Pfizer Inc. and partner BioNTech SE completed an application to the Food and Drug Administration to authorize emergency use of its three-dose COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months to under the age of 5, according to multiple reports. “Pfizer and BioNTech completed a rolling application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization (EUA) of the 3-µg [microgram] dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months through 4 years of age on June 1, 2022,” the company said in release. […] “We recognize parents are anxious to have their young children vaccinated against COVID-19, and while the FDA cannot predict how long its evaluation of the data and information will take, we will review any EUA request we receive as quickly as possible using a science-based approach,” the FDA said.

An order from Justice Samuel Alito paused a lower-court ruling in a lawsuit over a disputed 2021 local court election that would have allowed the counting of mail-in ballots that lacked a handwritten date. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia had ruled that the state election law’s requirement of a date next to the voter’s signature on the outside of return envelopes was “immaterial.” Based on that ruling, the state had advised counties to count those ballots in the race between McCormick and Oz.

Hammer: Hunt down the Supreme Court leaker

What’s taking law enforcement so long? It’s been almost a month since Politico scooped its bombshell leak, an unprecedented revelation of a draft majority opinion in a still-pending Supreme Court case. That leaked draft opinion, penned by the stalwart Justice Samuel Alito in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, would finally overturn 1973’s infamous Roe v. Wade abortion decision. Alito’s draft opinion does not go far enough, at least as far as the proper pro-life end goal is concerned, but it is a praiseworthy development and an admirable start toward an abortion-free America.

While Democrats and the corporate press immediately focused on the likely impending de-constitutionalization of the Left’s favorite concocted constitutional “right,” abortion, perhaps just as important was — and still is — the fact that this debilitating leak happened in the first place. If the once-sacrosanct idea of the Supreme Court as a legal, and not a political, institution is to mean anything at all, then the Court cannot be subjected to the Bismarckian “sausage-making” process that afflicts the political branches, including leaks and external lobbying campaigns.

An otherwise nihilist progressive and media agenda would reawaken solely to destroy Donald Trump—not his policies against which the Left has offered nothing of substance. Sullum: Bipartisan Support for Red Flag Laws Elides the Practical and Constitutional Issues They Raise

The House of Representatives plans to vote on a bill that would authorize federal courts to issue “red flag” orders prohibiting people from possessing firearms when they are deemed a threat to themselves or others. Meanwhile, legislation encouraging states to pass and enforce their own red flag laws has emerged as a possible point of compromise between Senate Democrats who favor new gun restrictions and Senate Republicans who are skeptical of that approach. It is not hard to understand the bipartisan appeal of this policy, which promises to target dangerous individuals rather than impose broad limits that affect millions of law-abiding Americans. But there are two basic problems with red flag laws that cannot be wished away by consensus-building rhetoric: Predicting violence is much harder than advocates of this approach are usually willing to admit, and trying to overcome that challenge by erring on the side of issuing red flag orders inevitably means that many innocent people will lose their Second Amendment rights, typically for a year and sometimes longer, even though they never would have used a gun to harm anyone. In short, minimizing false negatives means maximizing false positives.

Politicians have long admitted that a crisis is an opportunity not to be missed — the greater the tragedy, the greater the opportunity. After the mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket, New York’s Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) called for censorship to “silence the voices of hatred and racism.” After the Uvalde massacre, some Democrats renewed calls for everything from court packing to ending the Senate filibuster. The most immediate response, however, was a call for gun bans. Vice President Kamala Harris got out front of the White House by demanding a ban on AR-15s, the most popular weapon in America. Then President Joe Biden created a stir by suggesting he might seek to ban 9mm weapons. Such calls are not limited to the United States. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his government is introducing legislation to “implement a national freeze on handgun ownership.” He said Canadians would no longer be able “to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada,” adding that “there is no reason anyone in Canada should need guns in their everyday lives.” The difference between the push in the two countries is the existence of the Second Amendment in the United States — a constitutionally mandated “reason” why Americans are allowed to have guns; they don’t have to prove it to the government.

Wilson: Pelosi says House will consider assault weapons ban legislation

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said next week she will bring forward legislation to ban military-style assault weapons, as the chamber moves to address gun violence. She said “we will be having a hearing and marking up the assault weapon ban” as soon as the House addresses several pieces of legislation, including the package the House Judiciary Committee will mark up on Thursday. Speaking at a rally against gun violence in San Francisco, Pelosi said, “We just are trying to hit it in every possible way,” to try and curb mass shootings across the country. […] The House is also expected to take up a bill by Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath of Georgia, whose son was shot and killed in 2012, which would allow family members and law enforcement to obtain an extreme risk protection order, which temporarily removes access to firearms for those who are deemed a danger to themselves or to others, as well as an Amber Alert-style notification system for when active shootings happen. […] As part of the package of potential changes, senators are looking at strengthening state laws allowing authorities to take away weapons from individuals deemed a risk, known as red flag laws. Leading that part of the discussions are Sens. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, and Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican.

The minority leader also endorsed Smith for reelection earlier this year and is said to be working hand-in-glove with allies of former New Jersey governor and prospective 2024 Trump challenger Chris Christie to protect Smith from the full power of Trump’s endorsement of any primary opponent.

Grocery store and supermarket purchases rose 10.8% year over year in April. The USDA’s forecast for May predicts the cost of food will increase again and significantly by fall. All of the crises the Biden administration created are converging and could cause food insecurity for the first time in the living memories of many Americans. Biden’s “Not in My Backyard” energy policy halted domestic fossil fuel production while he still begs some of the worst regimes in the world to drill more oil. That leads to higher fuel costs with or without Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. And higher fuel costs impact farm operations and all forms of transportation.

In California, the California Political Review reports, demolition of four dams will soon begin, “with no replacement for the water and energy they provide.” Compounding this blunder, in two years the state’s last nuclear power plant, which provides 10% of the state’s energy, will be shut down without any plans to replace that loss. And even worse, the Democrats who run the state are sticking with plans to banish gas-powered vehicles from the state by 2035, replacing them with 8 million electric vehicles in a state already incapable of keeping the lights on in hot weather or during wildfires that damage transmission lines. According to one study, achieving this goal of 30 million EVs would require electric power companies with 2-3 million customers to invest between $1700 and $5800 in grid upgrades per vehicle, costs that will no doubt be passed along to customers. Adding insult to injury, rather than spending the state’s surplus revenue and remaining covid swag from the feds on preparing for this summer’s looming blackouts and water shortages, Gov. Newsome has proposed an $18.1 billion “Inflation Relief Package,” a grab-bag of giveaways including up to $800 in cash to registered vehicle owners, free public transit, and subsidies for child care. Needless to say, this new infusion of cash into the economy will do nothing to lower inflation, and in fact will make it worse.

Bond: California Task Force Releases First-Of-Its-Kind Interim Reparations Report

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) signed a bill establishing the task force in 2020. In March, the task force decided that only direct descendants of slaves would get financial reparations, which was controversial at the time. The final report will be released before July 1 of next year. The report made the claim that “[h]istorians have argued that many of today’s financial accounting and management practices began among enslavers in the U .S . South and the Caribbean.” […] While some parts of the recommendations were specific, others were generalized approaches to reparations. For example, the group recommended that “forms of expression, acknowledgment, and remembrance of the trauma of state-sanctioned white supremacist terror” be created, potentially involving memorials, and providing funds for “a long-term truth and reconciliation commission.” […] The group also wants to set up a cabinet-level secretary role for a California African American/Freedmen Affairs Agency, given the job of carrying out the task force’s recommendations, among other responsibilities.

Thompson: California bid to create legal drug injection sites advances

California moved a step closer Wednesday to creating sites where people could legally use drugs under supervision designed to save them from dying if they overdose, over the objections of opponents who said the state would be enabling dangerous and illegal activity. The full Assembly will now consider allowing test programs in Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco, more than a year after the proposal narrowly passed the state Senate. […] Former Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, vetoed a more limited proposal in 2018, saying then: “Fundamentally, I do not believe that enabling illegal drug use in government sponsored injection centers — with no corresponding requirement that the user undergo treatment — will reduce drug addiction.”

The lawyer urged the expansion of an FEC rule that allows candidates to use campaign funds to pay for nannies during campaign events and fundraisers. If approved, Swalwell will enjoy a job perk unavailable to most working Americans, who pay for their babysitters out of pocket or rely on family members to pick up the slack. Swalwell’s wife, a hotel executive, has traveled with Swalwell during his two recent foreign trips, including the one during which he rode bare-chested on a camel in the desert of Qatar. The U.S.-Qatar Business Council paid $19,400 for the Swalwells’ flights, lodging, and food. The Swalwells in February 2020 went on an all-expenses-paid work trip to Germany, staying in a hotel that cost $611 per night.

Rigolizzo: Canadian Province Decriminalizes Opioids, Other Drugs, Despite Overdose Deaths Nearly Doubling

A Canadian province has received an exemption from the nation’s drug law, even in the face of a growing drug crisis. The province of British Columbia was exempted from Canada’s “Controlled Drugs and Substances Act,” effectively decriminalizing possession of small amounts of illegal drugs. The exemption allows for drug users to possess up to 2.5 grams of certain illegal drugs for personal use, without having to face criminal charges. The move comes even as Canada, and British Columbia especially, is in the midst of a growing opioid crisis, but the province actually cited that crisis as one of the reasons it requested the exemption. […] The exemption covers four types of drugs: opioids, including fentanyl, morphine, and heroin; cocaine, including both crack and powder; methamphetamine; and MDMA, aka ecstasy or molly. It will cover all adults throughout the province, with the location exceptions of elementary and high schools, licensed child care facilities, airports, and Canadian Coast Guard vessels and aircraft, where it will still apply. It also does not apply to existing laws against taking drugs between provinces, and special restrictions will apply to motor vehicles, watercraft, and public transit.
