ANGELO CODEVILLA RIP

I inform my newsletter readers with sadness that Angelo Codevilla, a regular reader of this newsletter and one of America’s most brilliant conservative intellects, has passed away. God bless him and his family. Though too short, his was a life well lived and his work helped guide us all.

Ryan P. Williams; The Great and Good Angelo Codevilla

In memoriam –  […]  It’s hard to convey the breadth and depth of Angelo’s scholarship and experience. He was fluent in (at least) French, Italian, and Spanish, in addition to English. He translated Machiavelli’s Prince. You would ask him how to understand foreign policy properly and he would tell you to read all of John Quincy Adams’s diaries and correspondence. He had the number of the “intelligence community” long before they foisted the Russia Collusion hoax on America, having served as the lead staffer for the Republicans on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence back when real oversight could still put the fear of God into bureaucrats—even those at the CIA. From that perch he was also instrumental in congressional support for the Strategic Defense Initiative. His books on how to think about international relations and foreign policy are indispensable, especially Informing Statecraft: Intelligence for a New CenturyThe Character of NationsWar: Ends and MeansTo Make and Keep Peace Among Ourselves and with All Nations. For a wonderful short introduction to IR, see his ISI monograph, A Student’s Guide to International Relations. As influential as he was on foreign policy thinking, many came to know him for his writing on our increasingly oligarchic American regime. He wrote an essay in 2010 for The American Spectator titled “America’s Ruling Class.” It caught Rush Limbaugh’s attention (like Mike Anton’s The Flight 93 Election would six years later) and would become a short book. Rooted in his deep love of America’s founding principles, Angelo has consistently and cogently warned against the accrual of power, wealth, and prestige to a class hostile to the American way of life and republican self-government. “Our Revolution’s Logic” remains one of the most-read pieces we’ve ever published at The American Mind.

NOTABLE QUOTES

Admiral Charles Richard, August 12, 2021 on the China nuclear build-up:  “There’s been a lot of speculation out there as to why they are doing all of this. I just want to say right now, it really doesn’t matter why… What matters is they are building the capability to execute any plausible nuclear employment strategy — the last brick in the wall of a military capable of coercion.”

Robert Smith contributor to American Thinker: Look at it from Xi Jinping’s perspective.  The PRC’s leader-for-life learned nothing from Joe Biden’s abject surrender in Afghanistan, but confirmed everything that he knows about our 46th president.  Xi’s knowledge of Biden is bound to lead him to conclude — if he hasn’t already — that his window for conquest is during Biden’s tenure.  Weakness — in Biden’s case, evident gross weakness — invites predation.  It’s a law of nature and human affairs.

Ken Burns historian and documentary filmmaker when asked about the direction the U.S. is going:  “It’s really serious. There are three great crises before this: the Civil War, the Depression, and World War II. This is equal to it.”

Robert Weissberg contributor to Intellectual Takeout:Today’s political insanity might be called Compulsive Destruction Disorder (CDD). A main symptom is the irrepressible urge to undermine Western Civilization in general, particularly traditional American society. It is a wide-ranging disorder, disproportionately afflicting those in the academy and exhibited in ideologies such as Marxism and Critical Race Theory. A utopian element—transforming today’s allegedly horrible world into a paradise—is present, but CDD sufferers are not harmless daydreamers. Rather, they are energetic crusaders whose life mission is to undermine what is generally judged a good, though hardly perfect, society. Those suffering from CDD are radical egalitarians unable to live with imperfection, ever happy to upend lives, even harm millions in pursuit of their fantasies.

Daniel Greenfield contributor to Frontpage Magazine:Continuing his America Last policies, Biden is threatening to raise the refugee cap to 125,000. That’s double the current number and it’s more than the populations of Ann Arbor, Berkeley, or Hartford.

Ilya Feoktistov contributor to The Federalist: In the waning days of 2020, as COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts were summiting the highest peak of the pandemic, the Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) of Massachusetts decided that the First Amendment’s Assembly Clause does not protect private assembly by private citizens in “private homes.” According to the state’s high court, whether, when, and how the citizens of Massachusetts may gather in each other’s dens and bedrooms are all questions of “significant government interest” to the state’s governor, and are therefore within his regulatory power.

Ned Ryun contributor to American Greatness: In this age of COVID fear porn, there’s only one vaccine I really believe in: a vaccine for stupidity with booster shots for life.

April Matthews contributor to Conservative Daily Post: States with highest vax rates have highest COVID outbreaks – If you’re one of the people who can still look at data logically, this makes perfect sense: vaccinated people are shedding the virus, and the vaccine does nothing to prevent infection.

Kara Bell a Texas mother unleased her anger against school district representatives: “I do not want my children to learn about anal sex in middle school. You are not public health officials. You are supposed to be educating our children.”

U.S. SUPREME COURT

Hadro: Supreme Court sets argument date for challenge to Roe v. Wade
The Supreme Court announced Monday that it will hear arguments in a critical abortion case on Dec. 1. In the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a challenge to Mississippi’s law restricting most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, the court will decide the question of whether all state abortion bans pre-viability are unconstitutional. “Viability” is the court’s legal standard from 1973, regarded as the point at which an unborn child can survive outside the womb. The court on Monday announced the date of oral arguments in the Dobbs case, scheduled for Dec. 1. Both the state of Mississippi and the abortion clinic challenging the law will have an opportunity to present arguments in-person to justices both for and against the law. The Dobbs case is considered to be the latest and perhaps the best opportunity for pro-life advocates to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide. States, the court ruled in Roe, could not ban abortions pre-viability.

BEHIND THE DEEP STATE

Miller: Federal agencies buying up Chinese drones previously deemed a national security threat: report
The U.S. Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have recently acquired surveillance drones from the Shenzhen-based company DJI, around the same time the Defense Department deemed products from the Chinese company to be a potential national security threat, according to an Axios report. Procurement records show that the Secret Service bought eight DJI drones on July 26 just three days after the Defense Department issued a statement warning about possible threats posed by the company’s products.  Around the same time, records show that the FBI bought 19 drones from DJI.

Judicial Watch Sues HHS for Biodistribution Studies for the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson Vaccines
This lawsuit was filed after the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease failed to respond to a June 8, 2021, FOIA request for: [A]ccess to biodistribution studies and related data for the Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines used to treat and/or prevent SARS-CoV-2 and/or COVID-19. Similarly, HHS’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) failed to respond to the same request sent on July 15, 2021, after the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease advised Judicial Watch that BARDA “would be the appropriate federal agency to submit a request,” to obtain the records if they existed. Biodistribution is a method of tracking where compounds of interest travel in an experimental animal or human subject. FAUCI’S VIRUS: IT’S POLITICAL

Zinberg: Follow the (Political) Science
Both before and after the 2020 election, Joe Biden complained that President Donald Trump had politicized the Covid-19 pandemic. Biden insisted that he, in contrast with Trump, would “follow the science” and listen to the experts at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration. And yet, President Biden has pushed vaccine booster shots for all adults despite opposition from the very agencies he touted as sentinels of science. Now an outside advisory panel to the FDA has overwhelmingly rejected the Biden plan, opting to recommend boosters only for a high-risk subset of those who have received the vaccine. The administration announced plans for vaccine boosters beginning September 20 before any vaccine maker had even applied for booster approval. […] Other reports suggest widespread dissatisfaction among FDA staff and outside vaccine advisers who feel that White House political officials steered the announcement and cut key, career FDA employees out of the decision-making. Members of the CDC’s independent vaccine-advisory panel— the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)—voiced frustration that the administration announced a plan before scientists had an opportunity to review the data and approve boosters. Now the outside advisory panel to the FDA has voted 16–2 against recommending additional Pfizer shots for ages 16 and up.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS SEIZED CONTROL OF THE MEDICAL PROFESSION

Noel, MD: Why Do Doctors Go Along with COVID Panic Porn and CDC Prescriptions?
I recently had a conversation with a reasonably well informed writer who simply missed the real reasons why most practicing physicians go along with the Fauci Fraud. As a public service, I will attempt to fill in a few gaps. But first, I must define the fraud. There are two basic legs to the fraud. First is the idea that the Centers for Disease Control is in any way concerned with a mission related to its name. The failure of the CDC to endorse any treatment that did not emanate from its exalted halls should give us our first glint of clarity. There are literally millions of physicians around the world, and the great bulk of them truly wish to treat their patients well. Among those are thousands of researchers, a number far in excess of those at the CDC, the NIH, and other alphabet soup government agencies. The very idea that outside researchers are incapable of discovering anything useful without the help of the bureaucrats in D.C. is hubris of the highest order. And it prevents the CDC, the FDA, or any other such agency from considering the idea that maybe, just possibly, there might be intelligent life down here. Mount Olympus cannot be threatened. The second leg of the fraud is less visible to the naked eye but much more powerful. If I wrote this before I retired, I would be called before the Board of my group and told in no uncertain terms to shut up. I might even be assessed a financial penalty with several zeroes after the one. That’s a serious impairment of my pursuit of happiness. The reason for my group’s dislike is more than the fact that I might be an irritant. They may actually agree with what I have to say. But they simply cannot afford for me to say it. That’s right: as a practicing physician in a group, my freedom of speech can become very expensive…to the group.

JOE BIDEN IN HIS SPEECH TO THE UNITED NATIONS

“I stand here today for the first time in 20 years with the United States not at war. We turned the page”

“The extreme weather events…represent what the Secretary General has rightly called ‘code red’ for humanity. And the  scientists and experts are telling us that we’re fast approaching a point of no return, in a literal sense.”

Colman: Biden says U.S. will quadruple climate aid to poor countries
“We also have to support the countries of people that will be hit the hardest and that have the fewest resources to help them adapt,” Biden said, saying that spending combined with leveraging private financing would bring rich countries closer to the $100 billion in annual climate finance it promised to poorer nations. “This will make the U.S. the leader of public climate finance.”

CHINA: AMERICA’S MORTAL ENEMY

Coe: Chinese whistleblower claims first COVID outbreak was INTENTIONAL and happened in October 2019 at Military World Games in Wuhan – two months before China notified the world about virus
A whistleblower has sensationally claimed China deliberately spread Covid at a military tournament two months before the rest of the world knew about the deadly virus. Ex-Chinese Communist Party insider Wei Jingsheng said The World Military Games in October 2019 could have acted as the virus’ first superspreader event. The international tournament for military athletes was held in Wuhan – the origin of the Covid-19 pandemic – two months before China notified the World Health Organisation about its first cases. Mr Jingsheng claimed it was no coincidence some of the 9,000 international athletes who gathered for the event reportedly became sick with a mystery illness.

Bergman: China’s Vast New Nuclear Build-Up
China is significantly increasing its nuclear weapons capabilities. Several recent reports show that China is constructing 120 missile silos for intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) near Yumen in Gansu, up to 110 silos near Hami in the eastern part of the Xinjian region and up to 40 silos in Ordos in Inner Mongolia. ICBMs are defined as missiles with a minimum range of 5,500 kilometers, and primarily designed for nuclear weapons delivery. “The silo construction at Yumen and Hami constitutes the most significant expansion of the Chinese nuclear arsenal ever,” according to Matt Korda and Hans Kristensen, in a report on the Hami field for the Federation of American Scientists. “All told… discoveries indicate that China might be constructing nearly 300 new missile silos,” they wrote in September.

Smith: Can Xi Jinping Defeat Biden-led America?
Look at it from Xi Jinping’s perspective. By conquest, we’re not referring to anything as dramatic as an attack on the U.S.  To achieve PRC dominance, Xi would hope to avoid direct conflict with America.  War’s definition has expanded, anyway; it’s increasingly asymmetric, multidimensional. “Battlefields” include areas of perceptions manipulation, cultural subversion, infiltration, leveraging commerce, neutralizing or corrupting an adversary’s elites, financially and otherwise.  It’s possible to fight and win wars without a shot being fired.  The PRC has been conducting unconventional war against the U.S. for years now.  Uncle Sam has been slow on the uptake.  For Xi, conquest doesn’t refer solely to . . .

Buchanan: Are the US and China Stumbling Toward an ‘Islands War’?
In a diplomatic coup, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a deal last week with the U.K. and U.S. to have those Anglo-American allies help build a nuclear-powered submarine fleet for Australia. A $66 billion French deal to provide Canberra with diesel electric-powered submarines, among the largest defense contracts Paris had ever negotiated, was blown off. “A stab in the back!” said Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who had been kept in the dark on the secret talks. “There has been duplicity, contempt and lies.” Le Drian compared President Joe Biden to former President Donald Trump. President Emmanuel Macron recalled his ambassadors to both the U.S. and Australia. In two centuries of U.S.-French diplomatic relations, no such recall had ever occurred. What does this Australia First submarine deal mean?  Canberra, which has sought to steer a middle course between its great customer China and its great ally America, is coming down on the side of the Americans in the rising great-power quarrel. This “AUXUS” partnership, says Beijing, will “severely damage” peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, and Beijing is demanding to know whether Australia regards China as a “partner or a threat.” This new clash comes as China is using its military to speak for its claims to islands and islets hundreds of miles off its coast.
