Small-Business Optimism Climbs To 99.8
Main Street sentiment turned up sharply. The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index rose 2.4 points in July to 99.8, its highest reading since August 2025 and above the survey’s long-run average. Hiring and capital-spending plans are the parts of the survey that lead the economy, and both turned up.
By the numbers
- The headline: The index rose 2.4 points to 99.8, its highest since August 2025, above the 52-year average of 0. Eight of ten components gained.
- The driver: Stronger hiring plans contributed most to the gain.
- The investment signal: A quarter of owners plan capital outlays in the next six months, up 5 points from June, the highest reading since December 2024.
- The caveat: The Uncertainty Index rose to 91, still far above its historical average of 68.
Sentiment is up, but owners are not relaxed. They are hiring and investing while still bracing for what they cannot see.
