Late on Wednesday evening following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s address to a joint session of Congress, members of the United States Senate were back to squabbling over the 4,155-page, $1.7 trillion omnibus bill being forced by Democrats with assistance from some Republicans such as Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky — and the massive bill might be in deep trouble. Heine: Kari Lake Expert Witness: Missized Ballots That Caused Election Day Chaos Could Not Have Been An Accident
On the first day of trial in Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake’s election challenge Wednesday, her lawyers focused on the Maricopa County election equipment failures that caused chaos on Election Day and disenfranchised voters. Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson previously dismissed eight out of the ten claims Lake made in her lawsuit. In his order allowing Lake’s case to go forward, Thompson said that she would have to prove that misconduct occurred, and that it resulted in “identifiable lost votes” affecting the outcome of the election. Lake’s lawyers attempted to make that case with their bombshell revelation that a review of random ballots found that 48 out of 113 (42.5 percent) were “19-inch ballots produced on 20-inch paper,” causing them to be rejected. Clay Parikh, a witness who examined the defective ballots on behalf of the Lake campaign, said someone must have changed the printer configurations. Comments Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made on Tuesday show why he has become the single biggest obstacle to GOP success. The Kentucky Republican claimed giving more money to Ukraine is “the No. 1 priority for the United States right now, according to most Republicans.” The new $1.7 trillion Democrat spending bill he enthusiastically supports would give Ukraine another roughly $45 billion in assistance, bringing the total over the past eight months to more than $100 billion, a staggering figure even if it weren’t happening during a time of inflation, looming recession, and other serious domestic problems. Sansone: Senate Republicans Betray the Base
Senate Republicans are at it again. The Senate vote this past Thursday for a stopgap funding bill to keep the government running through December 23rd passed 71 to 19—with 22 Republicans lending their yeas. The intention is to provide more time to reach an agreement before the year closes out, after which the GOP takes control of the House of Representatives. Getting a bill through to the current Democrat-controlled House of course gives the Left the upper hand in ongoing spending negotiations, ensuring that anything that gets past the split Senate will have to include funding for their ideological pet projects. It seems intuitive that Republicans should refuse to provide significant policy concessions and push to hold out until the changing of the guard in the House. But Minority Leader Mitch McConnell does not agree. Congressman-elect George Santos’ emotional narrative of having Jewish grandparents who fled Europe during World War II appears to be untrue, like much of the rest of his campaign biography, according to genealogy websites reviewed by the Forward. Santos, a Long Island Republican, has said that his father was Catholic and his mother was Jewish, and that both faiths “are mine.” The very first line of the “About George” page on his campaign website states: “George’s grandparents fled Jewish persecution in Ukraine, settled in Belgium, and again fled persecution during WWII.” […] A chorus of constituents and government watchdogs have called for Santos to step aside or for Congress to refuse to seat him in January since a blockbuster New York Times investigation on Monday reporting that much of his storybook biography appears to have been made up. The Times said that neither Baruch College, which Santos said he was graduated from in 2010, nor Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, where Santos said he had worked, had any record of him. Here’s something that’s been bugging me. How did US intelligence analysts pick up on what they deemed a dangerous novel virus in China at a time when there’s no good evidence China had picked up on it or was concerned? How did they spot the signal in all the noise of a normal Chinese flu season?
US intelligence officials have admitted in various media reports to tracking the coronavirus outbreak in China since mid-November 2019, and even briefing NATO and Israel at the time. Yet at no point has any detail been provided on what caused them to take this unusual action. Here’s what we’ve been told, as gathered by DRASTIC’s Gilles Demaneuf. A new academic report from the University of Pittsburgh suggested that the Marine Corps drop all gendered identifiers for training personnel. The academics advised the Marine Corps that recruits should no longer refer to drill instructors as “sir” or “ma’am,” according to the Marine Corps Times. The Army, Navy and Coast Guard have already de-emphasized the use of gendered terms, instead having recruits refer to training staff by their last names or as “drill instructor.” The University of Pittsburgh’s Neuromuscular Research Lab, Warrior Human Performance Research Center and Department of Sports Medicine and Nutrition received $2 million to study gender-integrated recruit training in military settings in 2020. The Biden administration on Monday barred Customs and Border Protection officials from sharing information about the magnitude of illegal border crossings at the southern border without approval from the Department of Homeland Security, Breitbart reported. The gag order points to the possible end of Title 42, a Trump-era rule that allowed agents to turn illegal immigrants away because of the pandemic, as reason to limit information coming from the border. The Biden administration’s directive specifically bans CBP officials from sharing data with media outlets as tens of thousands of migrants amass at the southern border. When the First World War began, British women suffragists sent an Open Christmas Letter “To the Women of Germany and Austria” imploring peace as the first Christmas of the war approached. Pope Benedict XV, December 7, 1914, begged for a truce, asking: “that the guns may fall silent at least upon the night the angels sang.” These requests were officially rebuffed. Nevertheless, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1914, an estimated 100,000 British, French and German troops near Ypres in Belgium along the Western Front, ceased fighting. The thunderous booming of artillery fell silent that night.
