House Democrats are undercutting bipartisan legislation to bolster security for Supreme Court justices as heated protests erupt outside their homes. The Senate passed an emergency, bipartisan bill to beef up security for the justices and the Supreme Court building, sending it to the House on Monday night. Democrats in the House, however, don’t appear to be eager to get the bill passed into law. Leadership members said on Wednesday they haven’t even read the legislation, which is a single page, and they are now considering a new bill with an added provision that extends the security to the Court’s 40-odd clerks—a provision sure to turn off Republicans. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D., N.Y.) said Tuesday that Democrats are “certainly going to look” at the bill, but declined to provide a timeline on when to expect a vote. House Democratic Caucus chairman Hakeem Jeffries (D., N.Y.) told reporters on Tuesday that he has not even read the single-page Senate bill. “I assume the appropriate committee will review it,” said Jeffries, who is favored to become the next Democratic speaker.

But it’s been more than a week. How hard is it to find out who leaked that opinion to Politico? […] That decision needs to be published. Now. DeSantis-appointed judge declares Florida House map unconstitutional

Florida circuit judge on Wednesday declared the state’s congressional map unconstitutional because it drew out a black-majority district in North Florida. Leon Circuit Judge Layne Smith, a 2020 appointee of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, ordered the old map’s boundaries to be restored, The Orlando Sentinel reported. In his ruling, judge said he could not determine whether the proposed map violated the federal Voting Rights Act, but he found it violated the Florida Constitution’s Fair District amendment.

The National Science Teaching Association held training sessions for Pre-K-12 teachers to inject gender ideology into their classrooms, including referring to their students by their bodily functions to be a “better intersex ally.” One video included in the slide show says that some use language like “people with penises” or “people with vaginas” instead of “male” and “female” or “men” and “women” so as to be “more inclusive” to transgender people. That language, however, is not inclusive to intersex people. Therefore, the video continues, the way to identify and refer to others inclusively is through the bodily functions they can perform, such as “people who can get pregnant,” “people who can get other people pregnant,” and “people who are at risk of testicular cancer.” The training also tells teachers to hide information from parents if students come out to them.[…] Some tips the training gives teachers as to how to refer to their classrooms is never to say things like “ladies and gentlemen” or “boys and girls” and to instead call them other things that “[don’t] reinforce the binary.” “This language is antiquated and restrictive,” it continues. Alternatives include “lovelies,” “party people,” “kids,” and “folx.”

The inquiry, sent to the group by another, unnamed educator, asked advice on how to deal with parents peeved over teachers’ pronoun use. ‘What should we do if a parent requests that we refer to their child by the pronouns associated with their sex assigned at birth instead of their preferred pronouns, and that we use a legal name instead of a student’s chosen name?’ Butler – who panel organizers billed as a white queer cisgender female teacher on social media – read. Butler – the creator of Gender Inclusive Classrooms, the group that organized the panel – then gave way for the three other panelists, staffers at public schools across the country, to weigh in on the matter.

On Wednesday, incoming press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked who at the White House was “running point” on the baby shortage. She had no idea. Instead, she assured reporters that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was rushing to make sure formula is “safe.” She blamed “Abbott’s voluntary recall of infant formula products,” which took place after four infants were hospitalized, and two died, though there is no proven link yet with the formula itself, according to the FDA.(The White House cannot get its message straight: on Monday, press secretary Jen Psaki said the FDA had “issued” the recall.)

Meanwhile, desperate mothers are considering their options: driving for hours to find formula somewhere; trying to restart or boost breast-feeding; or even trying to create their own homemade substitutes, which the government has advised them not to do. […] Well, now we have another hunger crisis — one that affects the most vulnerable human beings in our society.

The formula shortage is finally bringing attention to the FDA’s labeling games that have angered many moms for years. […] As the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is quick to point out, they do not “approve” infant formula, but they do require manufacturers to meet certain requirements to be considered “FDA-registered.” The nutrition and quality control requirements for formulas are implemented by statute, the Infant Formula Act of 1980, and it’s the FDA’s job to enforce those federal law requirements, including the verification of imported European formulas that don’t meet their often-debated standards. This is an important distinction because it’s also the smokescreen the FDA will likely hide behind as they are pressed to loosen restrictions on importing formulas amidst the ongoing crisis of mothers staring down empty shelves in the supermarket. When angry moms ask why their European formula orders were seized by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, experts and FDA defenders point to the federal statute as a “their hands are tied” excuse. It is not illegal to import formulas into the United States, but any formula imported must be from a manufacturer that is FDA-registered, which entails meeting their strict rules for products and labels. The Senate voted 51-50 on Wednesday to confirm Alvaro Bedoya as a member of the Federal Trade Commission, adding a progressive privacy advocate to the agency and restoring a Democratic majority at a time when the FTC is poised to take on corporate giants in industries such as tech. Vice President Kamala Harris cast the tie-breaking vote for the Georgetown University law professor. Rigolizzo: Record Number Of Americans Died From Drug Overdoses in 2021, CDC Data Show

Data from the CDC’s National Vital Statistics System for the year 2021 predicted that 107,622 Americans have died from drug overdoses. The data is not final, and could be under-reported because the data is not complete, but it would mark the largest number of Americans who have died from drug overdoses on record in a single year, and an increase of about 15% from 2020, when 93,655 people died from overdoses. Overdose deaths have also increased by about 50% since 2019 when around 72,000 people died of drug overdoses. California led the nation in total overdose deaths, with 11,704 predicted deaths for the year 2021. Florida came in second, with 8,171 predicted deaths. Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Texas all suffered more than 5,000 predicted deaths. North Carolina had over 4,000. Five states suffered more than 3,000 overdose deaths, 12 states had more than 2,000 deaths, and nine states had more than 1,000 deaths last year. […] Deaths involving synthetic opioids, like fentanyl, were responsible for a large share of the deaths, The New York Times reported.

Mark Middleton’s family said that he passed away on Saturday in a statement which did not reveal the cause of death. The father-of-two lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, and local law enforcement and the county coroner told DailyMail.com that they were not investigating the death and did not respond to it.

The Middleton family did not reply to requests for comment. Middleton had for decades run an air conditioning business in Little Rock but in the 1990s he was a special advisor to Clinton and finance director on his Presidential campaign. During that time Middleton admitted Epstein to the Clinton White House on seven of the at least 17 times the late pedophile visited. Middleton also flew on Epstein’s plane and appears to have acted as a conduit between the two men. […] Several of Clinton’s former associates have died over the years in unexpected circumstances, sparking the conspiracy theory known as Clinton Body Count.

Kern: UK: New Plan to Tackle Illegal Immigration

The British government has announced a new plan to fight illegal immigration by giving some migrants seeking asylum in the United Kingdom a one-way ticket to Rwanda to have their applications processed in the East African country. The five-year pilot project, aimed at deterring migrants from crossing the English Channel, will initially focus on single males arriving illegally to the UK on boats or trucks. The plan to outsource the processing of asylum applications overseas — if it survives legal challenges that are certain to come from human rights groups and the European Court of Human Rights — could become a model for other European countries seeking to crack down on illegal immigration. Denmark, frustrated by the European Union’s dysfunctional migration and asylum system, recently announced that it, too, is seeking to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda. On April 14, the United Kingdom and Rwanda announced the so-called Asylum Partnership Arrangement in which Rwanda commits to receive asylum seekers from the United Kingdom and to process their claims for asylum through the Rwanda domestic asylum system. […] “Access to the UK’s asylum system should be based on need, not on the ability to pay people smugglers…. If you illegally enter the UK via a safe country in which you could have claimed asylum, you are not seeking refuge from imminent peril — as is the intended purpose of the asylum system — but are picking the UK as a preferred destination over others.” — New Plan for Immigration, UK Home Office.
