More than 100 days after the January 6 melee at the Capitol, promises of high-powered sedition charges have yet to materialize. The Biden Justice Department last week announced its first plea deal related to the January 6 protest on Capitol Hill: Jon Ryan Schaffer pleaded guilty to two charges—obstruction of an official proceeding and entering the Capitol with a dangerous or deadly weapon. Schaffer, who has no criminal record, faced six counts of various trespassing and disorderly conduct offenses. (He did not plead guilty to any of the initial charges.) […] The nation’s top cops concluded Schaffer traveled from his Indiana home to the nation’s capital that day “to protest the results of the presidential election, which he believed were fraudulent. Schaffer wore a tactical vest and carried bear spray, a dangerous weapon and chemical irritant used to ward off bears.” Thanks for clearing that up. But that isn’t the full extent of the FBI’s courageous and clever sleuthing.

American Mind Editors: The Real Authoritarians
A brief response to our favorite Quislings. The time has come to address the accusation from some of America’s biggest appeasers of woke authoritarianism that we on the right are the “authoritarians” our fellow citizens should fear. The leaders of this smear campaign are people like David French, Charlie Sykes, Bill Kristol, and other self-appointed thought police of conservatism. For them, it is one step from fascism for Americans to direct governance toward the common good, i.e., toward breaking the grip of corporate oligarchs waging culture war against our country and our ways of life. Merely raising taxes on global corporations colluding to punish state legislatures is cause for pious panic from French—who insists absurdly that the oligarchs are engaging only in free speech, so lifting a political finger to challenge their play for mastery of our regime is “right-wing authoritarianism, plain and simple.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott fired off a letter to the Biden administration, and demanded that the federal government designate Mexican drug cartels — such as the Los Zetas, Sinaloa, and the Gulf Cartel — as foreign terrorist organizations. In the letter addressed to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Abbott urged “immediate action to combat the dangerous and deadly Mexican drug cartels” that “bring terror into our communities.” “They smuggle narcotics and weapons into the United States to fund their illegal enterprises,” Abbott said of the Mexican drug cartels on Thursday. “They force women and children into human and sex trafficking—enriching themselves on the misery and enslavement of immigrants. They murder innocent people, including women and children.” “These Mexican drug cartels are foreign terrorist organizations, and it is time for the federal government to designate them as such,” the Republican governor of Texas said in the letter, which was the fourth letter he sent to the Biden administration.

Russian troops are massing on the Ukraine border, Chinese vessels are swarming Whitsun Reef of the Philippines in the South China Sea, and China’s air force is flying almost daily through Taiwan’s air-defense identification zone. Chinese troops for almost a year have been dug in deep in Indian-controlled Ladakh in the Himalayas. Two large aggressors are threatening to break apart neighbors and absorb them. The Biden administration has issued warnings to both Moscow and Beijing, but neither looks impressed. American attempts to de-escalate flashpoints are seen in Russian and Chinese circles as failures of resolve.
At least at this moment, those adversaries are right to scoff at the new U.S. leader. The Chinese are especially bold. […] Beijing is no longer impressed by American power.

On April 15, Preident Biden signed an Executive Order on Blocking Property with Respect to Specified Harmful Foreign Activities of the Government of the Russian Federation. Contrary to its title, this EO is not about Russia. It is designed to allow the Biden administration to deprive American citizens and organizations of their rights and property by arbitrarily linking those persons to real, imagined, or vaguely defined activities of the Russian government. The Biden administration unilaterally makes the determination and requires neither criminal acts nor intent. The punishment is blocking assets and a prohibition on any dealing with the accused person. Spouses and adult children of individuals found guilty by accusation under this EO are punished, too. […] Biden’s new EO is directed mostly at US persons. It criminalizes speech and political activities, based on whimsical and arbitrary definitions. The Biden administration can define “malicious activities,” “democratic processes or institutions,” and the activities that undermine them as it wants. One is biological in nature, Covid-19; the other political. I believe that writer and social philosopher David Horowitz has identified the nature of that second virus. I think that he reasons that it is deadlier than COVID-19, and that its deleterious consequences are far more destructive and long-lasting than any biological infection.
