Kinnard: Trump to hold 1st public campaign event in South Carolina

Former President Donald Trump is planning to hold the first public campaign event of his 2024 White House bid in the early-voting state of South Carolina. Campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung told The Associated Press on Thursday that Trump will visit South Carolina later this month. No other details were immediately announced. Since announcing his latest presidential run in November, Trump has limited his public campaign appearances to events at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida before an invited crowd or in a virtual setting. The South Carolina visit, first reported by Politico, comes as Trump’s campaign has faced criticism, even among some longtime allies, for its low profile since the announcement.

The jury trial of Richard Barnett, the man famously photographed with his feet on a desk in Nancy Pelosi’s office on January 6, 2021, is underway in Washington, D.C. Nearly two years to the date of his arrest, Barnett finally had a chance to defend himself in court on multiple charges, including obstruction of an official proceeding. But it was not the fiery, outspoken Barnett who provided the most jaw-dropping testimony in the trial so far. To the contrary, one of the government’s own witnesses confirmed under defense cross-examination that “agents provocateur” were heavily involved in instigating the events of January 6. Captain Carneysha Mendoza, a tactical commander for U.S. Capitol Police at the time, testified Wednesday how a group of agitators destroyed security barriers and lured people to Capitol grounds that afternoon: . . . […] It was a stunning admission, representing the first time a top law enforcement official stated under oath (to my knowledge) that a coordinated, experienced group of agitators engaged in much of the mischief early that day. House Oversight panel to probe China money to university where Biden worked, classified memos found

The chairman of the main House investigative committee announced Thursday that he is expanding his probe of the Biden family to examine the University of Pennsylvania’s reliance on Chinese donations during the time it employed President Joe Biden and hosted his think tank, where classified documents were recently found improperly stored. House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer announced the decision after Just the News reported Wednesday night that the Ivy League university, affectionately known as Penn, collected $67.6 million in donations from Chinese sources between 2013 and 2019, two-thirds of it while employing Joe Biden as a guest professor and hosting his Penn Biden Center.

Phillips: Court of Appeals Agrees to Expedite Kari Lake’s 2022 Election Case

In a brief order, issued on Jan. 9 and made public the next day, the court ordered a reset of “the matter for conference on February 1, 2023,” and agreed with Lake’s arguments that her challenge should be handled as a “special action petition.” The court date was reportedly scheduled for March.

Lawyers for Democrat Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, the state’s former secretary of state, has until Jan. 17 to respond and argue why Lake’s challenge should be rejected, according to the order. Lake had petitioned both the state’s Appeals Court and Supreme Court after a Maricopa County judge rejected her case after a two-day trial in December.

In a report released last week, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) proposed issuing public policy to help local journalism and combat misinformation. The GAO reported that local news’ lack of economic viability was the problem causing over 2,000 local newspapers to close since the early 2000s.

“[T]he market may not produce public interest content sufficient for a well-informed society,” stated the GAO. “Experts conveyed that the main goal of journalism is to have a well-informed society, and policies that aim to support this goal need to be innovation-friendly, forward-looking, and inclusive.”

So many entities are currently mandated in the relationship with patients that the joy of medicine has become the drudgery of working for a large, costly bureaucracy. Care of patients has thus been degraded, and the ability of individual doctors to re-establish the proper doctor-patient relationship has become nearly impossible.

And this task force is dreaming big. California might seem like an odd place to start looking for race-based reparations. California was a free state from the moment that it entered the Union in 1850. It desegregated schools years before Brown v. Board and it repealed Jim Crow laws well before many other states. Nevertheless, a state that never had slaves is moving as quickly as it can to take money from people who never owned slaves to give it away to people who never were slaves. And the price tag is going to be steep. […] $475,000 for every black Californian! For those wondering, with 2.25 million black Californians, that’s a total of at least $1.069 trillion. And they haven’t finished tallying yet! The number is going to get higher! […] Even Republicans, predictably, have let themselves be dragged as well, with nearly one-in-five now backing reparations.
