Showalter: That claim about three Chinese spy balloons on Trump’s watch is deflating fast

The Milley boys at the Pentagon have come up with a new public relations “save” for Joe Biden and his pathetic indecisiveness about a China spy balloon brazenly traversing the continental United States before it was shot down over the Atlantic yesterday. According to the Pentagon’s website, defense.gov: . . .[…]

So the whole story about Trump supposedly knowing about and ignoring the presence of three comparable spy balloons from China is falling apart fast. What’s being described never happened, and what did happen was not like what happened this past week. It’s just spin, another bid to give Joe Biden a public relations ‘save’ in the wake of the public relations disaster this balloon incident is amounting to, exposing both Joe’s and America’s weakness. This incident rather resembles the Liz Cheney-promoted lie that President Trump knew about Russian bounties on the killing of American soldiers in Afghanistan and did nothing. Or the one about Trump supposedly insulting the American war dead in Europe while he was on a trip there. Those stories, too, were debunked severely when the facts came out, and intriguingly, both also came from the Pentagon’s lie shop.

Eastman: Franklin’s Warning: A Republic . . . If You Can Keep It

This essay is adapted from a speech given on September 23, 2022, during the Constitution Week events at Lake Havasu, Arizona. “Well Doctor what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” is one of the more famous questions in American history. Elizabeth Powel asked this of Benjamin Franklin on September 17, 1787, the last day of the Constitutional Convention. He replied, “A republic . . . if you can keep it.” Franklin was a delegate to the convention that had met behind closed doors for more than three months to address questions about the future of American governance. The delegates did not publicize their efforts until they emerged that day to present a newly drafted Constitution. From there, delegates to specially elected state conventions debated the document and put it to an up or down vote. A republic replaced the confederation of states when the ninth state ratified the Constitution on June 21, 1788. Ratification by all 13 states did not occur until May 29, 1790. Elizabeth Powel’s intimation that monarchy may have been an alternative may seem far-fetched today, but independence from Great Britain had occurred less than a dozen years prior, in 1776. The recent death of the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II offers a bridge from present to past as it calls to mind the shared history between the United States and Britain. Queen Elizabeth’s ancestor King George III was the monarch when America declared independence. At the queen’s funeral, her crown, scepter, and orb were dramatically displayed on the coffin, symbolizing the power, authority, and sanctity of the monarchy.

There is a fascinating and chilling survey on the state of free speech at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The newly released Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) survey shows a growing fear among faculty over their ability to speak freely in classes or other forums on campus. Conversely, a majority of students believe that it is acceptable to shout down or block speakers who hold opposing views. The survey captures the downstream impact of students who have been taught in their primary, middle, and high school educations that speech is harmful and preventing free speech is a noble and necessary action. A recently discussed poll showed roughly 60 percent of students say that they fear speaking openly in class. That percentage is consistent with other polls taken across the country. The MIT polling shows that many faculty feel the same way and that the perceived intolerance on campus has increased dramatically in the last few years. MIT is a microcosm of these concerns and underlying confusion over free speech and academic freedom protections.

D’Angelo cautiously pulled the evidence out of the bag to present to the jury. Spectators in D.C. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly’s courtroom were on the edge of their seats. What would the mystery bag reveal? Would it disclose the group’s intricate but failed plot to overthrow the government? A detailed list of weapons the “seditionists” planned to use in service of their dastardly deed? Names of targeted officials?

In the last several weeks I have been saying to watch the state of South Carolina for how both Republican and Democrats wings of the UniParty, RNC and DNC respectively, plan to use South Carolina as the mechanism for the 2024 illusion of choice. What I call the RNC and DNC roadmaps. Essentially the RNC/DNC constructs are the roadmaps, from the club system – two private corporations, to control the 2024 primary election outcomes. This is all about controlling the mechanisms of elections and creating the illusion of choice while the invisible hands of the big donors and club officers control the operations. You might remember how South Carolina was the inflection point for Biden in the 2020 primary. It was the SC primary when former President Obama (Black Lives Matter) and Congressman James Clyburn (AME Church network), aligned to select Joe Biden as the control mechanism to ensure Bernie Sanders was defeated.

[…] The RNC club roadmap for Ron DeSantis is also looking to South Carolina, New Hampshire and Georgia as control mechanisms to stop President Trump from winning the nomination. This has been part of a plan in the works for a long time (mid 2021). The Nikki Haley and Tim Scott operations in South Carolina are part of the strategy; along with Chris Sununu in New Hampshire (despite backpedaling caused by CTH sunlight). Brian Kemp is being leveraged in Georgia, and within the big picture push overall, the ‘Ready for Ron’ establishment is leveraging the Republican Governor’s Association (RGA) as an institution to have a much bigger role in 2024. In a recent addition to the “Twitter Files,” Matt Taibbi revealed to the public how Twitter — the preferred social media platform of politicians, academics, and journalists — co-opted the algorithmic blacklist of a bipartisan neoliberal propaganda outfit known as Hamilton 68. Hamilton 68 was a digital dashboard that, as my colleague Emily Jashinsky recently discussed, was used to perpetuate and mainstream the myth of Russian interference in American politics through algorithmic censorship and suppression. But it wasn’t just egghead professors, left-wing activist journalists, and the tragically narcissistic (Adam Schiff) who perpetuated the thoroughly repudiated lie that Russia determined the outcome of the 2016 presidential election by hijacking the internet. Hamilton 68 was of unique interest to the unelected members of the American government who staff the national bureaucracy and compose the federal civil service. It was — and likely still is — used by these bureaucrats on a regular basis to substantiate and launder bogus intel into the government’s policy-making narrative to further establish a rule of permanent bureaucracy and chip away at the democratic nature of the American republic. Amanda Milius, a former member of the Trump administration and the former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Content at the State Department, recently confirmed this when speaking to The Federalist.

In response to last week’s “Twitter Files” takedown of the Hamilton 68 dashboard, which purportedly tracked Russian influence campaigns on social media, the dashboard’s sponsor issued a response blaming “the media, pundits, and even some lawmakers” for misunderstanding and misrepresenting the data. The congressional record tells a different story, however. “At a bare minimum, the U.S. government needs to have an understanding of what Russia is doing in social media,” Clint Watts, the mastermind behind the Hamilton 68 dashboard, told the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation during hearings on Jan. 17, 2018, regarding “Terrorism and Social Media: Is Big Tech Doing Enough?” “The Hamilton 68 platform I’ve tried to provide to the U.S. government directly through multiples agencies” would do so, Watts suggested, stating that “regardless of the outcome of the election in 2016,” we should “want to equip our intelligence agencies, our law enforcement agencies, and the Department of Defense with just an understanding … just an understanding of what Russian active measures are doing around the world.” “There is no excuse for it,” Watts concluded. “I can’t understand it.” Watts’ 2018 Senate testimony bolstering the Hamilton 68 dashboard as the means of “understanding … what Russia is doing in social media,” cannot be squared with attempts by the dashboard’s host, the Alliance for Securing Democracy, to extricate itself from the latest scandal exposed by “The Twitter Files.”

Kesslen: Navy divers recovering Chinese balloon debris off Atlantic coast for investigation

The balloon was shot down by a F22 fighter jet over Myrtle Beach, SC, and landed in just 47 feet of water, which should make its recovery relatively easy, US officials said. Cops in Horry County, where the balloon was shot down near, warned residents that “members of the US Military are coordinating to collect debris; however, fragments may make it to the coastline.” Recovery ships are being used to scoop up the debris, which is spread out over 7 miles of ocean. The Pentagon clearly wants to recover ever piece of the balloon it can, using the expertise of Navy divers to search the chilly waters, the New York Times reported.

Given the balloon may have more, not less, surveillance capability than satellites, may have itself been designed eventually to adopt offensive capability, and may have been intended to gauge the American reaction to incursions, the Biden hesitation and fear to defend U.S. airspace and confront China makes no sense. Contrast Ukraine: Why discount the dangers of strategic escalation in a third-party proxy war, but exaggerate them to the point of stasis when a belligerent’s spy balloon crosses the U.S. heartland with impunity? Craven brought the Students For Life of America Human Rights Tabletop display to the university and set it up in a common area. […] But as word of the display made its way around the campus, a hostile pro-choice mob showed up. The members of the mob began with making jokes, taking pictures, and holding up signs. The scene escalated into a protest with a large crowd that blocked access to the table and yelled hateful comments. The display features models of a baby at various stages of development in utero.

Professors often complain about the current crop of students being less intellectually talented than when they began their careers decades back. Such griping is, of course, easy to dismiss — it has occurred for millennia. Unfortunately, this time around the grumbling may be true and not the usual nostalgia for “the good old days.” The anecdotal evidence from textbook reading levels, shortened college syllabi, scrapbook-like research assignments, proliferating college remedial classes, grade inflation, and the popularity of “gut” college majors such as Gender Studies, is indisputable. We have also invested hundreds of millions in our schools yet test results such as the SAT are flat over the past half century. Add the countless stories of illiteracy among high school “graduates” despite falling class size and expensive reforms. Judged by the standards of evolution, Americans may be going backwards. The best evidence of this decline are data from the highly respected General Social Survey on mean IQ by decade among graduate students, undergraduates, and high school students (a tip of the hat to Charles Murray on Twitter). This is a complicated subject given how America’s demography has altered, and measuring IQ via surveys might be iffy, but the numbers, even if a bit unsure, are alarming.

Institute for Justice: Town Wants Mural Torn Down Because it Shows … Donuts

Town officials in Conway, New Hampshire, are trying to force a local bakery to paint over a mural made by local school students. In June, students from Kennett High School painted a colorful mural above the front door of Leavitt’s Country Bakery on White Mountain Highway. The mural features a New England mountain landscape made entirely of baked goods, such as donuts, scones and muffins. Leavitt’s owner Sean Young said at the time, he thought the mural “would be a fun project for kids and good for the community.” But no good deed goes unpunished. Two months later, town officials decided that they would treat the students’ mural as a “sign” subject to strict size and location restrictions. Why? Simply because the mural’s mountainscape depicts baked goods like those sold at the bakery. Thus, officials believe the sign should be treated as an advertisement. But Conway’s treatment of Leavitt’s mural as a “sign” is discriminatory and contrary to the First Amendment. The Institute for Justice is helping the bakery fight back.

In reality, maybe they want to back off from those flimsy claims. In New Jersey, a Republican city councilwoman for the city of Savreville, Eunice Dwumfour, was gunned down in what may well have been political violence, which is a hell of a lot more than a “threat.” The motive for the apparently targeted hit on her by a masked man, which happened as she was driving her car home, is as yet unknown, but there are plenty of political players in the dirty sewage of New Jersey politics who didn’t like her.

The Southwest jet headed to Cancun, Mexico, was given the OK to take off from Texas’ Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, but apparently took too long.

By the time it tried to begin its ascent, the Boeing 767 cargo plane was approaching its landing. Quick-thinking pilots on the cargo plane were forced to swiftly make a go-around, narrowly avoiding a collision. The pilot of the cargo plane can be heard telling the Southwest flight to ‘abort’ its takeoff – which they refused to do – and it instead took off just 75 vertical feet from the oncoming cargo flight. The near-crash came just one month after a similar close call was averted at John F. Kennedy International Airport last month in which an American Airlines plane crossed a runway while a Delta Airlines’ Boeing 737 plane was preparing for takeoff.

Chappell: An unusually high number of whales are washing up on U.S. beaches

Researchers are trying to figure out a mystery: Why are so many humpback whales, right whales, and other large mammals dying along the U.S. East Coast? One possible explanation is a shift in food habits. And while theories are circulating that blame the growing offshore wind industry, scientists say there’s no proof to support that idea. Since Dec. 1, at least 18 reports have come in about large whales being washed ashore along the Atlantic Coast, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Network. The losses are hitting populations that were already under watch, due to ongoing rises in unexpected deaths. […] Even early in the unexpected humpback strandings, questions were being raised about the possible harm done to whales by wind farms. Those questions have grown during the current surge, as interest is surging in offshore wind energy projects that require using powerful devices to map the ocean floor.

The questions have only grown louder in the past two months, as crews perform surveys off of New York and New Jersey to learn details about the seafloor, both to learn where facilities could be located and where cables could be run.
