The Supreme Court ruled by a 5-4 vote to keep Title 42 in place just hours ahead of its planned midnight Wednesday end. The Covid-era public health policy that allows border agents to immediately expel migrants will now remain in place until legal battles involving its end play out in court. Agents will now be able to use the policy to expel border crossers for at least the next several months, leaving an onslaught of migrants who were expected to rush the U.S.-Mexico border after Title 42 was lifted in limbo. Smith: What are Senate Conservatives Going to Do about McConnell?

The script is sickeningly familiar by now, isn’t it? In 1987 I published The Last Intellectuals: American Culture in the Age of Academe which elicited heated responses. Only now do I see I got something wrong—as did my critics. Some had objected to a term I introduced, “public intellectual,” as redundant and misleading. Others rejected the main argument. I proposed a generational account of American intellectuals. For earlier American intellectuals, the university remained peripheral because it was small, underfunded, and distant from cultural life. The Edmund Wilsons and Lewis Mumfords earlier in the 20th century to the Jane Jacobs and Betty Friedans later saw themselves as writers and journalists, not professors. But I missed something, the dawning takeover of the public sphere by campus denizens and lingo.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is relying on a network of foreign investors to present an illusion of broad support for the agency’s proposed climate disclosure rule, which threatens to increase structural risks to the American economy. In March, the trade agency outlined new regulations requiring firms to report their estimated energy emissions. While the SEC technically only has jurisdiction over publicly traded companies, the broad nature of the agency’s proposal aims to coerce private businesses into carbon calculations that track the behavior of their customers. Firms that fail to comply with government standards are subject to fines and lawsuits. A startup claims it has launched weather balloons that may have released reflective sulfur particles in the stratosphere, potentially crossing a controversial barrier in the field of solar geoengineering. Geoengineering refers to deliberate efforts to manipulate the climate by reflecting more sunlight back into space, mimicking a natural process that occurs in the aftermath of large volcanic eruptions. In theory, spraying sulfur and similar particles in sufficient quantities could potentially ease global warming. It’s not technically difficult to release such compounds into the stratosphere. But scientists have mostly (though not entirely) refrained from carrying out even small-scale outdoor experiments. And it’s not clear that any have yet injected materials into that specific layer of the atmosphere in the context of geoengineering-related research. The Washington state Department of Health’s climate curriculum instructs teachers to focus on “emotions” over “rational thinking”, according to curriculum lesson plans. The department recently released a five-part curriculum to help students learn about the “intersections of biological, societal, and environmental issues.” The second phase of the curriculum, “Climate Change & Pregnancy,” tells educators and students to “pay attention” to their emotions as “for too long” science has caused “rational thinking” to be prioritized. (Rational thinking? Good God, no! What has science to do with rational thinking?!) “Climate change and pregnancy”? Pray tell, “educators,” does climate change cause pregnancy? Prevent it? Or both at the same time? In any case, man caused climate change is causing “pregnancy change,” right? (The hell with rational thinking, we feel that’s the case! We want it to be the case!)
