Ennocenti: New York’s attorney general has President Trump in a Catch-22

President Trump recently lost an appeal and must testify in a civil investigation by New York State attorney general Letitia James. Her action was taken based on testimony and evidence given by former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. This is the same Michael Cohen who pleaded guilty to eight counts, including criminal tax evasion and campaign finance violations. While we may not be privy to the inner workings of our justice departments in the United States, it seems rather convenient that the government could take evidence from Michael Cohen regarding his claims of the improprieties of President Trump’s financial records after Cohen pleaded guilty to eight counts. We could question the entire agreement the Justice Department made with him. It is necessary to point out that Michael Cohen was Trump’s attorney, not his accountant or financial adviser. This is necessary because Mr. Cohen may or may not be aware of the rules of accounting. He has, after all, pleaded guilty to tax and financial crimes. He may be guilty of incompetence more than outright fraud. I wonder if his attorneys ever considered that defense. Michael Cohen claims to have documents showing that President Trump uses different valuations of his wealth based on what purpose the statements are required for. Mr. Cohen may not be aware that this is consistent with the standards of accounting set forth by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). If he is aware, he may have offered this information in a misleading way to save himself from a lengthy imprisonment.

Wolfensberger: Crack appears in Jan. 6 committee wall

On Monday, June 13, the first crack appeared in the otherwise cohesive wall of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol. The fissure opened when committee Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) told reporters after that day’s hearing that the committee would not be making any criminal referrals to the Justice Department of former President Donald J. Trump or anyone else. Almost immediately, Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) tweeted that the committee “has not issued a conclusion regarding potential criminal referrals,” and will do so “at an appropriate time.” Another committee member, Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.) issued her own conclusion that “if criminal activity occurred, it is our responsibility to report that activity to the DOJ.” Other committee members, taken aback by the chairman’s comments, were stumbling to respond, but most chose to keep their powder dry until the committee could talk it over privately. Meantime, a committee spokesperson released a statement to CNN the following day which attempted to clarify the chairman’s comments — sort of a sideways walk-back: . . . […] The second reason for not filing a criminal referral is . . . […] A third reason . . .[…] The select committee has several mandates to fulfill before it expires at the end of this year. It has too little time to engage in politically fraught, criminal referrals lacking any impetus or impact. Let Justice do the justice.

Morrow: Democrats Seek To Suppress Pro-Life Google Search Results

Congressional Democrats wrote to Google’s parent company on Friday to pressure the search engine to suppress results that offer alternatives to abortion. Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.), Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D., Mich.), and 19 other lawmakers wrote urging Google to “limit the appearance” or add “user friendly disclaimers” of pro-life clinics in search results. The Democrats said they want to “ensure women seeking health care services are directed to the basic information they request.” Animosity toward pro-life pregnancy centers and offices has increased since a draft opinion of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision was leaked in May, showing a plan to overturn the original 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling. Dozens of crisis pregnancy centers have been vandalized since the leak. Many of these attacks have not been federally investigated, as the Justice Department official responsible has refused to intervene.

Lamb: Federal judge orders Michigan GOP gov. candidate Ryan Kelley to turn in guns

A federal judge ordered Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley to turn in his guns due to his pending misdemeanor charges, which he has said are politically motivated. Federal prosecutors have filed four misdemeanor charges against Kelley, who was near the Capitol complex on January 6, 2021, but said he never entered buildings. The charges include “knowingly enter[ing] or remain[ing] in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority to do,” which can include sectioned off areas not necessarily inside a physical building. Kelley’s attorney asked Judge Robin Meriweather “to make an exception for Kelley to the firearm ban — which has been a standard condition of release for about 800 people charged in connection with the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021,” the Detroit Free Press reported. Kelley does not have paid security and wants to be able to carry as a matter of personal protection as a political candidate. He is the favored candidate among Republicans for the gubernatorial nomination to take on Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer in November.

Jane’s Revenge has claimed responsibility for more than a dozen firebombings and acts of vandalism at pregnancy centers, pro-life organization buildings, and churches around the nation since an unnamed source leaked a premature version of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson opinion, crimes that the FBI just announced they plan to investigate. Garland faces calls for his resignation after refusing to utter a peep of criticism about the prolific, widespread assaults on pro-life Americans and their property.

On Monday, Just the News reported that Rep. Auchincloss’ chief of staff was involved in more shenanigans at the Capitol involving Republican lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Geo.) Capitol Police caught Massachusetts Democrat Rep. Jake Auchincloss’s chief of staff defacing posters outside the Capitol complex office of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and referred him for criminal charges, but the same U.S. Attorney’s office that pursued the Jan. 6 defendants declined to approve an arrest warrant, according to police documents and interviews. Police and Auchincloss also confirmed Monday that the congressman’s office was involved in allowing comedian Steven Colbert’s production team into the Capitol complex last week in an incident that led to security concerns and the arrest of seven members of Colbert’s team.

An already overworked grand jury in Washington, D.C., presumably will be very busy in the days to come. For nearly 18 months, at the behest of Joe Biden’s Justice Department, grand juries in the nation’s capital have issued a nonstop flood of criminal indictments against Americans who protested Joe Biden’s election on January 6, 2021; hundreds of people who peacefully entered the building as police stood by face serious felony charges punishable by decades in prison. Even those accused of low-level misdemeanors such as “parading” in the Capitol have been sentenced to months in jail. Now, following last week’s arrest of Democratic Party activists disguised as staffers for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” for unauthorized incursions into Capitol buildings, one must assume prosecutors are hastily preparing similar indictments against Colbert’s team to reflect a fair handling of the two incidents. Colbert’s employees, after all, were caught not once but twice unlawfully entering areas of the Capitol complex—in Justice Department parlance related to January 6, that is known as a “restricted area”—on June 16. […] Obstruction of an official proceeding: The post-Enron law intended to prevent the destruction of evidence in an ongoing criminal investigation has been weaponized for the first time against political protesters. Biden’s Justice Department has charged at least 240 Americans with obstruction of an official proceeding; several, including so-called QAnon shaman Jacob Chansley, who pleaded guilty to obstruction after spending nearly 10 months in solitary confinement despite video showing police letting him in the Capitol and advising him to protest peacefully, face years in prison. Colbert’s insurrectionists—if the word can be applied to people who walked into a public building without proper authority on January 6, it can apply here—had been denied special press credentials to cover the January 6 committee hearing last Thursday in the Cannon House Office building but went anyway. “When Capitol Police spotted members of Colbert’s team at the Jan. 6 Committee area, they were schooled [sic] away, and left the House office building,” Fox News reported.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Friday said that after “repeated failures” to order vaccines, DeSantis “reversed course” and decided to allow health care providers to order the shots for children between six months old and five. But Florida surgeon general Dr. Joseph Ladapo said the state has always allowed providers to place orders for vaccines. DeSantis said Thursday that Florida discourages COVID vaccination for young children and would not place orders for the vaccine to be distributed to them, but the state would not block providers from acquiring it themselves.

While it’s true that men such as infamous University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas will not be permitted to compete in upcoming FINA competitions, the organization’s new policy has caveats that allow men to compete against women so long as they undergo irreversible and risky sex experiments as young minors.

The Navy warship had to fire a warning flare to wave off the Iranian Revolutionary Guard speedboat coming straight at it before turning head on during a tense encounter in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, officials said Tuesday. The incident on Monday involving the Guard and the Navy comes as tensions remain high over stalled negotiations over Iran’s tattered nuclear deal with world powers and as Tehran enriches uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels under decreasing international oversight.

The documents, obtained by Fox News Digital from the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, show that the Army’s future leadership is being taught to acknowledge its ‘whiteness’ and ‘privilege,’ and to answer training questions through the lens of critical race theory. Judicial Watch had to sue the US military under the Freedom of Information Act twice before the training slides were released, according to Fox News. Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, characterized the racial training materials as ‘anti-American’ and ‘propaganda.’ ‘Our military is under attack – from within,’ Fitton said in a release. ‘These documents show racist, anti-American CRT propaganda is being used to try to radicalize our rising generation of Army leadership at West Point.’ […] The documents consist of over 600 pages of training materials, including presentation slides, and accompanying questions. The Biden State Department this month named its first ever special representative for racial equity and justice. The newly minted envoy, Desirée Cormier Smith, once slammed white diplomats for being overly “protective” of the United States and lacking the “empathy” of their minority counterparts.

Smith, a self-described “Black activist,” made the comments in an October 2020 interview. At the time, Smith served as senior policy adviser for Open Society Foundations, the think tank funded by Democratic billionaire donor George Soros. The State Department on Friday announced Smith’s appointment to the post, which was created to “confront systemic racism and injustice around the world.” The State Department described Smith as a “racial justice expert with a deep and steadfast commitment to equity and justice for all.”

Cashill: Netflix, Ron Howard Do Seth Rich a Major Injustice

“It should have been an open and closed case of a tragic robbing,” writes Gretchen Small in Bustle.com of the 2016 Seth Rich murder, “but what ensued was an alt-right conspiracy theory movement designed to take attention off of Donald Trump and put pressure on Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.”

Small accurately summarized the thesis of “A Murder in D.C.,” an episode in the Netflix series, “Web of Make Believe: Death, Lies and the Internet.” I suppose she could be forgiven her failure to know that Rich wasn’t robbed. The producers failed to share that rather critical detail, one detail out of many that allowed them to keep airheads like Small ignorant of the real scandal — the media scandal. In this case, the cover-up may well have been worse than the crime. Although I do not know who killed Seth Rich, I do know that the media did everything in its power to discourage anyone from finding out. Ron Howard, a loyal Democrat, served as executive producer of this visually well-crafted series. Not surprisingly, the episode in question does little but showcase the media’s ongoing role as protector of Democratic secrets. […] According to Butowsky, Seth’s father, Joel Rich, told him he knew that Seth and his older brother Aaron were involved with the DNC email leak. Joel chose not to go public lest people think his sons were “responsible for getting Trump elected.” Although the Riches would later deny many of Butowsky’s claims, no one disputes his offer to hire a private investigator for the Riches or their acceptance of that offer. In order to make Butowsky and all other investigators look like right-wing conspiracy nuts, Netflix mentioned nothing about Ratner’s revelations. Nor did its producers mention the most prominent conspiracy nut of all, former DNC head Donna Brazile.

Audubon Society: A Brief History of Avian Drag

Birds have long inspired drag queens and played key roles in queer culture. This winter, backyard birders in Pennsylvania obsessed over a Northern Cardinal exhibiting bilateral gynandromorphism, a rare phenomenon where individuals display both observable male and female characteristics evenly split down their body. Beige female coloring dominated the cardinal’s left side, while bright red male coloring overtook the right. Birds exhibiting the condition are more commonly known as chimeras, or “halfsiders.” Coverage of the sighting quickly ignited conversations about another chimera cardinal—possibly the same bird— that was captured on camera two years ago in the same region during the winter of 2019. Queer Twitter took notice and quickly stanned the bird, deeming it a trans and non-binary icon. Pattie Gonia, an environmental drag activist, even created a look inspired by the cardinal shortly after it went viral: She highlighted half of her face in scarlet red while keeping her facial hair, and on the other side she painted her shaved face light brown, applied a dramatic eyelash, and finished with a bold lipstick and brow.

A new machine learning powered brain scan can detect when a person has early stage Alzheimer’s with near perfect accuracy, and researchers are hopeful it will become available for use in the coming years. Researchers at the Imperial College London, in the UK, used an algorithm that already existed to detect cancerous tumors, and repurposed it to detect early Alzheimer’s with 98 percent accuracy. Detecting Alzheimer’s early allows for treatment to start earlier, gives doctors more time to plan how to approach treatment, and even allows the patient themselves to plan for the future while they are still in a sound mind. While the machine learning system is still in its early stages, the researchers are hopeful it will be available for consumers within the next few years.

Two frat boys from the University of Missouri have been charged in connection with a 19-year-old at the school who was left blind and unable to walk or talk after being forced to down a family-sized bottle of Tito’s vodka. Ryan Delanty and Thomas Shultz were indicted Friday in Missouri’s Boone County in connection with the treatment of Daniel Santulli, a teenager whose family say was forced to drink until his heart stopped last October during pledge month at Phi Gamma Delta. Shultz is facing an additional felony charge of tampering with physical evidence.
