AMERICAN HISTORY 101: PATROTS’ DAY, APRIL 19, 1775

The sun never set on the British Empire. It was the largest empire in world history. Out of nearly 200 countries in the world, only 22 were never controlled, invaded or attacked by Britain. In April of 1775, the British Royal Military Governor of Massachusetts, General Thomas Gage, sent 800 British Army Regulars, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith, on a preemptive raid to seize guns from American patriots at Lexington and Concord. George Mason of Virginia stated: “To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them.”

A warning was sent from Boston’s Old North Church that the British were coming, as recounted in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride”: . . . […] On April 19th, “Patriots’ Day,” the British continued their march to Lexington and Concord intent on seizing arms and arresting Tea Party leader Samuel Adams and Massachusetts Provincial Congress president John Hancock.

Lowery: The Shot Heard Round the World

The study of history gives perspective on our present world. Consider the events leading to the American Revolution. In 1763, after decades of on again, off again war, British forces decisively defeated the French to conclude the Seven Years War, leaving them a virtually invincible empire, with the strongest navy, the largest merchant fleet, and the fastest-growing economy in the world. However, during the later 1760s and early 1770s, relations between Great Britain and her American colonies grew steadily worse. The Stamp Act of 1765, the occupation of Boston in 1768, the Boston Massacre of 1770, and the Tea Party of 1773, had enflamed passions on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1774, Parliament, with King George III’s consent, passed the Massachusetts Government Act of Great Britain, transferring most of the powers of the colony’s elected government to the royal governor, General Thomas Gage. Fearing the outbreak of violence, Gage began to confiscate military supplies, principally gunpowder, from the militia. By April 1775, the provincials had for some time been hiding weapons and powder at various locations, including the town of Concord, some twenty miles west of Boston. On the 18th of April, Gage dispatched about 700 infantry, all British regulars under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith, to seize the munitions there. Despite the general’s attempts to maintain secrecy, Paul Revere and others brought news of the raid to Lexington shortly after midnight.

Schussler: Renewable Experts: Undeterred and Unmoved by Failed Ideas

“Green” ideas and their proponents can create problems. Like the antagonist in Terminator 2, green arguments and proponents don’t go down easily. With serious challenges, they retreat, hibernate sometimes, morph, transform and come back. It’s hard to argue with many “green” energy ideas. They are often huge in scope but severely limited in details. Focusing on a couple key factors and ignoring or leaving so much to be worked out later. Painfully naïve or unaware of so many factors associated with the provision of energy, feedback and often even human behavior. They see the flaws in current efforts, but are blind to the drawbacks which will necessarily emerge from their proposals. The offer conjectures with a lot of dots to still be connected. They speak of things that may be possible, without any handle on the probabilities. Usually, “green” ideas are packaged with threats of doom, promises of superior technology or both. The media are drawn to both those themes and many policy makers are attracted as well. Attention is a great thing for new ideas. The themes of urgency and the scope of change, gives these ideas more weight and seeming gravitas. Unfortunately, the needed incentives to dig down and look critically as these ideas are generally lacking. Woefully, those promulgating “green” ideas don’t have much incentive for engaging with their critics or broadening their understandings. They generate the feeling that we need to move forward with the big, new important thing – no time for distractions.

The House Judiciary Committee held a raucous hearing in the Big Apple on Monday to discuss New York City’s rising crime problem. Republicans sought to highlight the poor performance of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is refusing to prosecute various crimes as he instead pursues a criminal case against Donald Trump, and leaving a tide of victims in his wake. It’s fine, and perhaps politically shrewd, for the GOP to shine a light on crime-enabling local prosecutors jeopardizing the safety of their cities in exchange for partisan witch-hunts. But for the next hearing, congressional Republicans need only walk a few blocks from their House offices to the office of Matthew Graves, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. Graves, the Biden campaign advisor who was appointed in 2021 to head what is arguably the most powerful U.S. Attorney’s office in the country, is accelerating the selective prosecution of Trump supporters for any involvement in the events of January 6 while at the same time declining to prosecute dangerous criminals in Washington, D.C. as the city descends into violent chaos. And unlike with Bragg, oversight of Graves is directly under the purview of Congress.

The wife of Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia may have violated an ethics pledge she made before taking her spot heading a federal economic development board, according to Fox News. Gayle Manchin aided an Appalachia-focused nonprofit in applying for and receiving $62.8 million in federal grant money, some of which was later dispersed to an organization led by Jack Rossi, Sen. Manchin’s longtime campaign treasurer. Gayle heads a federal board that oversees Appalachia development, and her consulting on the grant process may be a violation of an ethics pledge she made before joining the board, according to Fox News.

How did a Swiss billionaire who has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to left-leaning American nonprofit political advocacy groups become a topic of debate over an elections bill on the floor of the Minnesota House of Representatives? Republican legislators allege that Hansjörg Wyss, a former medical device industry executive turned political activist, has his fingerprints on a provision included in a sweeping elections reform bill the DFL House majority passed on a party-line vote late Thursday night. The provision in question — included in a potpourri list of election reforms in HF3 — would prohibit certain types of political activity by foreign-influenced corporations. But it wouldn’t restrict similar activity by foreign-influenced nonprofit organizations, such as Washington, D.C.-based Center for American Progress, of which Wyss is a donor and board member. […] “This legislation is literally — by its own term — foreign-influenced legislation,” said Niska. “It’s like the snake eating its own tail … while [this provision] chooses to disable for-profit corporations, it chooses not to regulate certain other entities.”

Increasingly, Chinese nationals are using American surrogates to bear their children. Thanks to in vitro fertilization, they don’t even need to leave China. The practice arises from differences in Chinese and American laws and may be driven by both the desire to become parents and the desire for U.S. citizenship. But there is a national security risk involved too. Washington has no idea who these children or their parents are.

James: FBI arrest two Chinese operatives for running illegal police station in Manhattan to ‘spy on and harass dissidents’ as DOJ announces charges on 44 others in major crackdown on espionage on US soil

US attorney for the Eastern District of New York confirmed that two men have been arrested in connection with the station in New York City’s Chinatown neighborhood. Lu Jianwang, 61, of the Bronx, and Chen Jinping, 59, of Manhattan, were both arrested on Monday morning at their addresses in New York.

They have been charged with conspiring to act as agents for the Chinese government, and are expected to appear in federal court in Brooklyn. More than a dozen Chinese nationals have been charged by federal prosecutors with waging a campaign of surveillance and harassment against dissidents living in the States. […] Acting Assistant Director Kurt Ronnow, of the Counterintelligence Division, said in a press conference on Monday: ‘It is simply outrageous that China’s Ministry of Public Security thinks it can get away with establishing a secret, illegal police station on U.S. soil to aid its efforts to export repression and subvert our rule of law.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock just concluded a two-day trip to Beijing to meet with her Chinese counterparts, including Wang Yi, China’s highest-ranking diplomat. I’m not sure whether Yi’s analysis of the meeting is delusional or just an attempt at building more international support for China’s position, but he somehow came away saying that he “hopes and believes” that Germany will support the “reunification” of Taiwan with the mainland. This was a particularly curious position to take since there is almost nobody in Europe that is taking China’s side in this mess except for Emmanuel Macron, and even his own legislature is throwing cold water on the idea.

Here’s a story that hasn’t drawn nearly enough attention yet. A new change being driven by the Biden administration’s Federal Housing Authority will cause new fees and increased interest rates for home mortgages. Starting on May 1st, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will offer discounted mortgage rates to prospective home buyers with “riskier credit backgrounds” (meaning people with poor credit ratings) to enable them to qualify for a mortgage. But that will generate more losses in the system and that money will have to be made up somehow. So people holding lower-cost mortgages because they have a good credit rating will be charged more, leading to their monthly mortgage payments going up. I suppose this is the latest front in the battle for “equity.” (NY Post)

Thirteen days later, on April 9 (Easter Sunday), a Portland, Oregon, cab driver named Reese McDowell Lawhon was stabbed to death in the neck by a passenger who had stepped into his cab wearing a tiara. […] Ngo also discovered that Lopez, age 30, identifies as a transgender woman. […] These aren’t isolated cases. A sampling: in September 2018, a man named Snochia Moseley, who was taking female hormones at the time, took four lives in Aberdeen, Maryland. Likewise, Devon Erickson was undergoing a transition from male to female when he and an accomplice killed one student and injured eight at a school near Denver in May 2019. Anderson Lee Aldrich, who last November killed five people and injured 25 at a Colorado Springs nightclub, Club Q, identifies as non-binary. Douglas Perry, a.k.a. Donna Perry, killed three women in Washington State before undergoing “gender-reassignment” surgery in 2000. Brooklyn octogenarian Harvey Marcelin was already a double murderer under his birth name when, last year, now identifying as a trans woman, he took a third victim. In Scotland, Daniel Eastwood strangled a man to death before transitioning in 2017; he now identifies not as a woman but (no kidding) as a baby. This past Sunday, the Epoch Times reported on a Ashlee Renczkowski, a middle-school teacher in Florida who’s undergoing a male-to-female transition and who’d spoken about “shooting students” and then committing suicide.

In 2023, California is spending twice as much per resident (in today’s dollars) as the government did in 2010. Florida and New York currently have very similar population levels, yet New York state spends twice as much as the Florida state government. The issue recently erupted as eight states joined in a pact to establish a wealth tax. The eight states – New York, California, Washington, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, and Minnesota – offer varying plans, but the idea of the pact is to stop people from shifting their assets from one state to another. Seven of these states are already in the top eleven for tax burden – the exception being Washington. Four of the states are among the top for losing population.

In establishing the FLWR Shop in Belle Meade, Tenn., they announced that they intended to be “the very best flower shop, not just in Nashville, but well, ever!” It appears, however, that that their “passion for unique and elegant flowers” does not extend to Republicans. The owners are at the center of a national controversy after refusing to provide decorations for a GOP event featuring former President Donald Trump, former Vice President Michael Pence, and other Republicans. They further urged other businesses to deny future services to the Republican Party over gun control. Some liberals are ecstatic and heaped praise on the shop. For many, however, this is a rather incongruous arrangement. Many liberal pundits oppose religious businesses like bakeries in refusing to serve same-sex weddings and oppose the Supreme Court’s recognition of free speech rights for businesses generally. Indeed, if liberals now favor such denials of service for political or religious reasons, they are going to love what is coming in a case called 303 Creative v. Elenis.

Haynes: Over 50,000 Nigerian Christians have been killed for their faith since 2009: report

In a report issued by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) on April 10, the plight of Nigerian Christians for over a decade is highlighted. Intersociety, based in Eastern Nigeria, dedicated the report to the “1,041 slain and disappeared victims” of Muslim terrorist groups who had carried out attacks in the first 100 days of 2023. Summarizing their findings, Intersociety wrote that “since [the] 2009 Islamic uprising[,] 52,250 Christians and 34,000 moderate Muslims have been butchered or hacked to death.” These attacks and murders are being performed not only by terrorist groups, but also by state supporters groups, including the Nigerian army. The report noted that such attacks had become increasingly regular in recent years, with current president Muhammadu Buhari’s regime of “radical Islamism” having killed 30,250 Christians since 2015, and of having attacked 18,000 churches and 2,200 Christian schools.
