That day’s vile events shoved the nation down a darker path than it might otherwise have trod, but just as the attack inflicted on America was the poisoned fruit of past policy crimes and mistakes, the resultant flowering of government surveillance and information cap-ture grew from roots set far deeper than the rubble from the Twin Towers. Within a month of the assault, a bill called the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act, giving the federal government vast new snooping powers, appeared on the floors of the House and the Senate. The USA PATRIOT Act, soon to lose the USA in standard usage, was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. Voting against it were 66 House members and just one senator: Russ Feingold (D–Wisc.). […] The PATRIOT Act defines “domestic terror” as breaking the law in a manner that “involves acts dangerous to human life” in order to “influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion.” Given how easy it is to break some law while protesting, especially if police come to disperse you, this interpretation has alarming implications for the right to speak out against government actions in a public setting. This can affect Black Lives Matter as easily as Team MAGA.

Barkoukis: After Project Veritas Exposed Murphy’s Plan for State if Reelected, One NJ Dem Is Speaking Out
New Jersey Assemblyman Jamel Holley (D), is calling on the legislature to remove Gov. Phil Murphy’s emergency powers after Project Veritas exposed what the Democrat plans to impose on the state if he wins reelection next week. According to a senior adviser, Murphy will enact vaccine mandates similar to California’s if he wins, but couldn’t do it before the election over concerns about losing independent and undecided voters. A manager at NJ Forward 2021, which is funded by the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, also agreed that after the election’s over it will be “guns blazing” and he’ll do the mandates. To Holley, this is unacceptable and reveals the mandate is not about health or science, but politics.

McEvoy: Right-Wing Pundit Dan Bongino Reportedly On Break From Radio Show Amid Clash Over Covid Vaccine Mandate
Bongino’s sudden and so far unexplained departure from the air follows a public clash over the Covid-19 vaccine mandate imposed by Cumulus Media CEO Mary Berner in September. Several of the company’s radio hosts have already quit or been fired over the rule, which was geared toward an October 11 return to the office. Bongino himself has been fully vaccinated on the advice of his doctors as he is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, his team said. However, the right-wing pundit says he believes vaccine mandates are “unethical” and “immoral.” He threatened to quit his job earlier this month if Cumulus Media didn’t shift on the mandate. “Cumulus is going to have to make a decision with me—if they want to continue this partnership or they don’t,” Bongino told listeners in a recent program.

Schow: Top Pentagon Official Warns: ISIS-K Could Be Ready To Attack West In 6 Months
Colin Kahl, undersecretary of defense for policy, told the committee that the U.S. intelligence community determined ISIS-K could be ready to attack the West in 6 months to a year, and that al-Qaeda could be ready for such an attack in one to two years. ISIS-K is an acronym for the Islamic State’s Afghanistan branch. “We could see ISIS-K generate that capability in somewhere between six or 12 months, according to current assessments [from the intelligence community],” Kahl said, according to The Wall Street Journal. “And for al Qaeda, it would take a year or two to reconstitute that capability. We have to remain vigilant against that possibility.” Kahl also told lawmakers on Tuesday that the U.S. could not determine whether the Taliban would be able to counter a threat from ISIS-K.

The GDP came crashing down in the third quarter, missing expectations and coming in at just two percent. Economists predicted the number would land at 2.6/2.7 percent. “In terms of GDP, 2.6 percent’s what people were looking for. Not that many months ago we were looking for a number closer to 7 percent. This is a disappointment of two percent. Only up two percent,” CNBC reported Thursday morning. […] As inflation on everyday household items continues to soar, the GDP is getting deflated.

In the ad, a young boy in a princess dress opens his front door to find a mysterious new nanny — a goth-looking witch — on his doorstep. When some neighborhood girls question why the boy is wearing a costume when it “isn’t Halloween yet,” he looks sad. […] Chris Buskirk, editor of the conservative journal American Greatness, warned, “They want your children and they will stop at nothing to get them.” Conservative pundit and blogger Samuel Sey noted, “This ad supports two separate kinds of child abuse.”

Blankley: From academics to mental health, school shutdowns took heavy toll on students
Even as progressive school boards, teachers’ unions, and Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe seem to turn a deaf ear to parents’ input about their children’s schooling, major reports have revealed heavy losses suffered by children nationwide as a result of school district pandemic policies over the last year and a half. […] The long-term consequences could last into children’s adulthoods — not just impacting their job prospects but even negatively impacting the U.S. economy, a report published by McKinsey & Company found. School shutdowns left K–12 students on average five months behind in mathematics and four months behind in reading by the end of the 2020-2021 school year, the analysis found. […] Historically disadvantaged students were hit hardest. In math, students in majority black schools ended the year with six months of unfinished learning, students in low-income schools with seven, the report found. High school students were more likely to drop out of school, and high school seniors, especially among low-income families, were less likely to attend postsecondary education, according to the report. Of the 16,000 parents McKinsey surveyed, 35% said they were very or extremely concerned about their children’s mental health.

Sand: The Kids Most Definitely Are Not All Right
In the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), or “nation’s report card,” test scores in both reading and math declined for 13-year-old students, the first drop registered in 50 years. The test showed that the decline was concentrated among the lowest performing students. Peggy Carr, commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, who has been working with these data for 28 years, was shocked to see the decline. “I had to ask the question again of my staff. Are you sure?’ I asked them to go back and check,” she said. It’s important to note that this test was given in early 2020, right before the pandemic-related shutdowns in the spring. At that point, then Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos granted a blanket, one-year “accountability waiver.” But in February 2021, with the Biden Administration in place, new Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said he’d “require states to administer the federally mandated tests in the spring, with an asterisk: They had the option of giving shorter, remote, or delayed versions.”
