The term “cheap fake” was coined in 2019 by Joan Donovan, the “misinformation expert” who Harvard fired for so-called “bureaucratic reasons.” The White House began using the term last week it an attempt to spin videos of President Joe Biden malfunctioning in public. The Biden campaign also reportedly created a special task force to reduce the impact of videos. Donovan, an academic noted for her research on disinformation, co-coined the term “cheap fake” in a 2019 paper called, “DEEPFAKES AND CHEAP FAKES, The Manipulation of Audio and Visual Evidence.”

Rarely have seven innocuous words, misinterpreted and then amplified, caused so much mischief. On Wednesday, Republican Gov. Jeff Landry of Louisiana ignited leftist outrage by signing a bill that requires all the state’s public school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments.

Predictably, opponents of the bill cited a paraphrased version of a line that appeared in an 1802 letter written by President Thomas Jefferson: “wall of separation between church and state.” As we shall see, the use of that “separation” phrase to attack Louisiana’s law amounts to an act of sophistry. No doubt anticipating such objections, Louisiana earmarked no state money for the mandate’s implementation, relying instead on private funds. Likewise, to affirm that the mandated display constitutes an acknowledgement of the Ten Commandments’ historical significance, not an endorsement of a particular religious creed, the law also requires a four-paragraph context statement tying the Ten Commandments to American foundational documents.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office, led by anti-Trump prosecutor Alvin Bragg, dismissed trespassing charges against 30 Columbia University protesters who were arrested for occupying a campus building. The Washington Free Beacon attended the Thursday afternoon proceedings at the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse. A trove of students and their supporters, many of whom used face masks and keffiyehs to cover their faces, streamed into the building just before 3 p.m., the Free Beacon observed. […] Once their cases were dismissed, protesters headed outside to hold a defiant press conference. One speaker, whose entire head was covered with a ski mask, said the protesters “resist the pigs, the police in the U.S.” “This is standing with Palestinian resistance,” he said. “This is an interlinking of our struggles—struggles against carceral violence, against colonialism, against racism, against genocide.” The speaker, who went by “Mickey Mouse,” later said the protesters “refuse to condemn the Palestinian resistance.”

San Francisco’s dramatic decline makes a lot more sense after Monday night’s mayoral debate revealed what far-left incumbent London Breed thinks is the most important part of the job. Candidates at the race’s second debate were each asked to come prepared with a question they could ask another one of the five competitors on stage. Breed pressed her question to former San Francisco supervisor and interim Mayor Mark Farrell, who held the office for six months in 2018. Of all the issues the incumbent mayor might have pressed Farrell on — drugs, crime, homelessness, cost of living — Breed asked Farrell if he could name three drag queens. […] San Francisco voters, meanwhile, overwhelmingly believe the city of nearly 900,000 is headed in the wrong direction, and residents are concerned about public safety and the local economy.

Shaw: California Mandates Trains That Don’t Exist

California has long been infamous for its regulatory regime, imposing harsh restrictions on businesses and individuals. This pattern has been accelerating since climate change alarmism took hold in the state, with demands for carbon emission reductions serving as an excuse to restrict or ban everything from charcoal grills to gas stoves and more. Vehicles of all sorts have been swept up in this craze, with electric cars, trucks, and buses becoming the mandatory modes of transportation. Now, however, the state has its eyes on another form of transportation. Under a new proposed rule, the operation of diesel freight trains older than 23 years will be banned so they must be replaced with electric trains. That will certainly come as welcome news to climate change alarmists, but there’s one small problem with this proposal. There are currently no fully electric trains in commercial production and there is no estimated timeline for when such trains might be commercially available given the current state of the technology. Sha’i ben-Tekoa: Boko Haram, Hamas, and Caveman Sex

On February 19, 2014, Muslims in Chibok, Nigeria, calling themselves Boko Haram, which means “Western education is forbidden,” kidnapped some 300 Christian school girls, raping them, forcing them to convert to Islam, and making them Boko Haram wives—although slaves and sex objects is a more accurate description. Some of the girls escaped; some were ransomed by the Nigerian government for millions of dollars; a third remain unaccounted for and, presumably, after a decade, are still enslaved, which also means being raped hundreds of times.

On February 19, 2018, Boko Haram enthusiasts struck again, kidnapping 110 more Christian girls from a boarding school and surely mass raping them too. Harrowing and heart-breaking reportage left the reader with the cries of the terrified girls as they were driven off in trucks after they were duped into entering them by Muslims disguised as Nigerian soldiers. Sound familiar? The world now has video from October 7 of the same Muslim behavior (although paired with murderous intent against those who were not kidnapped) in the Jews’ Holy Land.
