Dinan: Voting integrity group sues to stop NYC noncitizen voting, says it will dilute Black voters’ power
A group dedicated to voting integrity efforts sued Wednesday to block New York City’s new law allowing noncitizens to vote, saying it will illegally dilute Black residents’ political power. The Public Interest Legal Foundation sued on behalf of four Black residents, saying the city council adopted the noncitizen voting law despite warnings that Black voters could be hurt. PILF, run by former Justice Department voting rights specialist J. Christian Adams, pointed to several instances during debate over the legislation where backers explicitly said the measure was about racial voting power.

MacFarland: Oath Keepers founder spends 6 hours with House January 6 Committee
The founder and leader of the far-right militia group the Oath Keepers spent six hours talking to the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack on Wednesday, his attorneys confirmed to CBS News. Stewart Rhodes has been charged with seditious conspiracy and other crimes stemming from his alleged involvement in the Capitol breach and is currently being held without bail. According to his attorneys, Rhodes told lawmakers about his upbringing, schooling, military career and his work in founding and leading the Oath Keepers through the fall of 2020, including his view of the group’s philosophy and mission. Both he and his attorney invoked the 5th Amendment when lawmakers asked about late 2020 through 2022, aside from general questions about his views on government, his attorneys told CBS News.

Sadler: Florida Senate passes bill declaring religious services ‘essential,’ limiting future bans on worship
Florida lawmakers have passed a bill that would prohibit future “emergency orders” like those enacted during the COVID-19 response from closing down religious institutions if any businesses are allowed to stay open. Florida’s Republican-led Senate approved the measure (SB 254) in a 31-3 vote Thursday. A companion bill filed in the House, HB 215, was advanced Wednesday and awaits a floor vote. Under the new measure, houses of worship would be considered “essential services” and no emergency order may “directly or indirectly” cancel public religious services so long as any businesses remain open.
The move comes after religious groups along with conservative politicians and commentators raised the alarm over the past two years when churches and synagogues were told to close their doors while other businesses, sometimes including liquor stores and marijuana dispensaries, were allowed to remain open.

Summers: Top doctor calls on employers to reinstate unvaccinated workers, apologize for firing them
An influential doctor says that people who were fired for refusing COVID shots should be reinstated and are owed an apology. Dr. Marty Makary, a professor at John Hopkins University School of Medicine writing in The Wall Street Journal, maintains that employees who lost their jobs for refusing the jab were unjustly fired. “Public health officials ruined many lives by insisting that workers with natural immunity to COVID-19 be fired if they weren’t fully vaccinated,” Makary wrote. “But after two years of accruing data, the superiority of natural immunity over vaccination is clear. By firing staff with natural immunity, employers got rid of those least likely to infect others.” ‘It’s time to reinstate those employees with an apology,” Makary concluded.

And I think that exploring why it’s a mistake will tell us not only things about adult-child sex and statutory rape but also about fundamental principles of morality.” How about this: A man attempting to have sex with a child gets a free trip into a wood chipper? Loudon County, Va. schools continue to be a hive of controversy. As you may have heard, Virginia’s new governor, Glenn Youngkin, issued an executive order making masks in schools for students optional as of Jan. 24. That hasn’t stopped the left-leaning Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) authoritarians/cry-babies from trying to take matters into their own hands. LCPS has threatened to suspend students not wearing masks, despite Youngkin’s decision to end mask requirements in schools. They sent a letter to some parents, which read, . . .[…] Here’s the kicker: the sitzpinklers working for LCPS are okay tossing kids out for playing by the governor’s rules and not wearing a mask, but they refused to suspend a transgender kid who viciously raped and sodomized a young girl last fall. LCPS decided to merely send zhe/zhim/it to another school where zhe/zhim/it assaulted another young girl. Sounds like “trans privilege” to me. Students understandably walked out in protest.

America would relax the prior Bush Administration’s mild ostracism of Russia after its 2008 invasion of Georgia and softly start anew. The second was President Barack Obama’s hot mic moment in March 2012 in Seoul, South Korea. Obama got caught asking Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to reassure Vladimir Putin.
Or as Obama put it: “After my election I have more flexibility . . . On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space . . . U.S. Special Operations forces successfully carried out a large-scale counterterrorism mission in northwest Syria on Thursday to kill a high-ranking jihadist militant thought to be Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, the leader of ISIS. The raid by the U.S.-led anti-jihadist coalition targeted a large house in Atmeh in the Idlib region where the ISIS leader was hiding, according to an Iraqi intelligence official who spoke to the Associated Press – though the target’s identity is yet to be officially confirmed by the White House. Reports of an explosion inside the house are thought to have come a result of the target blowing himself up according to a senior US official who spoke to the New York Times. The operation is thought to be the largest U.S.-led raid in the province since the 2019 assault which took place nearby and killed former ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and was conducted in a similar style to the raid which resulted in the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011. […] The death of civilians not linked to the anti-terror operation carries echoes of the U.S.’s reputation for collateral damage. It comes after a botched drone strike in Kabul in the final hours of the chaotic American withdrawal from Afghanistan last year killed 10 civilians, including seven children. BlackRock is now so involved with buying houses that they are bidding on whole subdivisions, not just individual homes. They’ve been using free money from the Fed to offer a 50% premium. They then rent those properties out at a tidy profit to those who can no longer afford to buy a home. Is this part of a plan to separate Americans from owning property? Or just another way for the über-corporations to inflate a bubble, make billions in profits, and then sell before it bursts? Russia and China use the same techniques.

Ely, Jr.: Property Rights in American History
First, stable property rights are a powerful inducement for the creation of wealth and prosperity, prerequisites for successful self-government. Conversely, as the English politician and author Edmund Burke declared:” A law against property is a law against industry.” John Marshall agreed that protection of property and contractual rights was crucial for economic growth. Speaking at the Virginia ratifying convention, he insisted that weak government under the Articles of Confederation “takes away the incitements to industry, by rendering property insecure and unprotected.” In short, as a leading scholar had stressed, “Marshall was convinced that strong protection for property and investment capital would promote national prosperity.” The resulting market economy would increase national wealth and benefit all citizens with increased goods. Second, property rights have long been linked with individual liberty. “Property must be secured,” John Adams succinctly observed in 1790, “or liberty cannot exist.” An economic system grounded on respect for private ownership tends to diffuse power and to strengthen individual autonomy from government. Property was therefore traditionally seen as a safeguard of liberty because it set limits on the reach of legitimate government. By helping to preserve the economic independence of individuals, secure private property encourages participation in the political process and willingness to challenge governmental policy. Viewed in this light, the ownership of property represents personal empowerment. As one prominent historian described American society as it neared the break with England, “Men were equal in that no one of them should be dependent on the will of another, and property made this independence possible. Americans in 1776 therefore concluded that they were naturally fit for republicanism precisely because they were ‘a people of property; almost every man is a freeholder’.”

Alvarez: Internal documents show heated back-and-forth between DeSantis and Biden admin over care of migrant children
An ongoing feud over President Joe Biden’s immigration policies is escalating in Florida where Gov. Ron DeSantis is threatening to keep long-standing shelters from caring for migrant children, culminating in a heated back and forth unfolding in internal correspondence obtained by CNN. The Republican governor’s office and the Biden administration are sparring over whether migrant children who arrive at the US-Mexico border alone should be cared for by shelters in Florida, as they have been since 2005. The children, who are in government custody, stay at shelters until they can be reunited with a vetted sponsor, like a parent or relative, in the United States. But in a letter sent to the Health and Human Services Department last week, obtained by CNN, Florida’s general counsel, Ryan Newman, alleged the federal government was participating in a “human trafficking scheme.” HHS, which is responsible for the care of migrant children, said DeSantis’ threat to revoke state licenses from shelters that take these migrants raises “serious legal concerns” and threatened to take the matter to the Justice Department.

National Catholic Register: HHS Announces Reproductive Health Care Task Force to Promote and Expand Abortion Access
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said that, “as we commemorate the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we recommit to protecting and strengthening access to reproductive health care, including the right to safe and legal abortion care that the Supreme Court has recognized for decades. Patients have the right to make decisions about their own bodies. In light of restrictive laws across the nation, HHS will evaluate the impact on patients and our communities.” Becerra named HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Adm. Rachel Levine and HHS Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs Loyce Payce as heads of the task force. Levine, a biological male who identifies as a woman, commented that the task force will “advance policies that improve reproductive health care access within federal programs and services.” Pace said that “advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights is central to our core global health goals.” […] Valerie Huber, the former U.S. special representative for global women’s health at HHS during the Trump administration, now heads the Institute for Women’s Health. She told the Register that, with its new task force, HHS is “looking for every administrative lever they can to promote abortion through programs through policies, regulations, and any other kind of creative, and I would say harmful, interpretations of long-standing federal law and definitions for health and primary care that they are reinterpreting for the purpose of derailing real women’s health gains for abortion.”

Through hard work and his own genius, he made a life for himself in the printing trade, and was able to retire at the age of 42. He then spent the next 42 years of his life, from 1748 to 1790, pursuing his scientific and philosophic inquiries and doing all he could—and this was a very great deal—to benefit his city, state, country, and world. By the time of his death, he was one of the most famous people in the world.
