Robert Zubrin writes in Merchants of Despair that “the founding prophet of modern antihumanism,” is Thomas Malthus and his 1798 An Essay on the Principle of Population. Malthus claimed that any population always grows geometrically larger than its food supply, a hypothesis which ignored the creative ingenuity of people. Worse were the consequences of his theories when applied to the real world.
For example, falsely believing that Ireland was overpopulated, the British government allowed this food-exporting island to spiral downward into famine partly because, as Malthus himself said, many agreed that “a great part of the population should be swept from the soil.” Over a million Irish died of starvation and diseases caused by malnutrition. Thirty years later, the same policy of neglect in . . . […] Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection put the problem of overpopulation into a context even more ripe with antihuman barbarism and suffering. The malign effects of overpopulation were now the consequences of natural selection exterminating the “unfit” and clearing space for the better fit to survive and flourish. And this grim process, as Social Darwinism claimed, included human beings not just in their physical being, but also in their inferior cultures and racial characteristics. Thus the inhuman, brutal logic of eugenics and “scientific racism.”

We are witnessing a bureaucratically imposed restructuring of capitalism to comply with an ideologically driven Net Zero Emissions (NZE) policy. The restructuring aims to impose neo-Marxist “public good” restraints on private corporations through White House-issued executive orders and federal agency rulemaking, not congressional legislation. Suppose the SEC is successful in this effort. In that case, the U.S. will join the European Union (EU) in hamstringing U.S.-based corporations with profit-inhibiting accounting requirements certain to constrain profitability—all in pursuit of a demonization of CO2 that fact-based climate science fails to support. Let us suppose you draw water and sediment in small quantities from a stream bed. After removing some solid material, you let the remainder flow back into the stream without adding anything. Are you polluting the stream? Common sense dictates one answer. But an overzealous Idaho green group and a federal court do not see it that way. So Shannon Poe, a suction dredge miner, ended up paying a $150,000 fine after a citizen suit was brought against him in 2018 by the Idaho Conservation League (ICL). Technically, the fine, imposed by Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond E. Patricco in September 2022, was for not obtaining permits for suction mining (NPDES permit IDG370000). Which means the activity isn’t banned outright as polluting. But before that, Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald E. Bush (see page 11 of his judgement) had determined that “the very nature of Mr. Poe’s suction dredge mining added pollutants to the South Fork Clearwater River.” […] The crux of the issue is . . . […] Poe’s position that suction dredge mining does not pollute waterways is supported by the Supreme Court decisions in Los Angeles County Flood Control District v. Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Inc (2013) and South Florida Water Management District v. Miccosukee Tribe (2004).

Politico published a story Tuesday including the claim that Justice Neil Gorsuch made an error by not disclosing who purchased a property he partially owned; however, the story quickly attracted criticism after legal experts and commentators argued that Politico misrepresented key elements of Gorsuch’s financial disclosures. […] Stephen Gillers, New York University professor, told The New York Times that Gorsuch was under no legal obligation to report the buyer of the property. […] “This is just another garbage hit job,” Garrett Ventry, former Senate Judiciary Committee aide, told the DCNF. “Justice Gorsuch disclosed the amount of sale on his 2017 Financial Disclosure, never met or had any relationship with the purchaser (who even confirmed that for Politico), and the purchaser is a Democrat donor who has maxed out to Clinton and Gillibrand,” he added, referencing Duffy’s donations.

Hubbard: Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts declines to testify before Senate on ethics
Durbin, an Illinois Democrat, made the announcement after Roberts declined Tuesday to testify, in a letter that in part read: “Testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee by the Chief Justice of the United States is exceedingly rare, as one might expect in light of separation of powers concerns and the importance of preserving judicial independence,” Roberts listed the rare times that a sitting chief justice has testified before Congress on what he called “mundane topics,” and he noted that no president has ever testified before the Senate committee. He also attached a “Statement of Ethics Principles and Practices” that he said all members of the Supreme Court adhere to. The Judiciary panel still plans on proceeding with the May 2 hearing, according to Durbin.

During the episode, host Tim O’Brien asked his son Cooper for his thoughts on financial conflicts of interest, to which the boy replied that they should not be allowed to happen. Bloomberg tweeted about it, and were promptly roasted by Twitter users. “What do you think a financial conflict of interest is?” O’Brien asked his son. “What do you think a financial conflict of interest is?” O’Brien asked his son.
“When two people both share a bank account and [one person] wants to spend money on something but the other person doesn’t,” Cooper guessed. “That’s a good thought,” said O’Brien. “What if I told you it describes when powerful people, like people who sit on the Supreme Court, have money or other things they own and that might affect how they rule on things?”

The Biden administration is applauding the Taliban’s reported killing of the Islamic State militant behind the 2021 Kabul airport suicide bombing that killed 13 U.S. service members as a win for American security and a vindication of President Biden’s Afghanistan withdrawal — even as the administration declined to evacuate American civilians caught in the deadly Sudanese civil war. The Aug. 26, 2021 bombing at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul killed 11 U.S. Marines, one Navy sailor, and one Army trooper. A further 18 service members sustained injuries, and more than 150 civilians died in the attack, which occurred amid the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Taliban reconquest of the country.

The seeds of Sudan’s civil war started with a coup on October 25, 2021. However, the timing of a February 23, 2022 visit to Moscow from the deputy head of Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council, Rapid Support Forces (RSF) General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), shows there is much more at play than a localized coup. Hemedti’s eight-day visit with Putin just happened to coincide with U.S. sanctions against Russia for Putin’s “threatening actions” and “unprovoked aggression” in Ukraine, according to a press release from the White House. The U.S. and other countries placed a first round of sanctions on Russia a day after Hemedti’s visit on February 24, 2022. […] Civil wars and coups that erupt in countries like Sudan are rarely superficial or entirely locally-driven events. There are almost always geopolitical interests inserting themselves into internal conflicts because of strategic routes and valuable local resources. Sudan and other impoverished countries may be exploited by world powers because they do not have the means to build infrastructure, grow food or provide medical aid for their own people. In many cases, while mutually beneficial arrangements are brokered, advancing infrastructure and important resources, those arrangements can also usher in conflict and the death of innocents, as we are now watching unfold in Sudan. Biden Admin Taps Ford’s Top Electric Vehicle Lobbyist as Energy Department Adviser
Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm has a new adviser: Ford’s top electric vehicle lobbyist, who has defended the auto giant’s use of taxpayer funds to build batteries with Chinese technology. Granholm earlier this month tapped Ford lobbyist Christopher Smith to serve on her Secretary of Energy Advisory Board, which guides Granholm on how best to achieve a “global clean energy revolution.” As Ford’s chief government affairs officer—a role Smith will keep while serving on the board—Smith has lobbied an array of federal entities on green policies. Ford’s most recent disclosure, for example, shows that Smith lobbied the Energy Department on electric vehicles and greenhouse gas emission regulations just days before Granholm announced his status as an advisory board member. Smith’s inclusion on the board comes as Ford attempts to fend off congressional scrutiny of its partnership with a Chinese battery maker.

Americans can’t afford to buy food, so Biden decided that they also shouldn’t be able to heat their homes during the winter. After an “environmental” measure that would prevent a majority of the country from being able to afford new cars, Biden is now going after their power bills.
The latest EPA proposal would mandate ‘carbon capture’ at power plants. A study by MIT showed that carbon capture raises the cost of electricity from 30% to 50% depending on the type of plant. Another study by Australia’s Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis however showed that prices could actually climb as high as 95% to 175%. Imagine your power bills doubling? That will be the final blow for millions of Americans.

Reves: Kelsey Meta Boren, who mentored drag queen, 11, sentenced to less than a year for child sex crimes
A former Oregon elementary school teacher and mentor of an 11-year-old drag queen was sentenced to 11 months in jail after being convicted of nearly a dozen felony child abuse crimes. Kelsey Meta Boren, 31, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of encouraging child sexual abuse in the first degree last month after she was busted for uploading child porn online, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said. Boren, who worked for the Fern Ridge School District before the allegations surfaced last year, was also pictured in an Instagram post prior to her arrest with an 11-year-old drag queen, who she claims to have mentored as a “drag mom.”

ACLU goes after small Massachusetts town for canceling Pride event, drag show
- North Brookfield, Massachusetts’ select board pulled permission for a “Small Town Pride Day” event after finding a drag show at the event violated local restrictions on adult entertainment.
- North Brookfield policy bans adult entertainment, except by special permit in industrial zones. The American Civil Liberties Union labels the ordinance discriminatory, and is threatening litigation.

Pullmann: Mary Harrington’s ‘Feminism Against Progress’ Opens An Escape Hatch For The Sexual Revolution’s Prey
It’s not surprising marriage and a child catalyzed Mary Harrington into a rich observer of the human condition. Her experience shows it’s dangerous to encourage delayed family formation because that connects people to reality. Slowly accepting her body’s uniquely female capacities and consequently undergoing a philosophical makeover formed Harrington into a hopeful representative of escaping the sexual revolution’s house of horrors. Her inaugural book, “Feminism Against Progress,” seeks to reduce the kind of casualties she almost became. “Like many kinds of revolution,” she says, “losing my faith happened slowly, then all at once.” It’s a gentle effort that will speak to the millions brutalized by the social Marxist war against both sexes. She’s so persuasive, her book release has been the target of the usual cancellation attempts. Yet Harrington’s new anthropology also appears incomplete. She’s a feminist mugged by reality, but not reality-checked enough to stop supporting feminism, at least in name. That’s important because names ought to describe reality. They can be more or less accurate, and inaccuracy creates grave problems. Will Harrington halt her reorientation toward reality before she’s reached it in full? This book, at least, records her at such a pause. Thankfully for readers, this journey is worth joining her on.

AP: FDA approves drug treating rare form of Lou Gehrig’s disease
Food and Drug Administration regulators on Tuesday approved a first-of-a-kind drug for a rare form of Lou Gehrig’s disease, though they are requiring further research to confirm it truly helps patients. The FDA approved Biogen’s injectable drug for patients with a rare genetic mutation that’s estimated to affect less than 500 people in the U.S. It’s the first drug for an inherited form of ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a deadly disease that destroys nerve cells needed for basic functions like walking, talking and swallowing. Approval came via FDA’s accelerated pathway, which allows drugs to launch based on promising early results, before they’re confirmed to benefit patients. That shortcut has come under increasing scrutiny from government watchdogs and congressional investigators. The FDA is requiring Biogen to continue studying the drug in a trial of people who carry the genetic mutation but do not yet have ALS symptoms.

Compare industrial tycoon Henry Ford to the Ford Foundation, which rejects “the model of capitalism we have today.” But it is uniquely odd that Charles Koch’s enterprises have moved so far left while the donor remains alive. Billions of dollars are at stake. Many current and former donor partners, grantees, and staff agree: “Old Koch” was about economic freedom and the core values that sustain a free society, but “New Koch” downplays or hides those values in order to appeal to the contemporary Left. Old Koch focused on getting government out of the way so that civil society could flourish. New Koch has largely skipped that step and moved on to “social entrepreneurship.” Those outside the ideological network in which Koch is a major player (known as the “liberty movement”) should understand a few things. First, “Koch” means not just the Charles Koch Foundation (CKF) but the large family of organizations and projects that are run by or strongly influenced by Stand Together, the umbrella Koch organization. These include core programs such as the Koch Associate Program (KAP), organizations launched by Koch with varying degrees of independence like Americans for Prosperity (AFP), and well-funded Koch-adjacent organizations like the Institute for Humane Studies. Koch Industries’ annual revenue easily tops $100 billion. In what follows, I show Koch’s leftward shift in rhetoric, ideology, politics, and philanthropy. The changes are dramatic and arresting.
