Are these chatbots conscious? Are they just pretending to be conscious? Are they possessed? These are reasonable questions. They also highlight one of our strongest cognitive biases. Chatbots are designed to trigger anthropomorphism. Except for a few neuro-divergent types, our brains are wired to perceive these bots as people. With the right stimulus, we’re like the little boy who’s certain his teddy bear gets lonesome, or that the shadows have eyes. Tech companies are well aware of this and use it to their advantage. In my view, the most important issue is what these machines are doing to us. […] Given the right prompts, chatbots will say the darnedest things. The Supreme Court released three opinions Wednesday in cases argued earlier this term, in which each case saw the three-member liberal minority joining the majority opinion in each decision. Justice Amy Coney Barrett, one of six Republican-appointed justices on the conservative-majority court, authored a 9-0 unanimous decision in a bankruptcy case known as Bartenwerfer v. Buckley. The decision was followed by a 6-3 opinion authored by liberal Justice Elena Kagan in a labor dispute known as Helix Energy Solutions Group v. Hewitt, followed by a 5-4 decision by liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor favoring a death row inmate in Cruz v. Arizona.

Natalia Harrell is being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. And she is pregnant. Now lawyers are arguing — before Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal — that the fetus’s incarceration is a violation of his rights guaranteed by the U.S. and Florida constitutions. […] This is an interesting case. On the one hand, I don’t want to see yet another violent criminal released. (And you know, or at least strongly suspect, that Harrell and her lawyer[s] are more concerned about springing her than they are about her baby.) On the other hand, what a powerful statement it would be! An affirmation that an unborn child has rights like any other innocent human being. “Pro-choice” activists, who are also usually feminists and believe in criminal justice reform, would be thrust into an awkward position: that of essentially having to say, “Keep the woman and her non-viable tissue mass in prison!” Delicious. If justice were to prevail, perhaps a C-section could be performed, Harrell could continue to serve her time…and the baby could be given to loving foster parents.

Promising absolute protection entitled the Bush administration to all the power that it claimed to need. […] Similarly, after the start of the Covid lockdowns, policymakers entitled themselves to all the power they claimed to need to compel compliance. […] When Obama campaigned for the presidency in 2008, entitling the president to kill Americans without trial wasn’t one of the reforms he promised. The Obama administration promised to be very careful about who it killed. But Daniel Hale, a former Air Force intelligence analyst, leaked information revealing that nearly 90 percent of people killed in drone strikes were not the intended targets. Biden’s Justice Department is rewarding Hale with a long prison sentence.

Some Democrat states like Washington and California now have set due dates beyond which you will not be allowed to purchase a car of your choice. An Indiana abortion doctor received backlash after posting a tweet praising abortion that featured a picture of her posing with an instrument used in surgical procedures. Dr. Katie McHugh, a self-described “queer OB/GYN,” posted a tweet Friday in which she called abortion “common,” “moral,” and a “family value.” As part of the post, McHugh included a picture of her posing with a cannula, an instrument used in surgical abortions to suck a baby from its mother’s womb. “Happy Friday! #Abortion care is still legal in Indiana,” McHugh tweeted Friday. “We’re doing everything we can to keep it that way.” […] McHugh faced largely negative backlash as a result of the post, including negative responses from those in favor of abortion.

The oldest senior military college in the US has found itself embroiled in a very modern form of cultural warfare, after a group of alumni organized a campaign furiously protesting the school’s recent diversity push. The controversy at the Virginia Military Institute has been simmering since October 2020, when then-Governor Ralph Northam ordered a probe into reports of widespread racism at the institution, and the school’s board voted to remove a Confederate statue on campus. In a twist of fate, the two sides in the VMI culture war are led by ‘brother rats’, as VMI classmates are known, who both graduated from the college in 1985, according to a Washington Post report on Tuesday. The belligerents are retired Army Major General Cedric T. Wins, 59, who is VMI’s first black superintendent, and Matt Daniel, 60, a white former Marine who founded a PAC dubbed ‘Spirit of VMI’ that has launched ads and lobbying efforts opposing Wins’ diversity push. […] But as Wins has overseen reforms such as the removal of Confederate emblems from campus, and hired consultants on diversity, equity and inclusion to advise the college, he has faced the wrath of Daniel’s Spirit of VMI PAC.

Why is it that we can’t go more than a week without another Biden administration embarrassment? On Tuesday, a top U.S. defense official verified to Fox News that a Department of Defense email server was left exposed for two weeks and that, as a result, internal emails were accessible without a password.

The exposed server was allegedly the result of a misconfiguration. Anyone who knew what the server’s IP address was could access the emails with a web browser. “The server contained around three terabytes of military emails, with many related to the U.S. Special Operations Command, which is a military unit which conducts special operations,” Fox News reports. The emails on the server went back several years and contained personal information.

The sheriff’s report on the disturbing scene where a top Bill Clinton advisor with ties to Jeffrey Epstein was found shot and hanged from a tree has finally been released, prompting sleuths to question why the death was ruled a suicide. Mark Middleton, 59, was a special advisor to the former president in the 1990s, authorizing Epstein’s visits to the White House seven out of the 17 times the infamous pedophile met with top government officials there. Additionally, he was also on the flight logs of Epstein’s private jet. According to the Perry County sheriff’s office, Middleton was found dead on May 7, 2022 with a gunshot wound to his chest and an extension cord tying his neck to a tree in Perryville, Arkansas. […] “I could see that he had a gunshot wound to the chest and that he had a knot tied in an extension cord that was around his neck and it was attached to the limb directly above him,” Lawson added. Ammunition and a gun case were found in Middleton’s vehicle — but the weapon itself never turned up. Despite the confusing details of the case, Sheriff Scott Montgomery said Middleton had apparently shot himself in the chest with a shotgun and also somehow hung himself, reported the Arkansas Times. Uniyal: Israel Passes Law to Strip Terrorists of Citizenship

The Israeli parliament on Wednesday passed a law to strip terrorists of their citizenship for receiving financial rewards from the Palestinian Authority. The new legislation, which received 94 votes in a 120-member Knesset, also gives the Israeli government the power to deport terrorists to the Palestinian Authority-controlled West Bank, as well as bar their reentry into Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government presented the bill after Israeli Arabs gave a “hero’s welcome” to a terrorist who was released after serving a 40-year prison sentence for kidnapping and murdering an Israeli soldier in 1983. Karim Younis, an unrepentant terrorist, “was greeted by family, friends and supporters chanting and carrying him through the streets on their shoulders,” the Jerusalem Post reported January 5.
