“Electrification” is the newest green buzzword. According to its proponents, by 2050, all vehicles, furnaces, water heaters, and even cooking stoves will be powered by electricity generated from wind and solar. On December 14, the White House held an “Electrification Summit” to explore “how electrification can help the United States meet its climate and equity goals.” The invited speakers represented a range of green-subsidy causes—automobile manufacturers, electric utilities, labor unions, regulators, and even teachers’ unions. At the same time, climate activists are putting more emphasis on “degrowth,” which, they claim, is the only way to prevent greenhouse gases from causing the earth’s immolation. Electrification and degrowth are actually complementary strategies. The degrowth movement is a Malthusian concept, popularized in 1972 by the Club of Rome publication, The Limits to Growth, which forecast that the world would run out of resources because of exponential population growth. The claims of impending doom, advanced by Paul Ehrlich in The Population Bomb, never materialized. Today, the world is wealthier and far cleaner than it was 50 years ago. For degrowth proponents, the improvement in global living standards is nothing to celebrate. Eight of the ten claims made by Arizona gubernatorial Kari Lake were dismissed by the state judge. The claims dismissed were for violations of freedom of speech, invalid signatures on mail-in ballots, equal protection, due process, secrecy clause, incorrect certification, inadequate remedy, and constitutional rights claims. However, two claims were approved for trial, fraudulent tabulator configurations and violations pertaining to chain of custody for ballots. Mrs. Lake faces a steep hill to climb as the election results were certified as accurate and correct by county and state officials. Lake will have to prove any tabulation errors or ballot custody issues were the result of intentional wrongdoing by Maricopa County officials. An example cited by many Chinese applicants is the wholesale rewriting of history textbooks to delete any references to events that cannot be red-washed (my word) to fit a “Century of Humiliation” narrative. I was repeatedly told that the average Chinese person is now exposed to no other historical perspective. What shocked me more were the accompanying reports of relatives, friends or acquaintances having their passports clipped upon returning to China from foreign trips – without any reason given by the Chinese border authority. Nothing better illustrates the utter ineptitude of the Biden administration’s dealings with the Middle East than Saudi Arabia’s decision to forge a strategic alliance with China. Biden set the tone for his strained relationship with the Saudi royal family during the 2020 presidential election contest when he denounced the kingdom as a “pariah” state over its involvement in the murder of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul in 2018, although there has never any audible distress from the Biden administration over Iran’s 2007 abduction and presumed death of ex-FBI agent Robert Levinson. By any standard, the deepening military cooperation between Russia and Iran should serve as a wake-up call to the Biden administration to redouble its efforts to reaffirm its commitment to key allies in the region such as the Saudis, who are committed to resisting any attempt by Tehran to expand its malign influence in the region.

Members of the LGBT-community are now often eligible for the same sort of hiring, promotion, supplier diversity, and other preferences once available only to women, nonwhites, the disabled, and veterans. The trend is visible on the HR pages of corporations and governmental institutions, at increasingly well-attended LGBT job fairs and summits, and in job listings on mainstream and gay job websites. The Mayo Clinic, for example, “strongly encourages” job applications from gay housekeeping assistants, gay orthopedic hand surgeons, gay transplant pulmonologists, and gay door attendants, among many other jobs seemingly unrelated to sexual orientation. Overtly liberal employers—the ACLU, for example—are more specific in encouraging or discouraging various tribes in their ads. A recent ad for a receptionist job appealed to “Black people, Indigenous people, people of color; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex people; women; people with disabilities, protected veterans, and formerly incarcerated individuals”—all “strongly encouraged to apply.” The March for Our Lives includes most of the usual groups (except veterans) in its job-vacancy statement but also throws “young people” into the mix.
