At least three bills would outlaw sterilizing transgender procedures for children. Republican state legislators are pushing back against the transgender movement, with a wave of new bills targeting dangerous transgender procedures for children and unfair competition in women’s and girls sports. Lawmakers filed the bills in at least 10 states, including Arizona, Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Missouri, New Hampshire, and South Dakota. In Kentucky, House Bill 253 would ban health care professionals from providing hormone blockers, transgender surgeries, or referrals for transgender procedures to gender dysphoric minors under 18 years old. The bill would categorize the practices as unprofessional conduct, subject to disciplinary action by medical boards. Parents could also sue doctors for “actual or threatened” violations of the law, as could someone who suffered a “gender transition” as a child. The US inflation rate has jumped to its highest level in nearly 40 years, adding woes for consumers and compounding the issue as a political liability for President Joe Biden. The consumer price index rose 0.5 percent last month after surging 0.8 percent in November, the Labor Department said on Wednesday. It pushed annual inflation to 7 percent in December, the highest increase since June 1982 and up from November’s 6.8 percent annual rate. A labor shortage is boosting wages, sending costs higher for businesses, and chaos in the supply chain is showing little sign of easing as Omicron sidelines workers by the millions, suggesting that high inflation could persist well into 2022.
