Durden: RESTRICT Act Is Orwellian Censorship Grab Disguised As Anti-TikTok Legislation
The RESTRICT Act, introduced by Sens. Mark Warner (D-VA) and Tom Thune (R-SD), is aimed at blocking or disrupting transactions and financial holdings linked to foreign adversaries that pose a risk to national security, however the language of the bill could be used to give the US government enormous power to punish free speech. Warner, a longtime opponent of free speech who, as Michael Krieger pointed out in 2018 (and confirmed in the Twitter Files) pushed for the ‘weaponization’ of big tech, crafted the RESTRICT act to “ake swift action against technology companies suspected of cavorting with foreign governments and spies, to effectively vanish their products from shelves and app stores when the threat they pose gets too big to ignore,” according to Wired. Bad actors listed in the bill are; China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela. In reality, the RESTRICT Act has very little to do with TikTok and everything to do with controlling online content.

Would the RESTRICT Act—a.k.a. the TikTok ban bill—criminalize the use of VPNs? That’s the rumor floating around about the legislation, which was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Mark Warner (D–Va.) earlier this month. Warner’s office has said his bill wouldn‘t do this… but its broad language leaves room for doubt. And the act is still insanely far-reaching and could have a huge range of deleterious effects, even if it doesn’t criminalize people using a VPN to access TikTok. VPN stands for virtual private network, and there are several different kinds, but their general aim is the same: keeping your digital activities and location private. Using a VPN with your computer, phone, or another internet-enabled device can do things like mask your I.P. address and encrypt your internet connection. It’s a great way to get around location-based firewalls (a.k.a. geoblocking) and other forms of internet censorship. […] The language describing who the RESTRICT ACT applies to is confusing at best. The commerce secretary would be authorized to take steps to address risks posed by “any covered transaction by any person,” right? So what counts as a covered transaction? The bill states . . . The victory of the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB) in the recent provincial elections represents an extraordinary result for an anti-establishment party that was formed just over three years ago. But then again, these are not ordinary times. The BBB grew out of the mass demonstrations against the Dutch government’s proposal to cut nitrogen emissions by 50% in the country’s farming sector by 2030 — a target designed to comply with the European Union’s emission-reduction rules. While large farming companies have the means to meet these goals — by using less nitrogen fertiliser and reducing the number of their livestock — smaller, often family-owned farms would be forced to sell or shutter. Indeed, according to a heavily redacted European Commission document, this is precisely the strategy’s goal: “extensifying agriculture, notably through buying out or terminating farms, with the aim of reducing livestock”; this would “first be on a voluntary basis, but mandatory buyout is not excluded if necessary”. It is no surprise, then, that the plans sparked massive protests by farmers, who see it as a direct attack on their livelihoods, or that the BBB’s slogan — “No Farms, No Food” — clearly resonated with voters. (Feb. 2023) Gross: How ‘modern-day slavery’ in the Congo powers the rechargeable battery economy
Smartphones, computers and electric vehicles may be emblems of the modern world, but, says Siddharth Kara, their rechargeable batteries are frequently powered by cobalt mined by workers laboring in slave-like conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kara, a fellow at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health and at the Kennedy School, has been researching modern-day slavery, human trafficking and child labor for two decades. He says that although the DRC has more cobalt reserves than the rest of the planet combined, there’s no such thing as a “clean” supply chain of cobalt from the country. In his new book, Cobalt Red, Kara writes that much of the DRC’s cobalt is being extracted by so-called “artisanal” miners — freelance workers who do extremely dangerous labor for the equivalent of just a few dollars a day. “You have to imagine walking around some of these mining areas and dialing back our clock centuries,” Kara says. “People are working in subhuman, grinding, degrading conditions. They use pickaxes, shovels, stretches of rebar to hack and scrounge at the earth in trenches and pits and tunnels to gather cobalt and feed it up the formal supply chain.” […] On why these conditions are on par with slavery Imagine an entire population of people who cannot survive without scrounging in hazardous conditions for a dollar or two a day. There is no alternative there. The mines have . . .[…] On the trafficking of children to work in the mines There’s money to be made in every corner and every direction. And you’ve got these militias. he abortion drug Mifepristone (Mifeprex) entered the US market in 2000 after the FDA approved the drug. For the past two decades, the drug’s official labeling stated some permutation of the following: “Mifeprex…Administration must be under the supervision of a qualified physician” –and– “Mifeprex may be administered only in a clinic, medical office, or hospital, by or under the supervision of a physician, able to assess the gestational age of an embryo and to diagnose ectopic pregnancies.” Other prominent medical websites such as the Mayo Clinic state: “This medicine is given only by your doctor. You will not be allowed to take it at home. [It] requires three visits to your doctor.” Other websites including the Federal Government’s NIH’s National Library of Medicine website state the many safety issues regarding mifepristone along with “Mifepristone is only available in clinics, medical offices, and hospitals” and “You can only take mifepristone in your doctor’s office or clinic.” The FDA is now not just approving — but promoting — Big Pharma’s proposal to permit mailed, at home use of mifepristone for “do-it-yourself” abortion. No more doctor or staff present. No more ultrasounds to confirm gestational age or any in-house monitoring for complications for internal bleeding — for a drug well known to cause life-threatening bleeding.

he CDC found itself hoist with its own petard by making 25 basic statistical and numerical errors related to COVID-19, particularly with regard to children, while purporting to expose COVID vaccine misinformation, according to an analysis led by University of California San Francisco epidemiologists. The preprint, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, documented 20 errors that “exaggerated the severity of the COVID-19 situation” and three that “simultaneously exaggerated and downplayed” severity, while one each was neutral or exaggerated vaccine risks. […] “The errors are damning,” coauthor Vinay Prasad, a former National Institutes of Health fellow, said on Twitter. “Basic counts of dead kids, causes of childhood death. On the morning of Election Day last November, William French went to his local polling place in Freeland, Pennsylvania, to cast his vote. But the qualified and registered voter wasn’t allowed to. The disabled U.S. Army veteran was told that the precinct had run out of paper for ballots and he had to come back later in the afternoon. So that’s what he did, returning at 3:30 p.m. But the precinct still didn’t have ballots. Election workers told him to return yet again. But by nightfall, it was too difficult. French has endured 17 surgeries on his destroyed leg and uses a cane to walk. But the sidewalks are a mess, and he was worried about the risk of falling and further injury. That same morning, Melynda Reese and her husband went to their polling location in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania. But only Reese’s husband was allowed to vote, and for the same reason: The precinct had run out of paper. They came back at 4:00 p.m. and were told there would be a lengthy wait. […] French and Reese are just two of the thousands of voters affected by poor election administration in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The two just sued Luzerne County, its Board of Elections and Registration, and its Bureau of Elections in federal court for violations of their constitutional right to vote.

BPro’s TotalVote is an election software that is used across the country and in New Mexico, it had numerous issues. Its contract in Pennsylvania validates many of the concerns with the system. The Gateway Pundit reported on the numerous issues of BPro’s TotalVote in New Mexico. Tuesday, TGP reported that a group of election experts in Hawaii discovered that TotalVote has the ability to use “plug-ins” in the election process: In 2020, BPro was in negotiations with the state of Pennsylvania to develop a new election system in the state that would replace the current system. BPro’s system was centralized statewide and top-down. This is against the law in New Mexico where the counties tabulate votes and push their results up. BPro systems also shares in their PA contract that their system is fully integrated with ERIC.

Whedon: House approves amendment to protect gas stoves from Biden admin, two dozen Democrats support
The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved an amendment to a pivotal energy bill that would bar the Department of Energy from restricting gas stoves. In a 251-181 vote, more than two dozen Democrats crossed the aisle to support the measure, Fox News reported. The measure follows reports from earlier this year indicating that the Consumer Product Safety Commission was exploring a ban on the appliance due to health concerns.

OMG took a look at Federal Election Commission (FEC) data regarding popular Democrat fundraiser group ActBlue. Their investigation found what O’Keefe calls “a bizarre amount of data” on donation activity from individual donors, particularly senior citizens. According the FEC data, some individuals are recorded as making thousands of donations a year, adding up to huge amounts – $200,000 or more in some cases. To reiterate, that is not thousands of dollars in donations a year, that is thousands of small donations a year, adding up to tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars under various sole individuals.
Using the publicly available data, O’Keefe headed to Maryland to track down some of the donors from that state and confirm with them if they had indeed been making thousands of small donations a year to ActBlue. […] An Arizona resident, age 80, was recorded as having made 18,672 individual contributions for a total of $170,221.37. The data shows her making contributions up to ten times a day at times. When approached by an OMG reporter, the woman expressed shock at the amount, and claimed she most certainly did not make those donations and was completely unaware that donations were being made in her name with that frequency and for that total amount.

Nineteen states have filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court backing a Christian college’s lawsuit against the Biden administration’s rule banning single-sex dorms. College of the Ozarks petitioned the Supreme Court in February to review the Eight Circuit’s decision not to block a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) directive that redefines sex discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity, forcing colleges to open up gender-specific dorm rooms to the opposite sex. The brief by the attorneys general backs the college’s religious liberty claim, arguing that the case is about “the federal government’s outright failure to address, let alone balance, antidiscrimination policy and interests with religious beliefs.”

The proposed ban is outlined in Assembly Bill 599, from Democratic Assemblymember Chris Ward. The Education Committee approved AB 599 last week unanimously; it now heads to the Appropriations Committee. The bill argued that students shouldn’t be expelled or suspended for being drunk or high because “high feelings of school connectedness can decrease drug use” — indicating that students should remain in that school environment, rather than being forced out, in order to prevent further drug or alcohol use. Ward characterized this ban as a “public health approach” in the bill language.

“Today’s action paves the way for the life-saving medication to reverse an opioid overdose to be sold directly to consumers in places like drug stores, convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations, as well as online,” the FDA said in a press release. Narcan, the brand name of the nasal spray naloxone, will switch from prescription to over-the-counter status within the next several months, the agency said.
