date on the 2020 election. Warner’s Post-Hearing testimony examines the widespread, seemingly opportunistic malfeasance at the state level in the 2020 election. His testimony brings substance to the discussion about the 2020 election. He identifies the exploitable gaps in election administration and provides solutions. Moreover, he told UncoverDC on Tuesday that it’s time for citizens, secretaries of state, governors, and lawmakers to work together in earnest to address the laws that invite criminality and opportunistic malfeasance. As a constitutional lawyer and Secretary of State, his education and on-the-job experience make him well-equipped to restore confidence in elections. He is actively building relationships with other secretaries of state to help them address election integrity in their states.

Greenfield: Greenfield: Secret Emails Reveal Biden Admin Faked China Spy Balloon Outrage

Remember that time China invaded our territory with surveillance programs? Old news. Biden national security adviser Jake Sullivan met with top Chinese official Wang Yi in Vienna this week to move beyond the Chinese spy balloon incident and reestablish communication. The meetings between Sullivan and Yi, which took place Wednesday and Thursday, were the highest level of engagement with China since the surveillance balloon traversed the United States in February. “I think both sides recognize that unfortunate incident led to the bit of pause in engagement. We’re speaking now beyond that and reestablishing some standard channels of communications,” a senior administration official said about the meeting. When asked whether that means the incident is over for the Biden administration and there won’t be any consequences, the official said, “We’ve been clear where we stand in terms of the breach of sovereignty.”

All too clear.

Smith: Biden Can’t Ignore Constitution and Give Himself Unilateral Power to Raise Debt Ceiling

Before the Treasury can issue any debt, though, Congress first must authorize an expenditure and appropriate money for it. This is because the Constitution places the power of the purse with Congress. In other words, Congress—not the president and not the courts—decides both what money will be spent on and how much will be spent. If the government’s receipts from things such as tax revenues exceed those authorized and appropriated expenditures, that’s the end of the story. But they rarely do, so it rarely is. The government needs a way to make up this deficit. As a result, Congress traditionally accompanied those first two steps with a third—a specific debt-issuance authorization. But in 1917, Congress moved away from authorizing each specific debt issuance and instead authorized the Treasury to issue debt up to a certain ceiling. Still, it retained many sublimits on the amount and types of debt the Treasury could issue. It removed those sublimits in 1939, so many mark that event as the establishment of the modern debt limit, where Congress “set an aggregate limit … on federal debt, while allowing Treasury officials to decide how to manage that debt.” To be clear, the debt limit does not impact the ability of the federal government to spend authorized and appropriated money—if it has the money in hand to spend. The debt limit only precludes the Treasury from borrowing more money to fund those authorized and appropriated expenditures. In short, it helps Congress maintain its constitutional role as the holder of the purse strings and helps focus its attention on the total national debt that has resulted from year after year of deficit spending. […]So, Biden’s team has called in the lawyers, and they could be getting creative. Of course, some of these “creative” legal arguments aren’t anything new and are just silly. For example, some have suggested that a law authorizing the Treasury to mint platinum coins of any denomination could allow the Treasury to mint a trillion-dollar platinum coin (or maybe two!) and deposit it into the Federal Reserve in exchange for cash. […]   More perniciously, some have argued that the Constitution itself prohibits the debt ceiling. Those arguments come in different flavors, but most are based on Section 4 of the 14th Amendment, which says: . . .

Weir: Ready for leftists to wreck your neighborhood?

For several decades, one of the major dreams of the middle class has been to own a home in the suburbs.  Now, under the guise of prohibiting discrimination based on race, religion, sex, etc., Democrats have proposed regulations that would force jurisdictions that accept HUD funding to “promote equity in their communities, decrease segregation, and increase access to opportunity and community assets for people of color and other underserved communities.” In other words, the left is saying that the route to upward mobility for disadvantaged minorities is dependent on their relocation to more affluent areas, where they will have access to more services.  One wonders what services they’ll receive in a small town that they can’t get in a big city.  By the way, could someone please tell me which communities in this country are segregated by race or any other factor?  Furthermore, given how the left describes “equity,” we can be sure it means that every resident will demand to have the same level of affluence as his neighbors, whether he can afford it or not.

Munro: Mayorkas: Americans’ Priorities Are Subordinate to ‘Nation of Immigrants’

President Joe Biden’s border chief Alejandro Mayorkas was asked Wednesday if his huge and growing inflow of economic migrants is good for Americans’ wages and rents, and he replied that this is a “Nation of Immigrants.” The Cuban-born, pro-migration border chief took a few procedural questions from picked journalists when he presented part of his new plans to import more migrants into Americans’ workplaces and neighborhoods. “Our president has led the largest expansion of legal pathways ever,” Mayorkas said to a mostly empty press room. But Breitbart News asked about the fairness of Mayorkas’s maximum-migration policies for ordinary Americans at a time of sliding wages, rising rents, and expanding civic chaos: . . .

Wauck: Briefly Noted: Whither Twitter?

Just as it kinda looked like Twitter would be a bastion of freedom, ya gotta wonder about this: . . . […]  BREAKING: Twitter’s new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, is currently the Executive Chair for the World Economic Forum, and was Chairman of Advertising at NBC Universal. […]  I mean, that seems disqualifying for a credible alternative media outlet, if that’s what Musk claims he’s up to. OTOH, Axios claims she’ll mostly be involved with wooing advertisers back, freeing Musk up from that chore. Note that she’s been in advertising her whole career, including with the WEF.

Sundance: Elon Musk Hires Ultra Woke Linda Yaccarino as CEO of Twitter – Former Head of NBCUniversal Advertising – WEF Board Member – Pioneer of DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) Wokeism

Elon Musk has reportedly hired Linda Yaccarino as the CEO of Twitter.  Unfortunately, this decision is the exact opposite of what everyone hoped about Musk’s intentions with the platform. […]  Why would Elon Musk bring the most woke NBC advertising executive to become the CEO of Twitter?  Obviously, he is focused on generating revenue, and Yaccarino can bring woke credentials to the platform luring corporate advertisers.  Unfortunately, in order to achieve that objective, the platform content will have to be modified. That means the public square of Twitter needs to become a platform of non-controversial NPCs (Non Player Characters) which generally are identified in memes [SEE HERE].  The content on Twitter must fit an approved standard for advertising. Leading this effort to control platform content through the control of the monetization, is literally what Yaccarino has done in her work at NBCUniversal.  Thus, her efforts to promote DEI take on a new level of importance.

O’Neil: Lefty Media Ignore Conservative Group’s Massive Victory Against SPLC, Despite NYT Reporter Calling It ‘Front-Page News’

More than a month after a judge handed a conservative organization a monumental legal victory against the Southern Poverty Law Center, most legacy media outlets have ignored the story, even though a New York Times reporter said it was “front-page news.” The Southern Poverty Law Center routinely brands mainstream conservative and Christian organizations “hate groups,” placing them on a map with chapters of the Ku Klux Klan, but most lawsuits aiming to hold the SPLC accountable for this alleged defamation have failed. Judges often dismiss defamation lawsuits against the SPLC, saying the defamed “hate groups” fail to meet the “actual malice” standard. […]  This legal move represents the greatest hit to the SPLC’s credibility since 2019, when a former employee came forward in the wake of a racial discrimination and sexual harassment scandal that led the SPLC to fire its co-founder and see its president resign. Amid that scandal, former employee Bob Moser confessed that the SPLC’s “hate” accusations are a “highly profitable scam” meant to exaggerate hate and bilk donors.

Bauerlein: College Curricula Should Cultivate Core Values, Not Shallow Diversity

ast week, interim President Richard Corcoran of New College of Florida, where I am a trustee, released an executive summary of a new core curriculum at the school. It’s a proposal in an early stage, but the first principle of a solid core is stated explicitly numerous times. The summary doesn’t lay out particular courses that will make up the New College core, as reform began only a few months ago. But “Whatever the choices made,” Corcoran writes, “the program should be uniform.” Every student will pass through it, and everyone will read a set list of works (Plato, The Federalist Papers, and Tao Te Ching are mentioned). The sequence may run to a dozen courses divided into the two categories of “Techné” (science, technology, engineering, and math) and “Virtue” (humanities), not just the one or two Great Books courses that many schools including Harvard allow a few interested kids to choose. This “central, common, intellectual experience” will “create a community,” Corcoran predicts, and not just within each respective cohort that passes through. Alterations from year to year will be rare. Progressivist educators insist that as the world changes the curriculum must change. They love innovation and the cutting edge. That desire won’t fly in Sarasota. “The Virtue curriculum will be stable over time. Alumni children would read the same books which their parents read 25 years ago. The curriculum binds the NCF family across the generations,” Corcoran writes.

Farrell: California Reparations Task Force demands racial discrimination is LEGALIZED: Panel wants state constitution to be amended so they can discriminate against other races and hand up to $1.2m to black residents

The California Reparations Task Force has demanded the state legalize racial discrimination in favor of black people. Final recommendations from the panel, established by Gavin Newsom in 2020, were accepted last weekend and will be forwarded to the California Legislature before heading to the governor’s desk to be signed into law. Earlier this week, Newsom refused to back the committee’s recommended $1.2 million to be given to those who meet the criteria. He said on Tuesday he felt there were better ways of addressing systemic inequality than cash handouts. The entire package would cost around $800 billion.

Buried deep in the committee’s report are a series of quiet recommendations, including the proposed repeal of Proposition 209.

Sundance: South Shore Chicago Residents Blast City Council During Public Hearing Over Housing Illegal Alien Migrants

The national media hide these types of local stories because they destroy the preferred narrative.  However, the open border leftist policies are opposed by every cross-cultural faction of ordinary Americans, including the predominantly black community of South Shore Chicago.  Keep in mind the DNC convention for 2024 will be held in Chicago. Watch the response from local residents as the City Council attempts to hold a meeting to inform the public of their decision to place 250 to 500 illegal aliens in housing at South Shore High School.  There are hundreds of illegal aliens currently camped out in police stations around the community and the residents of the area are sick of it. Marino, McCarthy, Celona & Propper: Daniel Penny to surrender and face second-degree manslaughter charge in Jordan Neely chokehold

“We can confirm that Daniel Penny will be arrested on a charge of Manslaughter in the Second Degree,” a spokesman for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement. “We cannot provide any additional information until he has been arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court, which we expect to take place tomorrow.” The DA’s office had faced pressure to bring charges as its investigation into the May 1 encounter progressed. […]  Cops had taken Penny into custody for questioning in the aftermath of Neely’s death, and he was then released without charges — sparking outrage from protesters, some lawmakers and Neely’s family, who called for the Queens man’s arrest. […]  It had been widely expected that Bragg would present the case to a grand jury for an indictment, rather than file a felony complaint, in order to sidestep a potential political minefield.

A homeless man has been charged with several hate crimes for defecating on an LGBTQ+ Pride flag and wiping his behind with another at a Manhattan restaurant, according to the NYPD. Fred Innocent, 45, walked into Buceo 95, a tapas bar on W. 95th St. and Broadway on the Upper West Side, on April 15 at about 10 a.m. as the day crew was setting up and grabbed two rainbow flags off of a table, cops said. He relieved himself on one of the banners, according to police, then cleaned himself with another. “This was a total hate crime,” restaurant owner Courtney Barroll said  […] “I want to thank the NYPD detectives for catching him,” she said. “They worked so hard on this.”

Crilly: EXCLUSIVE – Cartels are making too much MONEY smuggling migrants to allow a surge after Title 42: Former border patrol chief says Mexican gangs will control crossings because chaos is bad for business

Instead of a tidal wave of immigrants flooding the border, Chris Clem said cartels will control numbers to ensure they can keep the profits flowing in for weeks to come. Title 42 is due to expire at midnight on Thursday, relaxing public health restrictions designed to stop COVID-19 entering the country with migrants. A surge in migrants crossing the border is already being reported in Yuma, Arizona, where Clem retired last year as the sector’s Chief Border Patrol Agent. ‘People that are really orchestrating this do not want to make it any more painful,’ he told DailyMail.com.
