Cleveland: The Supreme Court Refusing To Mess Up Alabama’s Election Is Not An ‘Attack On Voting Rights’
On Feb. 7, in a 5-4 decision the Supreme Court entered a stay of a lower court’s order directing Alabama to redraw its congressional districts ahead of the upcoming primary elections. The Supreme Court has consistently held that the federal courts should not override a state’s election law close to an election. Yet in a dissent joined by Justices Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor, Justice Elena Kagan presented the high court’s stay as an attack on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, black Alabamians’ electoral power, and “all of American democracy.” Democrats and the left-leaning media have likewise framed Monday’s joint decision in Merrill v. Milligan and Merrill v. Caster as “further undercut[ting] the Voting Rights Act.” Contrary to such claims, however, the Supreme Court’s decision yesterday did not address the merits of the Voting Rights Act claim, but merely considered the propriety of the lower court issuing an injunction so close to the election. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in a concurrence signed on to by Justice Samuel Alito, stressed that point, while also countering many of the claims Justice Kagan made in her dissent. To understand these competing arguments, as well as to realize how disingenuous are Kagan and Democrats’ claims that the decision is an attack on the voting rights of black Alabamians, requires both a backdrop to these lawsuits and an historical refresher concerning the state’s congressional districting.

Lyman: AG Says His State Is Under ‘Invasion’ From Illegal Migrants, Threatens To Defy Biden And Defend The Border
Republican Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich issued an opinion Monday calling the crisis at the border an “invasion,” claiming that by declaring it as such the state is allowed to take more action to defend itself against the “invasion.” “The federal government’s failure to secure the border and protect Arizona from invasion is dangerous and unprecedented,” Brnovich said in a statement. “The Founders foresaw that States might need to protect themselves from invasion and made clear in the Constitution that States retain the sovereign power to defend themselves within their own territory.” “The violence and lawlessness at the border caused by transnational cartels and gangs satisfies the definition of an ‘invasion’ under the U.S. Constitution, and Arizona therefore has the power to defend itself from this invasion under the Governor’s authority as Commander-in-Chief,” the statement continued. “An actual invasion permits the State to engage in defensive actions within its own territory at or near its border,” the statement said. Since the Capitol building is considered the scene of the crime, every trial will be held in the District of Columbia—which means the jury pool will be composed solely of residents living in the nation’s capital. To say this is a problem for Trump supporters facing even minor charges is a huge understatement. […] Biden’s Justice Department has been reliant on the Beltway trifecta—partisan federal judges, news outlets, and prospective jurors—to codify its punitive prosecution and criminalize political dissent. The vast majority of Georgia Democratic senator Raphael Warnock’s record-setting fundraising haul came from outside of Georgia, according to campaign finance records. Warnock received 84 percent of his itemized individual donations from out-of-state supporters and 16 percent from Georgia residents in the final three months of 2021. […] About 17 percent of the money came from donors in California, 10.6 percent from New York, 8.9 percent from the Washington, D.C., area, and 6.3 percent from Massachusetts, according to his year-end report filed with the Federal Election Commission last month. What will be hard to miss at the Olympics are the logos of some of our nation’s best-known companies, which remind us of their shameless kowtowing to Beijing for the sake of their bottom line. A new, comprehensive report by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, titled “Corporate Complicity Scorecard,” reveals what these companies have traded away and how much their Faustian bargain with the CCP has endangered all of us. The report, produced jointly by VOC and Horizon Advisory, evaluates eight well-known American corporations — Amazon, Apple, Dell, Facebook, GE, Google, Intel, and Microsoft. It presents “broad-ranging assessments of the nature of American corporations’ involvement in China” based on a set of indicators, including compliance with Chinese data regimes and supply chain exposure to forced labor risk. The report assigns a letter grade between A to F to the companies, with Facebook and Google receiving the highest score of “B,” while GE, Intel, and Microsoft got the lowest score of “F.”

Head of German team Dirk Schimmelpfennig also blasted ‘unacceptable’ conditions for his athletes, saying isolation rooms are too small, not hygienic enough, the food is poor and PCR tests that athletes must take to free themselves are not being given. Natalia Maliszewska, a Polish speed skater, described being repeatedly moved into and out of quarantine over successive days due to conflicting Covid test results, an experience she described as a ‘trauma’ that left her ‘crying and crying’. During one ‘night of horror’ she said officials dragged her out of bed at 3am in order to take her back to the athlete’s village after ruling she was Covid-free – only to later say they made a mistake before taking her back into solitary.

Money is just another commodity, no different from petroleum, pork bellies, or pig iron. So money, like all commodities, can rise and fall in price, depending on supply and demand. But because money is, by definition, the one commodity that is universally accepted in exchange for every other commodity, we have a special term for a fall in the price of money: we call it inflation. As the price of money falls, the price of every other commodity must go up. And what causes the price of money to fall? The answer is very simple: an increase in the supply of money relative to other goods and services. As the Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman explained, “Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon in the sense that it is and can be produced only by a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than in output.” Inflation has been around almost as long as money itself.

Nobel: The Interest Rate Puzzle
The financial markets swooned in January in response to the statements and growing perceptions that central banks must soon begin the painful task of slowing inflation. The old saw on Wall Street is, “as goes January, so goes the year.” If so, we are in for a very volatile year. The irony is, of course, it was those very central banks by their own actions, and their politically motivated maneuvering, which freed legislators around the world from the painful tasks of keeping a rational budget. If markets had to absorb all the debt created by governments, and if that debt were not purchased by central banks, rates would already be higher than they are now. As it is, the bellwether 10 year US Treasury yield has swiftly moved up about a half percent in the past months or so, even before the Federal Reserve has officially started tightening. This is a product of bipartisan failure.

Children have a more difficult time recognizing faces that are masked than adults, which could harm their ability to “navigate through social interactions with their peers and teachers,” according to a newly released study. Erez Freud, a researcher at York University, who published his findings on Monday in the journal Cognitive Research: Principles & Implications. Freud, along with two professors from Israel’s Ben-Gurion University, gave 72 children between the ages of 6 and 14 the Cambridge Face Memory Test, which measures facial perception abilities by presenting people with and without masks while upright and inverted.

The Supreme Court of Virginia dismissed a legal challenge Monday attempting to block Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s executive order lifting the mask mandate previously placed on schools by former Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam. “We dismiss the petition because the relief requested does not lie against any of the respondents … Save for Governor Youngkin and the School Board, the initial petition and the proposed amended petition do not allege a source of any relevant duty incumbent on any of the other respondents,” the court ruled.

This should profoundly disturb the American people. Fringe ideas on college campuses today are the ruling orthodoxies of tomorrow. Despite potential challenges, the American university system retains hegemony on access to the credentials necessary to join the ruling class. Every single one of tomorrow’s politicians, administrators, and technocrats is sitting in a college classroom today. Excepting Hollywood and Silicon Valley, no institution in American life has more power over shaping the future of the country than America’s universities. Bad ideas there become bad ideas everywhere.

Owen: Overdose deaths cost US $1 trillion annually, bipartisan report finds
The drug overdose epidemic in the United States, now primarily driven by synthetic opioids like ultra-deadly fentanyl, costs the nation roughly $1 trillion a year, according to a new bipartisan congressional report released Tuesday. “Whether measured in lives or in dollars, the United States’ drug overdose epidemic should shock everyone,” the report reads. “It is unacceptable.” […] Drug overdose deaths have more than doubled in recent years, from about 44,000 in 2013, to more than 100,000 between May 2020 and April 2021.
