Last week, the regulator authorized state-licensed pharmacists to circumvent doctors by directly prescribing Paxlovid, as long as they determine it’s safe after reviewing “the most recent reports of laboratory blood work” for kidney or liver problems and medications that patients are taking. “Apparently, someone in government decided that there wasn’t enough Paxlovid being prescribed” seven months after its approval, Philadelphia cardiologist Anish Koka wrote skeptically in his newsletter this week. […] In a recently updated Pfizer trial analysis of those at “standard risk” for severe COVID, however, just a handful of hospitalizations or deaths separated placebo recipients from those who took Paxlovid, including in a vaccinated subgroup. For the month of June overall inflation increased 1.3% bringing the annual rate of inflation to 9.1% as calculated. Economists and financial pundits are “shocked”, “surprised” and the proverbial “unexpected” is running amok again amid the typeset. The reality of Joe Biden energy policy being the origin of our current inflation crisis is being avoided at all costs by the pretenders. The federal reserve raising interest rates can only impact the demand side, but it’s the supply side (total energy policy) creating the problem. Table-A shows the overview. This is what economic disaster looks like. Americans are making less money at exactly the moment when everything they buy from gas to groceries is more expensive and not just a little more expensive, a lot more expensive.

Thornton: Phony Rhetoric About ‘Our Democracy’

Ever since the political rise of Donald Trump we have heard mantras chanted about “our democracy,” usually in the context of how Trump allegedly is destroying it. This cliché obscures the actual nature of our Constitutional political order, which created a mixed government more typical of a republic than a democracy rightly understood; and was based on a realist vision of human nature whose destructive excesses the Founders sought to mitigate without diminishing the citizens’ freedom. More devious, the sloppy use of “democracy” distracts from the fact that progressives for over a century have used the camouflage of “democracy” to hide their systematic dismantling of that Constitutional order that protects the freedom of individuals, civil society, and states from the tyranny of concentrated “large powers and unhampered discretion,” as Woodrow Wilson called for in 1887. Much of the democracy happy talk reflects the global high estimation of democracy, its “best of good names,” as historian Michael Mandelbaum describes its universal prestige as a form of government “honored and valued everywhere” with “the same kind of aura that surrounds medicine,” and esteemed as “a high human achievement that improves the lives of those fortunate enough to come into contact with it.” Like “natural,” “green,” and “organic,” it’s a term that reflexively evokes positive approval of whatever ideal or policy it’s used to promote. But such marketing reinforces a false understanding of the American political order, one predicated not on human perfectibility and utopian ambitions, but on humanity’s permanent destructive weakness and corruptibility caused by our universal “passions and interest” that are “sown in the nature of man,” as Madison said. These indelible traits create diverse political “factions,” associations that compete with each other for the power to gratify both interests and passions. Moreover, . . .

I have surveyed the programming of every Fortune 100 company and have confirmed that all of them have now adopted so-called DEI programs. I have documented many examples: Bank of America teaching employees that the United States is a system of “white supremacy”; Walmart telling workers they are guilty of “internalized racial superiority”; Lockheed Martin forcing executives to deconstruct their “white male privilege”; and Disney promising to abolish the words “boys” and “girls” in its theme parks and inject “queerness” into its children’s programming.

Two years beyond the chaos of 2020, it’s become orthodox belief for many—especially on the radical Left but many on what I would call the innocent Left as well—to dismiss the entirety of the American Founding and the American Founders as nothing more than a slavocracy to be run by wealthy plantation owners. To be sure, much of this sea-change in attitude has come from the controversial but, admittedly, successful campaign by The New York Times with its 1619 Project, begun in 2019. When that project came out, I had the chance to analyze its underlying flaws and its wrong assumptions in this essay at The Imaginative Conservative. Though the Times said nothing critically new about slavery—the New Left has been saying such things since the mid to late 1960s—the paper’s claims, now understood by many as simply the truth, are a bit shocking as well as disconcerting. In particular, I would note, the 1619 Project firmly centers American History around Virginia’s history, relegating that of, say, New England, New York, or New Mexico to something only marginally quaint. […] Slavery, as an institution, declined rapidly between 1763 and 1793, the exact period of the American Founding, and many of the Founders understandably believed that God or nature had decreed a proper death for the inhumanity of it all. Its decline came from a strong surge in feelings about Natural Rights and Natural Law.

Yet, with the most burdensome regulations and high tax rates, Newsom’s California is arguably the most unfree state in the union. In return for these steep costs, the state’s public institutions, infrastructure, and services are among the country’s worst. […] Amid Newsom’s anti-Florida ad campaign, the governor was vacationing at the upscale digs of his Montana in-laws—escorted by his ample state-paid security detail. That is odd, given Newsom’s California labels Montana a homophobic hellhole, and will not even reimburse state employees who dare to convention there. Hypocrisy and elite virtue signaling, however, are now trademarks of California politicians—and illustrate how little elected officials care for the victims of their ideological agendas.
