Roach: The Supreme Court Reaffirms Gun Rights
The Court’s opinion, authored by Justice Clarence Thomas, is a good one, clearly and rigorously reasoned. It does away with the backdoor attempt concocted by appellate courts since the 2008 Heller decision to revive gun control laws under the rubric of balancing tests and “intermediate scrutiny.” The opinion, coupled with Justice Samuel Alito’s concurrence, also disposes of some of the more facile arguments against permitting concealed carry, like suicides or street crime, which happen even with restrictive laws in place. Like the 2008 Heller opinion, the latest opinion looks to the types of laws in place at the time of the founding to illuminate the scope of gun rights. This is a useful approach, little different from courts’ approaches to other parts of the Constitution, such as the comparison of modern causes of action to those available at common law to determine when a jury is required under the Seventh Amendment.
The Court also intimates, as it did in Heller, that protection may vary with how widely used a weapon is, as certain restrictions on exotic weapons existed at the time of the founding. This is a bit more problematic. After all, what is widely owned interacts with the historical body of laws, constitutional or otherwise. […] It is noteworthy that one of the first federal firearms laws, the Militia Act of 1792 actually mandated members of the militia—defined as all men between the ages of 18 and 45—maintain a musket, bayonet, and other suitable equipment. What would that look like today: mandatory ownership of an AR-15 and a certain number of magazines? […] The recent opinion does concede “individual self-defense is ‘the central component’ of the Second Amendment right,” but the individual self-defense component is inherently narrower and would permit only a narrower class of weapons than the broader purpose of defense of the community from enemies “foreign and domestic” envisioned by the Second Amendment.

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court, as expected on Friday, overturned Roe V. Wade, leaving the issue of abortion to the states to decide. […] The court also overturned Casey v. Planned Parenthood, which declared that restrictions were allowed as long as there was not an “undue burden.” “Abortion presents a profound moral question,” Alito wrote. “The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. The Court overrules those decisions and returns that authority to the people and their elected representatives.” Clarence Thomas, concurring, wrote: “in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.”

Gedeon: Blue-city prosecutors in red states vow not to press charges over abortions
Dozens of elected prosecutors across the country — including a number representing blue cities nestled inside red states — are pledging to not press charges against patients or providers over abortion in the wake of Friday’s Supreme Court ruling giving states full control over abortion policy. So far, 84 district attorneys and other prosecutors from 29 states and territories and Washington, D.C., have signed the statement distributed by Fair and Just Prosecution. Altogether, the officials represent jurisdictions covering 87 million Americans, according to the organization. Significantly, the signatories include district attorneys in states like Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas — all Republican-controlled states with abortion “trigger bans” set to activate within a month, now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. Other prosecutors have also joined in via public statements online.

So, we can afford 120 days in 2020 of mass rioting, $2 billion in damage, some 35 killed, and 1,500 police injured. We can easily survive an Afghanistan, and our utter and complete military humiliation. There was no problem in abandoning some $70-80 billion in military loot to terrorists. Who cares that we tossed off a billion-dollar new embassy, and jettisoned a $300-million refitted air base, as long as our pride flags were waving in Kabul? Certainly, we can afford to restructure all our universities, eliminate free expression and speech, and institute Maoist cultural revolutionary fervor in our revered institutions of higher learning—once the world’s greatest levers of scientific advancement and technological progress. We can jettison merit in every endeavor, from banning the world’s great books to grading math tests to running chemistry experiments. And still, a resilient America won’t notice.

A coalition of 20 black congresswomen, led by “Squad” member Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.), on Thursday wrote a letter to President Joe Biden that urged him to declare a public health emergency in anticipation of a Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. […] The letter says that pro-life measures are “unprecedented and calculated attacks on our bodily autonomy” that harm “the lives and freedom of Black women.” While black women get more abortions than women of any other race, just 32 percent of black Americans support abortion on demand without restrictions, a Gallup poll found in 2020.

Border Report reported Monday that “a shelter for Muslim migrants opened over the weekend in Tijuana, the first of its kind in all of Mexico.” This is no small-time effort: “The Latino Muslim Foundation, based in San Diego and Tijuana, raised half a million dollars to make the facility a reality.” Meanwhile, fifty people on the terror watch list have been apprehended at the Southern border so far this year, and there is no telling how many got across without being caught. Welcome to Old Joe Biden’s America. […] The shelter is, of course, a humanitarian effort. […] How wonderful. But will any effort be made there to determine if any of the migrants are listed on the Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB), or should be? Of course not. That would be “Islamophobic.” As if that weren’t enough, Iran International English reported late Friday that “the Biden admin has decided to lift a controversial ban on the entry into US of Iranian men who’d been conscripted into IRGC, a Foreign Terrorist Organization, as part of their compulsory military service, as they don’t ‘pose a national security or public safety risk.’” The IRGC is Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, which the Trump administration designated a terrorist organization in 2019. Schizophrenia is among the most serious mental illnesses, causing lifelong unemployment and disability in many patients and reducing their life expectancy by about 15 years on average. Untreated schizophrenia is also a high risk factor for extreme violence.
Grossman: School districts pricing out parents on record requests by charging tens of thousands in ‘exorbitant fees’
Parents around the United States are being charged tens of thousands of dollars, including some fees into the millions, for public records requests in their school districts, Fox News Digital has learned. Fox News Digital spoke with parents around the county – such as in Michigan, Oregon, and Rhode Island — as well as with public records experts who said they believed schools were using exorbitant fees in order to price parents out of the information they are legally entitled to, such as those related to curriculum. A parent from Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland told Fox News Digital that she requested emails that spanned one month between various entities and was asked to pay $5,000. “I never got the [records] because that’s well beyond what I’m willing to pay for information my tax dollars already paid for,” she said. FCPS was contacted for comment but did not immediately respond.
