The “National Strategy to Develop Statistics for Environmental-Economic Decisions” was announced as a joint initiative between the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), and represented the work of “27 Federal departments, agencies and offices” to “account for natural assets.” The initiative notes that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) — a measure of the overall economic output of the U.S. — and other economic statistics were developed when “nature’s ability to provide seemed limitless,” and that an accurate accounting of natural resources is necessary. […] Tracking natural capital will allow economists to have “early-warning mechanisms” for the “physical and transition risk from climate change,” according to the initiative. Nelson: Now Secret Service admits it has some Biden Delaware visitor records

What a difference three days makes. The Secret Service admitted Thursday that it does, in fact, have information on visitors to President Biden’s Wilmington, Del., residence during the time he kept classified records in the home’s garage. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi claimed Monday that “we don’t independently maintain our own visitor logs because it’s a private residence.” But Guglielmi’s tune had changed Thursday, when he said that “the Secret Service does generate law enforcement and criminal justice information records for various individuals who may come into contact with Secret Service protected sites.” Meanwhile, Fox News quoted an unnamed source as promising that “the Secret Service is prepared to provide available background information on vetted guests to Biden’s residence if requested by Congress.”

Betz: Supreme Court investigation fails to identify leaker of Dobbs draft decision

Chief Justice John Roberts called the leak an “egregious breach of trust.” The day after the leak Roberts called upon the Marshal of the Court to investigate the situation and find the source who leaked the document to Politico. Investigators interviewed more than 120 interviews of nearly 100 employees — all of whom denied disclosing the opinion, the court said. […] “The investigation has determined that it is unlikely that the Court’s information technology (IT) systems were improperly accessed by a person outside the Court,” the report says. “After examining the Court’s computer devices, networks, printers, and available call and text logs, investigators have found no forensic evidence who disclosed the draft opinion.”

Schwerha: Republican House Finance Subcommittees Are Swamped With Diversity, Equity And Inclusion

Multiple Financial Services subcommittees will continue a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) even as Republican lawmakers assume leadership roles. Republican North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry, chairman of the Financial Services Committee, announced six subcommittees and their Republican chairs on Jan. 12, according to a press release. The Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion, which existed during the 117th Congress, was not listed as an active committee, however DEI was repeatedly referenced in each subcommittee description. “McHenry is a lot better than Maxine Waters, obviously. He did the right thing by getting rid of the subcommittee on DEI but making [DEI] an emphasis on every subcommittee is not a serious thing,” Mike Gonzalez, Angeles T. Arredondo E Pluribus Unum Senior Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “We have serious problems in this country. It is, at best, unserious and at worst very, very worrisome.”

President Joe Biden tapped Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to co-chair a team tasked with fixing a supply chain crisis that left grocery shelves empty. The secretary never even showed up to a meeting, records show. In June 2021, as supply chains were being crippled by the effects of pandemic-era restrictions and Biden’s rampant spending, Vilsack pledged to participate in meetings with the newly formed Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force, an initiative Biden said would solve the budding crisis with a whole-of-government approach. But those promised meetings never occurred. There are no records showing that Vilsack or his designees participated in any meetings with the task force after its launch, according to the Department of Agriculture’s response to a Freedom of Information Act request submitted by the Functional Government Institute.

Arnold: Father Lashes Out At School Board Meeting Over Sexually Explicit Book Being Taught to 7 Year-Olds

A Canadian father of a fourth grader lost his cool with his daughter’s school district after finding out what she is being taught in the classroom. During a school board meeting, David Todor confronted the district after he discovered a book that contained sexually explicit content that was given to his seven-year-old daughter. “Who’s interested in knowing and affirming, celebrating, my daughter’s sexual orientation?! Why is the school board facilitating child abuse and has these books available in the library?” Todor said that was caught on video by journalist Cosmin Dzsurdzsa. Todor went on to say that the book, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, was approved by the school and made accessible to fourth and fifth graders. The father read a few lines from the book, which spoke of bestiality and male body parts.

This may dismay those hoping to find some meaning in the march of time, but the logical consequence of its absence is to leave room for an individual to make a significant difference to the course of history.

In Personality and Power, Ian Kershaw, the distinguished British historian best known for his two-volume biography of Adolf Hitler, identifies 12 people who managed just that over one period in one place. The book is an attempt to view “the history of the twentieth century in Europe through the prism of some of the century’s outstanding—for better or, often, worse—political figures.” But it is less a portrayal of the continent’s relatively recent past than an examination of the roles played by some of those who shaped it. Each were “either a head of state or head of government,” a demarcation that excludes those lower down the pecking order—Trotsky, purged again—as well as artists, scientists, and military men.
