About 75 percent of those cases are in people who are fully vaccinated, and one person has been hospitalized. One-third of those individuals had traveled internationally; one-third had received a booster. The cases so far have been “mild,” she said. Preliminary data from South Africa meanwhile show that people who have previously had COVID-19 have more protection against the Omicron variant than those who have been vaccinated, the UK Telegraph reported.

Press freedom groups have warned Assange’s prosecution is a grave threat. The Biden DOJ ignored them, and today won a major victory toward permanently silencing the pioneering transparency activist. In a London courtroom on Friday morning, Julian Assange suffered a devastating blow to his quest for freedom. A two-judge appellate panel of the United Kingdom’s High Court ruled that the U.S.’s request to extradite Assange to the U.S. to stand trial on espionage charges is legally valid. […] The U.S. then offered multiple assurances that Assange would be treated “humanely” in U.S. prison once he was extradited and convicted. They guaranteed that he would not be held in the most repressive “supermax” prison in Florence, Colorado — whose conditions are so repressive that it has been condemned and declared illegal by numerous human rights groups around the world — nor, vowed U.S. prosecutors, would he be subjected to the most extreme regimen of restrictions and isolation called Special Administrative Measures (“SAMs”) unless subsequent behavior by Assange justified it. American prosecutors also agreed that they would consent to any request from Assange that, once convicted, he could serve his prison term in his home country of Australia rather than the U.S. Those guarantees, ruled the High Court this morning, rendered the U.S. extradition request legal under British law. What makes the High Court’s faith in these guarantees from the U.S. Government particularly striking is that it comes less than two months after Yahoo News reported that the CIA and other U.S. security state agencies hate Assange so much that they plotted to kidnap or even assassinate him during the time he had asylum protection from Ecuador.

Patteson: Former top DC Guard officials call Army’s Jan. 6 report ‘fiction’
Two former top Washington DC National Guard officials have slammed the US Army’s internal report on its response to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, claiming the document creates a false narrative about what happened that day. The 20-page report, obtained by Politico, describes multiple conversations between Army officials and then-DC Guard commander Maj. Gen. William Walker as part of its explanation for why the National Guard was unable to respond to the Capitol when their support was initially requested. However, Walker — now the House of Representatives’ Sergeant at Arms — claims some of those communications never happened. Walker and Col. Earl Matthews, then a top lawyer for the DC Guard, insist their forces were ready to be sent to the Capitol at any time, contrary to the Army’s report. “It’s whole fiction,” Matthews told Politico. Earlier this month, Matthews alleged two top Army generals — Gen. Charles Flynn and Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt — went a step further in their deception, claiming in a memo that both had lied to Congress about the riot response and describing the Army’s official version of that day’s events an “alternate history … worthy of the best Stalinist or North Korea propagandist.”

Because House Speaker Nancy Pelosi failed to appoint the requisite number of members, the Jan. 6 committee is arguably invalid under its own authorizing resolution. Yesterday, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected former President Donald Trump’s claim of executive privilege, holding that the archivist of the United States could provide a tranche of Trump’s presidential records to the House’s “Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.” In a unanimous ruling, the federal appellate court concluded that President Biden’s conclusion that “an assertion of executive privilege is not in the best interests of the United States” controlled and that the archivist, therefore, must hand over the first of three sets of documents requested. The court added, however, that it would await an assessment from the Biden administration before determining whether other sets of documents must likewise be handed over. […] Given the important legal issue in play, namely executive privilege, it seems likely Trump will seek review by the U.S. Supreme Court. In doing so, Trump’s legal team would be wise to follow the lead of the president’s former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, who just Wednesday filed a complaint in federal court against House’s January 6th Select Committee and the individual committee members.

While this is actually believable (Wicker made a loose comment), what’s unbelievable is that we’re even considering a military confrontation with Moscow over something that does not at all involve a U.S. national interest. Moreover, what else Wicker said, during a recent interview with Fox News host Neil Cavuto, is not reassuring. To wit: “Well, military action could mean that we stand off with our ships in the Black Sea and we rain destruction … on Russia military capability,” the Independent related him as stating. “It could mean that we participate, and I would not rule that out, I would not rule out American troops on the ground.” Biden Administration and the Establishment in general are all-in on this Dr. Strangelove foreign policy.

Elizabeth MacDonough, the chamber’s nonpartisan rules referee, is expected to decide shortly whether language letting millions of migrants remain temporarily in the U.S. can stay in the 10-year, $2 trillion measure. Asked Wednesday whether he would vote to override a decision by the parliamentarian to erase the immigration provision, Manchin told reporters he would not. “The bottom line is you stick with the parliamentarian, that’s all,” he said. “You stick on every issue. You can’t pick and choose.” The House version of the bill would let an estimated 6.5 million illegals in the U.S. since at least 2010 seek work permits letting them hold jobs and avoid deportation for a total of up to 10 years.

Nerozzi: Texas seized enough fentanyl to kill 200 million people this year alone, officials say
The drug seizures are part of Operation Lone Star – a Texas initiative to curb entry of human traffickers and drug runners into the state. According to new data provided by the Texas DPS on Thursday, Operation Lone Star has seized 160 pounds of fentanyl within its targeted area. Other drugs seized within that area include marijuana (13,494 pounds), cocaine (2,430 pounds), meth (1,647 pounds), and heroin (37 pounds). Combining activity inside and outside of Operation Lone Star’s area of interest, the Texas DPS has seized 886 pounds of fentanyl – approximately 200,790,522 lethal doses, according to data provided by the DPS in a slide presentation. […] “The crisis at our southern border continues to escalate because of Biden administration policies that refuse to secure the border and invite illegal immigration,” Abbott said at the time of the operation’s launch.

The question I get most often—the thing that most interviewers want to know, even when they’re pretending to care about more high-minded things—is: What’s it like to be so hated? I can only assume that’s what some of you rubberneckers want to know as well: What’s it like to be on a GLAAD black list? What’s it like to have top ACLU lawyers come out in favor of banning your book? What’s it like to have prestigious institutions disavow you as an alum? What’s it like to lose the favor of the fancy people who once claimed you as their own? So, perhaps I’ll begin by telling you a little bit about myself mainly because I’m not so different from many of you. I grew up, daughter of two Maryland State judges, in a multi-racial suburb in Prince George’s County, Maryland. I attended a community Jewish day school, which I loved. In high school, I worked as a stringer for the Washington Jewish Week and edited my school paper. I attended Columbia University, where I received the Kellett Fellowship for two years of graduate study at Oxford. From there, I earned my J.D. from Yale Law School and then clerked for a Clinton-appointee on the D.C. Circuit.

Rules for thee, but not for me once again after Oregon Democrat Governor Kate Brown was photographed maskless while indoors attending the LGBTQ Victory Fund’s 30th Anniversary Gala in Washington D.C. to be inducted into its Hall of Fame on Saturday. Washington D.C. does not have an indoor mask mandate; Oregon is one of a few states that still have an indoor mask mandate. A video posted to Twitter shows the miserable scene outside of Capitol Hill Elementary School in Portland, Oregon. The elementary school students were filmed eating lunch outside, sitting on buckets, away from friends in 40-degree temperatures, presumably as part of the school’s COVID-19 mitigation policy.

The son of a bank vice president decided to teach about “white privilege” to his students in Sullivan County, Tennessee where the per capita income is $28,429. After he was fired, the media decided to turn him into a victim. […] Sullivan County is 95% white and 2% black. The rate of hungry children in the region is double the national rate and a third of those children live in Sullivan County. At Sullivan Central High School, where Hawn decided to teach about white privilege, 96% of the students are white, 1% are Hispanic, another 1% are Asian, and the number of black students is too small to count. 41% of the students are eligible for the free lunch program. That means their parents meet federal poverty guidelines. Another 9% qualify for the reduced lunch program which indicates that their parents don’t earn very much.

Blume & Gomez: Surgeon general warns of emerging youth mental health crisis in rare public advisory
Citing mounting evidence of ongoing harm, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy on Tuesday issued a public health advisory on the mental health challenges confronting youth, a rare warning and call to action to address what he called an emerging crisis exacerbated by pandemic hardships. Symptoms of depression and anxiety have doubled during the pandemic, with 25% of youth experiencing depressive symptoms and 20% experiencing anxiety symptoms, according to Murthy’s 53-page advisory. There also appear to be increases in negative emotions or behaviors such as impulsivity and irritability — associated with conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. And, in early 2021, emergency department visits in the United States for suspected suicide attempts were 51% higher for adolescent girls and 4% higher for adolescent boys compared to the same time period in early 2019, according to research cited in the advisory. “It would be a tragedy if we beat back one public health crisis only to allow another to grow in its place,” Murthy wrote in a preface to the advisory. “Mental health challenges in children, adolescents, and young adults are real, and they are widespread. But most importantly, they are treatable, and often preventable.”

Disruptions to in-person schooling have caused significant learning loss in math and reading, and widened racial achievement gaps. Millions of students have a basic need: more time in the classroom. […] Reducing in-person class time is not just a disaster for students — it’s also a betrayal of public trust. Congress has passed three separate relief packages, across two administrations, with funds intended to help districts stay open. But tens of billions of dollars apparently remain unspent. […] The closure of schools during the pandemic has caused immense damage to U.S. students. It has also further undermined confidence in the country’s public-school system, as parents with resources have turned to parochial and private options. Reversing those trends will require students to learn in person, at any cost.
