So what’s the attraction for governments and bankers so eager to go digital?

Well, for bankers, the answer is that they’ll have the opportunity to phase out bank notes. Most activities on the retail floor will be outmoded. Since all transactions would be digital, they’ll all be performed by bank clerks on computers, without ever having to face customers. Additionally, depositors will no longer be able to store currency elsewhere. Depositors will be at the mercy of the banks, as they’ll no longer be able to make even the smallest transaction without passing it through the bank. This not only makes it possible for banks to raise their transaction fees at will, but it also gives banks the ability to decide what transactions the depositor is allowed to make, as the depositor may no longer have any alternative transaction capability. […] And, while we’re at it, what will the benefits to governments be? Well, governments will not only have greater power over the movement of currency, without the cost of producing bank notes, but they’ll also have the ability to require banks to reveal all transactional information on depositors. At the very least, this will mean the ability to eliminate voluntary income tax, as taxation will now be possible by direct debit. It also will not need to be annual but could be carried out monthly, with each bank statement. And rates subject to frequent, unannounced change. On Monday the Supreme Court left in place a ruling that allows the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to issue mask mandates on planes, trains and other forms of transport, as it had for more than a year during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Supreme Court denied a California attorney’s request to overturn a U.S. Court of Appeals ruling in the D.C. Circuit from December, which found no merit in his claim and affirmed that the TSA does have the authority to maintain security and safety within the transportation system, including imposing the masking requirement. […] The mask mandate had been a bone of contention between the government and airlines.[…] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend that people wear masks in indoor public transportation settings such as airports.

Olander: Judge restricts Arizona ballot watchers

Per the order, members and associates of the group Clean Elections USA have been barred from coming within 75 feet of a ballot drop box or a building housing a drop box; speaking or yelling at people within 75 feet of the drop box (unless yelled at first); or open-carrying firearms or wearing body armor within 250 feet of drop boxes. Some individuals also must post messages on their Truth Social pages correcting past statements, which suggested it’s always illegal to drop off multiple ballots. The judge ordered them to post: “It is not always illegal to deposit multiple ballots in a ballot drop box. It is legal to deposit the ballot of a family member, household member or person for whom you are the caregiver.”

Introduced Friday by Representative Nikema Williams (D-Ga.), a former Planned Parenthood official, and cosponsored by four other Democrats, the bill would establish the position of Ombuds for Reproductive and Sexual Health. The Ombuds (ombudsman, an actual word, would be sexist) would report directly to the Secretary of HHS. The qualifications for the position make it quite clear that the Ombuds is not merely to be an impartial disseminator of information but an advocate for all manner of perversion. […] As a corollary to this function, the Ombuds is also charged with “collect[ing] information regarding, and … address[ing], reproductive and sexual health misinformation being disseminated to the public.” That, according to the bill, “includes any information relating to reproductive and sexual health that is not evidence based or medically accurate, including inaccuracy in the provision of any related services.”

If nothing else is certain as Americans continue to cope with the most disruptive event in the last half-century, one fact is indisputable: As the number of cases of COVID-19 decreased over the past few months, they now account for less than half of this persistently elevated death rate. In the six years before the COVID era, deaths in the United States averaged between 2.6 million and 2.8 million people per year. These averages are adjusted for population growth, and with a population as large as that of the United States, the numbers should be, and are, remarkably stable. During the three years immediately preceding 2020, for example, the population growth-adjusted death rate from all causes varied by only 1.5 percent. None of that is true today. The increase in total deaths—deaths from all causes, not just COVID deaths—is up significantly. In the nine months in 2020 from April to December, a normal death count would have been 2.04 million. Instead, during that period, 2.57 million people died, 26 percent above normal. […] Breaking this down to numbers reveals the following percentages of unexplained excess deaths. The energy crisis is worsening. The U.S. has fewer than 30 days of diesel and other distillate fuels, the lowest level since 1945. Supplies are so low that there will be shortages and price spikes within six months unless the U.S. enters recession, experts warn. In response, the Biden administration is releasing more oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. But the reserves are of crude oil, not refined oil products such as diesel. And the releases are stifling investment in future oil production. “People are depleting their emergency stocks,” warned Saudi Arabia’s energy minister earlier this week. “Losing emergency stocks may become painful in the months to come.” In response, influential Democrats, including a leading U.S. Senate candidate, a former Department of Energy official, and an influential energy expert, are urging the U.S. government to socialize America’s oil and gas firms. At a Houston conference last week, Jason Bordoff, Dean of Columbia University’s Climate School, called for the “nationalization” of oil and gas companies. “Government must take an active role in owning assets that will become stranded,” he said, “and plan to strand those assets.” By “strand” Bordoff meant “make financially worthless.” Bordoff made the point at least twice during the confrerence.
