Birzer: The Brilliant Darkness of a Friday Afternoon
As Jesus looked down from the cross, so close to three o’clock on a Friday afternoon, he saw his “mother, with her sister, Mary wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.” Next to the three Marys stood “the disciple whom he loved,” St. John. For nearly four decades, this scene has haunted me. As Catholics, we focus so much on Jesus’s physical suffering on the cross, the pain his mother must have felt, and the forthcoming death and resurrection that we often readily and understandably skip a person who is vital—actually, fundamentally and profoundly critical—to the entire story: St. John. Tradition tells us that John was the youngest, that he was the last to write his Gospel, and that he was the only apostle not to have been brutally martyred. At the moment that Jesus looked down from the Cross, He gave His mother to John, asking him and his house to shelter her. “’There is your mother’; and from that moment the disciple took her into his home.” While I have often wondered what St. John must have felt—the pain and the anguish—at seeing his savior crucified, I have wondered far more often what Jesus must have felt, especially given that He was fully man as well as fully God. No doubt, it meant a great deal to Him to have the four by his side in His greatest moment of agony. All to the good. But, as a man, what must He have thought knowing . . .

While Christmas—the birth date of the Messiah, Jesus Christ—marks the watershed of splitting calendar history into two epochs, B.C. and A.D., Easter marks the day and commemorates actual events, however miraculous, that followed the crucifixion and death of Christ that transformed the world forever.
But how and why would that torturous event and extreme sorrow associated with the death of the messiah affect eternity in a positive way? Why should Easter be a joyful time? The answer is neither elusive nor complicated. There are many religions of the world going back thousands of years. But only one of them, Christianity, has a founder who professed to be the Messiah—the son of God—who provided irrefutable proof of who he was by conquering death through resurrection. Easter is the celebration of Christ’s resurrection. Christ is absolutely unique in being the only person in history who was pre-announced starting a thousand years before he was born, with over 100 prophetic accounts from 18 different prophets from the Old Testament between the tenth and the fourth centuries BC—predicting the specifics of his coming birth, life, and death.

New York state officials determined that multiple high-income villages that boast million-dollar homes are “disadvantaged,” opening the door for the areas to enjoy increased energy development funding. In late March, the so-called Climate Justice Working Group (CJWG) — which consists of nine environmental justice advocates and four state government officials — released a list of disadvantaged communities as mandated under the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Under the 2019 law, historically disadvantaged areas defined by the CJWG are required to receive no less than 35% of clean energy program funding. […] . . . the working group included the villages of Tuckahoe and Shinnecock, two ritzy neighborhoods located in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York. The median home price in Tuckahoe, for example, is $4.2 million, according to the real estate firm Redfin. One home located in the village was sold for $4.4 million in December.

McCarthy hosted a bipartisan meeting with Tsai at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library out of Los Angeles with dozens of lawmakers, including the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party chair and ranking members Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL). During a joint press conference with Tsai, the House speaker said he believes U.S.-Taiwan relations are stronger than ever. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg published a report last October that had been prepared by his “TGNCNB Working Group.” “TGNCNB,” as the report explains, stands for “transgender, gender-nonconforming and nonbinary…people.” The report concluded that “gender-segregated bathrooms” were a problem that has to be dealt with. […] “I would like to thank the members of the TGNCNB Working Group who collaborated for months to analyze our Office’s practices and suggest strategies to improve how we serve trans and gender-diverse survivors, witnesses, and community members,” said Bragg.

A couple months after George Sydnor Jr. was arrested in October for armed robbery, Biden appointee Sean Staples, a D.C. superior court judge, took over his case and released him. Sydnor subsequently skipped his arraignment hearing and was issued a warrant for his arrest. Staples’s ruling came just two weeks after a different judge had denied Sydnor bail, citing his criminal history. Since 2000, Sydnor has been convicted of several felonies and misdemeanors including domestic violence, armed robbery, and rape, according to a Washington Free Beacon review of court records. Just four months after his release, Sydnor was arrested covered in blood at the scene of the slaying of Christy Bautista, 31, on April 1 and charged with first degree murder. Authorities say Sydnor broke in and stabbed Bautista at least 33 times with a kitchen knife. Biden nominated Staples in January 2021, and the Senate confirmed his appointment the following month. Thirty-eight Republicans voted against his confirmation.

Columbia University law students and alums are in an uproar over an Instagram post that showed students in the Federalist Society meeting with Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh at the Court. It would ordinarily be a singular experience for law students to spend time with one of the nine justices. That is not how it went over at Columbia where some are outraged by the meeting and Columbia’s posting the picture on its social media account. The Empowering Women of Color group announced it was “withdrawing our participation from Columbia Law School recruiting events.” Columbia’s own Center for Engaged Pedagogy, simply declared “WTF is wrong with you.” […] That would seem precisely the type of opportunity that a premier law school seeks to make available to its students. However, Kavanaugh remains persona non grata due to his conservative jurisprudence and allegations from his confirmation hearings. It does not matter that Kavanaugh (who was later the subject of an assassination attempt) was never charged with any crime and vehemently denies the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford.

The vaccine that was developed by Pfizer was found to be 82 percent effective in preventing severe cases of RSV in infants when it was given to pregnant mothers in the second half of their pregnancy. The final data published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday confirmed preliminary findings by the drug company last year. […] The study released Wednesday said that while the shot was successful in preventing severe cases of the illness, it did not reach its goal of more effectively preventing non-severe cases of the virus. It also said there were no safety concerns identified in the vaccine.

Kristi Johnston, national press secretary for NextGen America detailed how Hinge “has a setup where you’re given a certain amount of likes per day” and “also on the other end, other matches are also swiping right or left.” […] According to NPR, the online dating tactic is a better way of approaching young voters than sending campaign texts or cold calling, efforts which can be easily ignored. On dating apps, “it’s normal to talk to strangers and forge genuine connections.”
