Researchers claim that moose are potentially a leading cause of climate change and that the species should be balanced, suggesting they are “one of the biggest potential single sources of carbon emissions from wooded parts of Norway.” The Norwegian University of Science and Technology studied moose in Norwegian forests for several years and concluded that the species have a major effect on vegetation growth and are altering the carbon cycle by dining on tree buds. “Moose are an ecosystem engineer in the forest ecosystem, and strongly impact everything from the species composition and nutrient availability in the forest. A grown animal can eat 50 kilograms of biomass each day during summer,” Gunnar Austrheim, an ecologist at the NTNU University Museum, said in a press release. Moose tend to eat birch and young samplings in clearcut forests, an act researchers claim is where the ungulates “gobble up” possible carbon storage in trees. [Note: First cows. Now Moose. What next? Unruh: Now parents texting own kids to do chores could go to jail

A civil and religious rights organization has issued a warning to the public about a new precedent for “harassment,” a precedent under which a parent repeatedly texting a child over undone chores could end up in jail. The warning comes from the Rutherford Institute and results from the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court not to address a Texas law regarding electronic harassment. “The government must not be given the power to criminalize speech it deems distasteful or annoying,” said constitutional attorney John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute. “Nowhere in the First Amendment does it permit the government to limit speech in order to avoid causing offense or hurting someone’s feelings, protect government officials from criticism, discourage bullying, penalize hateful ideas, combat prejudice and intolerance, and the like.” The Texas law has been described as “so vague and overreaching as to make it illegal for a parent to repeatedly text a teen child about neglected chores.”

Pearce: The Tolerance of Texts

We live in an age of censorship. Books are being banned, if not outright then at least from the school curriculum. They are not being burned, at least not officially, but that will be their fate when they are no longer tolerated on library shelves. For those of us who have read George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, this is all a little creepy. In that book, the Ministry of Truth is responsible for removing all traces of the ideas of the past from the public’s perception. Even the language is manipulated and altered into something called “newspeak” in which antiquated ideas and words are banished. And then there is the widespread use of “doublethink”, in which self-contradictory thought processes are used as a means of self-indoctrination. Orwell was inspired to write Nineteen Eighty-Four as a cautionary satire on the totalitarian regimes that were rampant in the last century: Nazism, fascism and communism. In each of these secular fundamentalist tyrannies, “newspeak” was employed to keep all public discourse within the limits imposed by ideological constraints, whereas “doublethink” was the means by which the logical absurdities inherent in ideological precepts could be kept in place. This was achieved by government coercion, the ministries or departments of “Truth” being the agents and agencies of propaganda. Let’s fast forward to our own time.

Grant: Amy Wax and Academic Freedom

The investigation into the polarizing law professor violates the most basic tenets of academic freedom. […] One of the central complaints in Ruger’s letter is that Wax’s speech in the classroom and in public “leads reasonable students to conclude that they will be judged and evaluated based on their race, ethnicity, gender, national status, or sexual orientation rather than their academic performance and ‘true merit.’” He quotes students who believe “it is ‘impossible to fathom’ that Wax will ‘treat non-conservative, not-white students fairly.’” This seems concerning. But plenty of faculty around the country, and at Penn, express strong views about the merits of the demographic groups into which their students fall. In 2021, Anthea Butler, Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Penn, published a book titled White Evangelical Racism which is mentioned in her bio on the department’s website. The book’s thesis is that “Racism is a feature, not a bug, of American evangelicalism,” and Butler concludes her historical review by speaking directly to her subjects: “Evangelicals,” she writes, “you have a problem. That problem is racism.” This racism, she argues, “is hurting others. Your racism is actively engaging in killing bodies and souls.” […] The Wax affair represents an even more clear-cut case of academic freedom. As of this writing, no unrelated policy violation has been alleged that might offer a pretext for her firing. If she is sanctioned, it will be as a result of the views she has expressed and nothing else. This puts those of us who believe in free speech in the difficult position of defending someone whose views we may not like (much like the ACLU). But, that the content of Wax’s comments is difficult to defend is exactly why they need to be defended from university sanction by believers in academic liberty. The bounds of academic freedom have always been contentious by definition, and shrinking the sphere of acceptable speech will only serve to position other current and future scholars closer to the edge than they previously thought they were. […] Freedom for a professor like Amy Wax ensures freedom for everyone.

Jewell: Michigan Supreme Court Considers Forcing Judges To Use Preferred Pronouns For Attorneys, Litigants

The Michigan Supreme Court sent a notice on January 18 that it was considering an amendment to Rule 1.109 of the Michigan Court Rules to force courts to comply with attorneys’ and parties’ desired pronouns in speech and in writing. Now, over a dozen Michigan judges and attorneys have expressed concern for what the rule’s implications would mean for free speech and religious liberty. “Parties and attorneys may … include any personal pronouns in the name section of the caption, and courts are required to use those personal pronouns when referring to or identifying the party or attorney, either verbally or in writing,” the proposed rule states. […] Michigan judges and attorneys are writing to the court and speaking out about the problematic amendment. In an eight-page response to the proposed rule, William R. Bloomfield, general counsel for the Diocese of Lansing, said that it would be a direct violation of the First Amendment. “In brief, requiring courts, i.e., judges, to use a person’s own designated personal pronouns is . . . […] The Michigan Supreme Court is receiving comments on the proposed change to Rule 1.109 through May 1.

Amid bipartisan criticism it was too slow to act, the Biden administration is accelerating efforts to stave off an epic financial crisis as regulators seized control of a newly failed bank in New York while assuring account holders at the shuttered Silicon Valley Bank in California their money will be protected and made available soon. […] “Today we are taking decisive actions to protect the U.S. economy by strengthening public confidence in our banking system,” the agencies said in a joint statement. “This step will ensure that the U.S. banking system continues to perform its vital roles of protecting deposits and providing access to credit to households and businesses in a manner that promotes strong and sustainable economic growth.” The statement came as officials disclosed that Signature Bank had failed and was being seized by regulators in New York. With more than $110 billion in assets, Signature Bank is one of the largest bank failures in U.S. history behind the $175 billion Silicon Valley Bank that collapsed last week. Plans announced Sunday to fully reimburse deposits made in the collapsed Silicon Valley Bank and the shuttered Signature Bank will rely on Wall Street and large financial institutions — not taxpayers — to foot the bill, Treasury officials said. “For the banks that were put into receivership, the FDIC will use funds from the Deposit Insurance Fund to ensure that all of its depositors are made whole,” said a senior Treasury Department official, who spoke to reporters Sunday about the plan on the condition of anonymity. “The Deposit Insurance Fund is bearing the risk,” the official emphasized. “This is not funds from the taxpayer.”

Financial regulators have closed Silicon Valley Bank and taken control of its deposits, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. announced Friday, in what is the largest U.S. bank failure since the global financial crisis more than a decade ago. The collapse of SVB, a key player in the tech and venture capital community, leaves companies and wealthy individuals largely unsure of what will happen to their money. According to press releases from regulators, the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation closed SVB and named the FDIC as the receiver. The FDIC in turn has created the Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara, which now holds the insured deposits from SVB.

Li: Regulators close crypto-focused Signature Bank, citing systemic risk

“We are also announcing a similar systemic risk exception for Signature Bank, New York, New York, which was closed today by its state chartering authority,” the Treasury Department, Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said in a joint statement Sunday evening. The banking regulators said depositors at Signature Bank will have full access to their deposits, a move similar to that which was made to ensure depositors at the failed Silicon Valley Bank will get their money back.

Jackson: Sorry Silicon Valley: SVB’s Collapse Is Not a Big Deal

In a world in which finance has become dizzyingly complex and specialties have grown ever narrower, it is refreshing to observe a classic bank run in the form of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) collapse. SVB is a holding company containing a broker-dealer and a bank. Only the banking component appears to have failed. This is the second largest bank failure in U.S. history, and in a weakening economy, panic has set in. SVB’s downturn coincided with widespread decline in banking stocks and for good reason. Around half of all VC-backed startups do business with SVB. It is a critical player in biotech, cybersecurity, and social media, but really the name says it all: it was the most important publicly traded bank specializing in Silicon Valley. SVB was so ubiquitous that startups were encouraged or felt pressure to work with the bank to gain access to venture capital. A classic bank has short-term deposits and long-term assets. Depositors loan their money to the bank for an interest rate payment. That bank loans that money to fund useful projects that earn a higher interest rate payment. As long as the depositors do not withdraw their funds, the bank earns a profit. The deposits are liabilities to the bank and the loans are assets to the bank. Almost every single bank in the world uses “fractional reserve banking” in which only a fraction of cash deposits are retained in the bank at a given point in time. If enough depositors withdraw their funding at once, then the bank collapses. If key depositors withdraw their funds from the bank, that can scare other depositors into withdrawing their money from the bank, ultimately resulting in a state regulator to call in the bank and call in the FDIC. […] So, why not worry? One reason not to worry is that how a bank fails matters.

Ballasy: Federal workers owe $1.5B in back taxes after GOP remedies die under Democrat legislative control

Federal workers with outstanding tax bills numbered 149,000, and their combined tax debt totaled $1.5 billion as of 2021, according to a new Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration audit, as legislative remedies for the problem proposed by Republican lawmakers over more than decade have gone nowhere. Finding that “the number of delinquent Federal civilian employees has increased by 32% from Fiscal Years (FY) 2015 to 2021” and their “related balances due” have increased by almost 36%, the IG report concluded that the IRS has failed to adequately prioritize delinquent federal works for compliance.

[…] According to a Government Executive report, the IRS is required to fire employees who are “willfully out of tax compliance” under a 1998 law. In 2021, Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) introduced the Federal Employees and Retirees with Delinquent Debt Initiative, which would have prohibited federal workers with an unpaid tax liability from employment with the federal government. The bill never came to a vote in the Democrat-led Senate.

[…] “This training includes information about different identities, the importance of language, and how to be a better ally,” the agenda for the training states. “If you’re curious about LGBTQ+ topics, have some questions that you’ve always wanted to ask, or wish to learn what all the letters mean, this training is for you.” […] The training would also cover “sex assigned at birth vs. gender identity vs. gender expression” and “defining words such as: dysphoria, dead name, transitioning, intersex, asexual, aromatic, Two-Spirit, queer, nonbinary,” as well as something called “neopronouns.”

Reese: Parents Fight Elite High School’s Lottery System Used To Increase Diversity

Philadelphia parents are pushing back against a prestigious high school’s lottery admissions system aimed at increasing diversity among students, according to The Wall Street Journal. In the 2021-2022 school year, Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School, a top-rated magnet school that frequently places graduates at Ivy League universities, shifted along with other Philadelphia special-admission schools from a merit-based admissions process to a lottery system, according to the WSJ. Parents within the district are challenging the new admissions process, releasing a 51-page-report detailing how the school district is being “systematically dismantled” from the switch. […] “The only compassionate way to bridge the achievement gap is to focus on raising the floor to help the students who are falling behind, not lowering the ceiling for the few who are thriving,” Eric Santoro, a parent of two Masterman students, told the WSJ.

Oregon’s 2022 Death with Dignity Act report confirms the first out-of-state patients have traveled to the state seeking lethal drugs, with three out of the 278 total 2022 deaths recorded for patients with out-of-state residencies.
The actual number of deaths for out-of-state patients may be higher, as the Oregon Health Authority notes it “does not receive death certificates from other states” and therefore cannot be certain of the total amount.
“We should all be concerned that pro-euthanasia legislators in Oregon are trying to open the industry to the rest of the world,” Lois Anderson, executive director of Oregon Right to Life, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

On Friday, The Post Millennial contributor Savanah Hernandez posted a conversation she had with a student at the University of Texas at Austin and as he tried to explain his “white privilege” to her, “she decided to take the opportunity to deprogram him in live time.” “I grew up as a white man and you’re the exact opposite, you know? And so it’s like, my experiences are gonna be different from yours,” he said. “How come?” Hernandez immediately asked. “I think, you know, there’s a thing of, like, white privilege,” he answered. She then asked, “What privileges do you have that I don’t have?” And left the student stumped.

On March 1, a 25-year-old man named Chase Allan was shot and killed by police officers during a traffic stop in a Utah suburb. On Wednesday, bodycam footage was released that shows the leadup to the officers opening fire on Allan’s car. Allan was pulled over in his BMW by police in Farmington, a Salt Lake City suburb, around 3:20 pm after an officer spotted his illegal license plate. After pulling Allan over, an officer walked up to the vehicle and tapped on the driver-side window. Allan, who was holding a cell phone, cracked the window open. The officer told Allan, “The reason you were stopped today is there is no registration on your vehicle.” “I don’t need registration, and I don’t answer questions,” Allan responded.

If overwhelming public opposition were sufficient to halt the drive to repeal Michigan’s decade-old Right to Work law that Big Labor political operatives launched a few months ago, this lobbying blitz would already be at a standstill by now. On February 13, Michigan journalist Bruce Walker filed a story for the Center Square news service publicly announcing the results of a scientific online poll conducted by SurveyUSA, a national pollster with an “A” rating from the FiveThirtyEight web site.The SurveyUSA poll found that 74% of Michigan’s registered voters support retention of their Right to Work law, which prohibits terminating employees merely because they refuse to fork over dues or fees to a union they personally have chosen not to join, but which wields monopoly-bargaining power over compensation and discipline matters in their workplace. Just 14% of registered voters support the return of forced union financial support as a job condition. The poll also showed that opposition to union bosses’ bid to destroy Right to Work is very strong among Michigan voters regardless of their political party affiliation, gender, age, race, employment status, education level, or where they live in the state.

The Vatican enforces the rule among priests – but there are growing calls to end the ban. It comes after Germany’s Catholic Church voted for a resolution requesting that the Pope end the obligation for priests to be celibate.

Using the entire machinery of the state, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte began issuing a rolling set of government decrees culminating in Italy becoming the first country in the world to implement a national lockdown. These mandates would set the stage for lockdowns throughout the Western world.
