[…] After he shot and killed 14-year Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt on January 6, 2021, Byrd had plenty of opportunity to save money. Documents obtained by Judicial Watch show that then Lieutenant Byrd and a pet stayed in a “Distinguished Visitor Suite” at the Presidential Inn at Andrews Air Force Base from July 8, 2021, through January 28, 2022. While living off the largess of the taxpayers, Byrd also collected $122,000 through a GoFundMe account. Defendants accused in the Capitol riot turned to Christian sites to raise money for legal fees. (12/11/2023 ) Sundance: 46 Deep State Officials Including Rosenstein, Clapper and Morell Urge Congress to Pass HPSCI Version of FISA-702 Renewal to Expand Domestic Surveillance

For those confused. There are two bills to modify the FISA702 reauthorization in the House. (1) HR 6611 from the House Intel Committee and (2) HR 6570 from the House Judiciary Committee. The intel committee bill expands domestic surveillance authority under the modifications; the judiciary committee bill requires the DOJ to get a search warrant before they can look at the incidental collection of American citizens. Both bills came out of committee and were scheduled for a floor vote tomorrow, which has been cancelled due to public outcry (good job). Speaker Mike Johnson initially planned to let both bills get voted.

Tomorrow and the bill with the most votes advances to the Senate. That’s a hot mess. […] It should not come as a surprise to see a panel of 46 experts in Deep State weaponization come out in support of the Intelligence Committee bill, and then decry the insufferable 702 limitations put into place in the Judiciary Committee bill. The bad guys want the House Intel version. […] Turner lied when he said his HR 6611 bill was supported by John Ratcliffe and Devin Nunes. It’s not, and they don’t. Both Nunes and Ratcliffe support a panel within the process who have eyes on everything that is being done and can conduct immediate oversight. Chairman Mike Turner is a big fibber, and y’all can tell him I said that. The Deep State folks love the Turner bill (6611) because it makes the surveillance even easier by granting even more authority in their warrantless searches. The Deep State folks do not like the Jordan bill (6570) because it requires a search warrant to look at the material, which means a predicate justification must exist. Both bills suck, but the Jordan bill sucks less.

Neither of the two bills to reauthorize and reform a powerful spy tool used by American intelligence agencies will be voted on this week after the Rules Committee pulled the legislation amid intense backlash. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who sits on the Rules Committee, confirmed to the Washington Examiner that neither the House Judiciary Committee nor Intelligence Committee bills to reauthorize and reform Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act would be voted on this week. The original plan was to put both bills on the floor and allow members to vote for them, and whichever one received the most votes would be the one the House advanced. But after a heated conference meeting where Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH), who sits on the Judiciary Committee and helped craft that version of the bill, accused Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH) of “f***ing lying” about the judiciary bill, the tides started to shift away from the “queen of the hill” scenario.

It’s the latest example of how new House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has continued the swampy ways of his predecessor. To be clear, the legislation, officially titled the “Lower Costs, More Transparency Act,” contains some provisions that will benefit consumers. Making prices more available will allow patients to shop around for better deals, hopefully leading prices within health care to moderate, if not decline outright. But as previously outlined in September, these provisions amount to lipstick on the proverbial pig. The measure contains various “health extenders” that House Republican “leaders” consider — wrongly — “must-pass” legislation. While those “leaders” are trying to sell the measure as a transparency bill, the engine driving this legislative train is its new spending — nearly $15 billion worth. To that end, the bill: . . .

DEI corrodes the moral foundations upon which our armed services were built and provides both the kindling and spark for igniting tribalism among our service members. Officers of all ranks who promulgate these destructive ideas must be immediately relieved of command because they actively endanger our nation’s security. The war in Gaza has been instructive because the response to it in the streets of Western cities and on college campuses has pulled back the rhetorical stage curtain and laid bare the moral rot at DEI’s core. […] Although quantitatively different, the moral reasoning used to rationalize the slaughter and rape of innocent Israelis is qualitatively the same as the moral calculus inherent to DEI. Morality is no longer measured against objective and immutable ideas of good and evil but is instead determined by where actions or ideas fall on a politically approved taxonomy of grievances. By design, DEI erases the bright line between right and wrong and makes everything a contextual shade of ideological gray. But history teaches those moral lines are important, especially in the military. […] Through DEI, the U.S. military promulgates, teaches, and ultimately enforces the idea people should be treated differently based on who their parents were or the color of their skin. The Department of Defense — as an official policy — implicitly recognizes the idea of guilt by blood. It is arrogant folly to believe these ideas can be contained within the services themselves and will not eventually seep into decisions and actions made by American forces in the field.

Hooper: Facing A Navy-Wide Sailor Shortage, USS Ford Sheds 500-600 Crew

In the face of a massive shortage of Navy sailors, America’s newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), has downsized, cutting the crew aboard by hundreds of sailors. The cuts appear to be deep and dramatic. Over the past six months to a year, some 500 to 600 sailors have left the USS Ford and not been replaced. In fact, the USS Ford has shed so many crew members that the ship’s company (core crew members that operate the vessel) is now below the Ford-class Carrier Program’s original Acquisition Program Baseline objective of 2,391 billets—a goal set back in 2004 that many observers considered unrealistic. […] Just one year ago, the carrier’s previous commander, Captain Paul Lanzilotta, led far larger crew of between 4,600 and 4,700 sailors […] To put things in perspective, the USS Ford has apparently shed almost enough sailors to staff two Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. And, according to a string of Navy statements over the past several months, the cuts didn’t happen after a long run of analysis and tests. Most of the cuts appear to be organic, occurring while the USS Ford was on an active deployment, as the carrier operates on the fringes of a major conflict.

The Children’s Defense Fund proudly boasts on its website that it is “unleashing the joy in growing up.” But as the American Life League (“ALL”) points out, “This organization promotes abortion and contraception, even to children, and has had a relationship with Planned Parenthood for decades.” This means that millions of children have had, and will have, that joy snuffed out before they even reach birth. The same Children’s Defense Fund website goes on to say, “We focus our advocacy on the whole child because we believe children don’t come in pieces.” This is incredibly ironic, as children in pieces is exactly what happens when an abortionist tears them apart during a dilation and evacuation abortion. Boyd: Report: U.S. Government Gave $1.89 Billion To Abortion Businesses Like Planned Parenthood

ederal law prohibits the use of taxpayer dollars to fund ending life in the womb, but a new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) says the federal government shelled out Americans’ hard-earned money to subsidize the domestic and global abortion industry. GAO initiated the 60-page report at the request of nearly 150 congressional Republicans led by Sen. Marsha Blackburn, Rep. Chris Smith, and Rep. Vicky Hartzler in January 2022. The agency’s previous report, spanning fiscal years 2016 to 2018, tracked nearly $2 billion in government spending directly to the pockets of several abortion activist groups.

The latest GAO report obtained by The Federalist that abortion organizations like Planned Parenthood, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), MSI Reproductive Choices, and at least four U.S. abortion facilities received a combined total of $1.89 billion through grants, agreements, loans, and programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance between 2019 and 2021.

The margin of error was 2.5 percent. A plurality of respondents, 42 percent, reported sympathizing more with the Israeli people than the Palestinian people, while 33 percent sympathized equally with both groups, and 12 percent sympathized more with Palestinians. Republicans were far more likely to sympathize more with the Israeli people than Democrats were.

According to reports, Hezbollah recently permitted the deployment of 400 Palestinians affiliated with Hamas along the border with Israel. The coordination between the two terror groups is taking place under the direct supervision of their masters in Iran….

Mittlestadt: Poll: One in five mail-in voters admit to committing voter fraud in 2020 election

The poll of 1,085 likely voters released on Tuesday, which was conducted from November 30 to December 6, asked, “During the 2020 election, did you fill out a ballot, in part or in full, on behalf of a friend or family member, such as a spouse or child?” A total of 21% of respondents who said they had cast mail-in ballots answered ‘yes.’ All states prohibit filling out a ballot for another person, but many states allow people to provide assistance with voting, The Heartland Institute noted. Furthermore, 17% of mail-in voters admitted they voted in a state where they “were no longer a permanent resident.” Seventeen percent also said they signed a “ballot or ballot envelope on behalf of a friend or family member.” […] More than 43% of voters in 2020 cast their ballots by mail, a historical record.

Arizona is a state with the unusual situation of bifurcated elections, in which residents who provide proof of U.S. citizenship can vote in all elections while the others may vote only in federal elections, resulting in ballots cast by voters who haven’t proven their U.S. citizenship. Arizona law requires residents registering to vote in the state to provide proof of U.S. citizenship. However, after the Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that Arizona must accept U.S. voter registration forms because of federal requirements under the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, the state allows residents registering to vote who don’t provide proof of citizenship to receive ballots for federal races only. Federal voter registration forms require those filling them out only to sign a sworn declaration that they are U.S. citizens.

Police tried to stop the gathering, but it sparked a chase with one car that ended in an officer firing shots and two cops hurt. ‘It’s unwanted by the community and it’s a very dangerous activity,’ Indianapolis police Northwest District Commander Lorenzo Lewis said about the rise in takeovers. Videos released by police from the incident showed the massive size and the dangerous stunts by drivers – many times as people hung out of windows or women twerked as cars did doughnuts. Smoke could be seen billowing around the tires as cars screech along the road.

The survey, by The Economist and YouGov., included 1,500 people ranging in age from 18 to over 65 years old who were asked a series of questions about the massacre of six million Jews. Approximately 20 percent of people aged 18 to 29 agreed with the statement ‘the Holocaust is a myth’ and even more believed the death toll has been exaggerated. The results are being linked to data that showed 32 percent of this age group gets their news from TikTok, where misinformation and antisemitism have persisted for years – the platform previously launched campaigns to combat issues. The poll comes amid concerns universities have become breeding grounds for anti-Semitism, which has led Congress to launch an investigation into Harvard University, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania following their presidents’ failure to condemn students calling for a Jewish genocide.

A nearly six-month standoff between the Universities of Wisconsin and the Republican-led state Legislature over diversity, equity and inclusion spending seemed poised to end Saturday morning. Hemingway: The Federalist Notable Books Of 2023

It’s time once more for the annual Federalist notable-books-of-the-year column. Federalist writers, as well as those in the publication’s large and growing orbit, take stock of the books we read this year. Unlike other annual lists, this is not necessarily a list of books that came out this year, just the ones that Federalist writers happened to read in 2023 and found worthy of recommending. David Harsanyi Capitalism is taking a beating from both left and right these days. Swedish writer Johan Norberg’s The Capitalist Manifesto is an excellent corrective. Though the book doesn’t exactly plow new ground, it offers a clear-eyed, updated argument for the moral and material benefits of a free-market system. Lots of people should be reading this book. An author who’s spent decades offering readers clarity is Thomas Sowell. Social Justice Fallacies, his slim new book, dismantles the trendy but dangerous identitarian arguments of the modern left. In some sense, it’s a companion to his classic The Quest for Cosmic Justice. […] Joy Pullmann War On The American Republic: How Liberalism Became Despotism isn’t a book for normies. This deeply researched, 456-page history of American leftism by Hillsdale politics professor Kevin Slack helps explain how America “decline[d] from a republic to a despotic kleptocracy” (3) across the last century. It’s a heavily scholarly work bookended by polemic opening and closing chapters, revealing the author’s impressive ability to read great gobs of historical documents and recall their minute details. His ponderous academic ability shines through on every page. Especially interesting to me were the pivot points between what Slack calls the three phases of American leftism: progressivism, liberalism, and radicalism. Leftists kept getting their philosophy shattered by massive events like World War I, World War II, and Vietnam, but responded by doubling down instead of changing course. In other words, leftism has become tyranny by repeatedly refusing to acknowledge its core ideas are false.

Pullmann: Cedric, the Rescue Dog (Ages 10 – Adult)

This novella dramatizes the true story of a British coastal rescue dog, Cedric, one of the famous dog heroes of history. The New Foundland rescued 23 people amid treacherous storms, becoming a Victorian legend.

The author is an American painter who has spent his life painting America and teaching 60,000 children art. One of those children was me. Barry Stebbing was the first person to very strongly encourage me to write, which set off the chain of events resulting in me becoming a professional writer and editor.

He is a profound artist, so this book also contains skillful artwork and illustrations, something I always treasure in books. So many children’s books have terrible art, which seems yet another unfairness to inflict on the young. I recommend Cedric for ages 10 and up, if the 10-year-old is a good reader and likes animals. My 8-year-old will certainly try it, but he’ll need to reread it later in life. For less practiced readers, I’d say 12 and up. The product page contains a sample chapter.
