Under Oregon law, doctors who fail to report “unprofessional conduct” from themselves or a colleague within 10 business days can face severe penalties, including loss of license. The state’s medical board is in the process of shoehorning “micro-aggressions”—innocently intentioned behaviors interpreted by women or minorities to be subliminal communications of bias—into its definition of “unprofessional conduct,” according to the proposed rule, which the board unveiled in April.

Numerous media outlets erroneously reported the Supreme Court “ruled in favor” of access to the abortion pill mifepristone, but in reality the court dismissed the case without addressing the merits of pro-life activists’ argument, opening the door to future challenges. The reports follow the conclusion of the FDA’s appeal to the Supreme Court against the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine’s (AHM) challenge to mifepristone’s approval. A U.S. District Court had suspended the approval, but the Supreme Court reversed their ruling. Attorney Andrea Picciotti-Bayer, director of The Conscience Project, explained that the technical decision related to the parties legally involved, rather than the substance of the pro-life argument. “In many respects I can understand and I appreciate the value [of] the main point of the opinion, which had nothing to do with the FDA shenanigans and everything to do with judicial restraint,” Picciotti-Bayer told The Federalist in an interview.

President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign has released a new ad that synopsizes the Democratic effort to use criminal charges and lawsuits against former President Donald Trump. “In the courtroom, we see Donald Trump for who he is,” the ad begins. “He’s been convicted of 34 felonies, found liable for sexual assault, and he committed financial fraud.” Trump, the ad continues, is a “convicted criminal,” while Biden is “a president who’s fighting for your family.” Maybe there were times when you wondered what accounted for the swarm of legal attacks on Trump, coming from elected Democratic prosecutors and appointees of the Biden Justice Department, in late 2022 and 2023. Part of it was delayed gratification; many Democrats had long been itching to go after Trump legally, but as long as he was president of the United States, until Jan. 20, 2021, that was hard to do. But a larger reason was the coming 2024 presidential campaign.

And then one has to account for the celebrity charisma of Donald Trump, who—as evidenced by his recent rally in the south Bronx—appeals to non-white, blue-collar voters in a way that no other GOP standard bearer has.

The newest rejection of his rewrite to the decades-old Title IX law that changes the definition of “sex” to “gender identity” or ideology, comes from a judge in Kentucky who, in his preliminary injunction, protected women in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Virginia and West Virginia. Biden’s Department of Education has redefined “sex” from the 1972 law to include all sorts of alternative sexual ideologies, insisting that’s what Congress meant when it approved a ban on discrimination against men or women in school activities at the time. […] The move responsible for the multitude of lawsuits came April 29 when the DOE published the Title IX Final Rule on the Federal Register, which expanded the definition of ‘sex’ and ‘sex discrimination’ to include ‘gender identity’ and ‘sexual orientation’ as protected categories against discrimination.” That change in the law, without approval from Congress, is supposed to hit the books in August. The Biden administration has put potential normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia at the center of its campaign to pressure the Jewish state to end the war in Gaza. In a speech late last month, President Joe Biden pitched Saudi normalization as a reason for Israelis to back a plan for a permanent ceasefire with Hamas, the dominant Iran-backed Palestinian terror group in Gaza. Instead of choosing “indefinite war” and “isolation in the world,” Biden said, “Israel could become more deeply integrated into the region, including—it’s no surprise to you all—a potential historic normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia. Israel just needs to stop fighting Hamas and commit to a “credible pathway to a Palestinian state,” […] Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly rejected a trilateral U.S.-Saudi-Israeli normalization deal and has publicly rejected the preconditions—saying Israel must achieve “total victory” over Hamas and cannot tolerate a Palestinian “terror state” in Gaza or the West Bank following Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre and mass abduction of Israelis. Netanyahu’s many critics and rivals have hardly objected, and polls have shown a large majority of the public sees normalization as unimportant relative to Israel’s multi-front war against Iran and its terrorist affiliates.

Since 2016, there has been a clear pattern to left-wing conspiracies—beyond the obvious fact that they traffic in lies, stereotypes, and paranoia to serve precise political agendas. We now know that the conspiracy to cook up the Russian-collusion hoax—Donald Trump allegedly conniving with Vladimir Putin to rig the 2016 vote—was perpetrated by the Hillary Clinton campaign. Its funding was hidden by the Democratic National Committee, the law firm Perkins Coie, and Fusion GPS. The Russian “disinformation” laptop hoax—the notion that the same Russians four years later created a fake Hunter Biden laptop to smear the Biden family on the eve of the first 2020 debate—was jumpstarted by the Biden campaign’s then-chief foreign policy advisor, current Secretary of State Antony Blinken. There was never much evidence that a wayward bat or pangolin in a meat market birthed the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the efforts of China, Western and international health officials, and Dr. Fauci’s health bureaucrats to spread that lie. The January 6th riot was certainly wrong and buffoonish. But the idea that it was an insurrection aiming to violently overthrow the U.S. government was also a left-wing myth fueled by the Democratic House leadership and the media. If Biden empties the reserve again, we may not have enough to last a week. When Biden took office, he inherited the over 630 million barrels of oil left behind by the Trump and other previous administrations. This was not far off the high of 727 million barrels in 2010. Biden allowed the reserve to begin falling and then catastrophically depleted it to improve his party’s chances in the 2022 midterm elections. And he’s been at it again in 2024. Now despite failing to refill the strategic oil reserve, he’s talking about emptying it further from the 300 million barrels or so in order to have an outside chance of winning the 2024 election.

Immediately after the burnings, rapes, mutilations and murders of Jews on Oct. 7, I was not alone in noting the one moral difference between Hamas and the Nazis: The Nazis tried to hide their crimes against the Jews from the German people (and the world) while Hamas proudly publicized their crimes against the Jews to the Palestinian people (and didn’t mind that the world would inevitably see them bragging about killing Jews). In addition to videoing their atrocities, Hamas paraded captured Jews — dead and alive, clothed and naked — in front of cheering Palestinian crowds in Gaza. This leads to a sobering realization. Hamas boasting to their fellow Palestinians about what they did to Jews while the Nazis tried to hide what they did from fellow Germans means there is not only a moral difference between Hamas and the Nazis but a moral difference between the German people during the Nazi era and the Palestinian people today — and for nearly the last hundred years.

It appears that the murderers and rapists from the Gaza Strip saw Israel’s goodwill gestures as an indication of Israel’s weakness. In addition, they apparently saw the controversy in Israel surrounding the Israeli government’s judicial reform plan as a sign that Israel had become extremely weak, especially when anti-government protesters threatened to boycott military reserve service.
The October 7 atrocities serve as a reminder that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not about improving the living conditions of the Palestinians or strengthening their economy. Instead, the conflict is about the desire of the majority of Palestinians to slaughter Jews and destroy Israel.

A document compiled within the IDF’s Gaza Division less than three weeks before October 7 warned that Hamas was training for a large-scale invasion of Israel during which hostages would be taken en masse, the Kan public broadcaster revealed Monday. Titled “Detailed raid training from end to end,” the document was circulated on September 19 and was reportedly brought to the attention of at least some senior intelligence officials, but apparently ignored. It’s a perfect opportunity for a long-overdue conversation about the use of the phrase “Palestinian civilian.” Let’s get something straight from the outset: When you take hostages, you risk death. The moral and legal responsibility for any casualties resulting from the operation to free the hostages rests fully with Hamas and those holding hostages captive. Under international law, it is a sacrosanct principle that civilians enjoy special protection, and the intentional targeting or harming of them during hostilities, is a grave war crime. But one should not need to be a legal scholar to understand that if you are a journalist or physician holding hostages, you are no longer a “civilian.” In fact, the Geneva Convention makes it unequivocally clear that civilians lose that protection when they take direct part in the hostilities. In addition to the four Israeli hostages rescued from Nuseirat in central Gaza, there have been countless reports from hostages returning to Israel describing being held captive by ordinary Gazans, including families, doctors, teachers, and even U.N. employees.

The bill passed the state House by a 156-0 vote, with not a single Republican voting against it despite the bill permitting prostitution to conceive a child and exchange the term “mother” for a “person who gave birth” or “genetic surrogate.” […] The bill erases biological parents from the family equation and instead props up the LGBTQ version, and Republicans went along in full support. This goes well beyond supporting IVF and surrogacy and dangerously allows children to be considered a commodity, available to be bought and sold. The state Senate will vote on the Parentage Act imminently, and it is highly likely to pass. One thing is glaringly obvious: our society no longer protects children.

Twentieth-century politics was, to a great degree, defined by political movements that aimed to reshape society. If journalists write history’s first draft, their efforts demand extensive revision to account for both new information and the consequences of events as they emerge. Trends only come into view over a much longer term. What seemed important at first often matters less than other things that bring larger patterns into focus. Charles Maier builds on more than fifty years of scholarship to highlight important trends over the long twentieth century in The Project-State and Its Rivals. He offers four different categories of political forces to explain the political dynamics of that period. All of them stand apart from the standard dichotomies of either political left and right or liberal-democratic and totalitarian regimes. Sweeping agendas “for transforming political institutions, civil society, and even mentalities” define the first category of what he calls activist “project-states.” Resource empires marked a different kind of modernizing project, in which governments pushed colonial development as a means of exploiting their overseas territories more effectively, trying to stay economically viable and maintain their great power status. A third trend grew around what Maier calls a realm of governance in which non-governmental organizations set norms and influenced policy. Businesses backed by a network of transnational capital formed the last category. These four groups operate as collective agents in a symbiotic relationship that shaped the last hundred and twenty-five years. At the same time, this era had its own discontents which reveal important aspects of tensions in the present day.

Koenig: Maryland governor pardons more than 175,000 marijuana convictions, the largest in US history, to give criminals ‘a fresh start’

The Democrat declared the move the ‘most sweeping state-level pardon in any state,’ and said it will help reverse harms caused by the War on Drugs as he signed the order on Monday. It will include more than 150,000 misdemeanor convictions for simple possession and more than 18,000 misdemeanor convictions for use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia, the governor’s office says. Pollard Middle School, in Needham, Massachusetts, has a fairly large student body, Principal Tamantha Bibbo told the Associated Press (AP). But the sheer number of twins in this year’s eighth-grade class is “quite unusual,” she said. “We typically have anywhere from five to 10 sets at most,” Bibbo told the AP. “Given our numbers, we have approximately 450 to 500 children in each grade, so this was extraordinarily high.” […] Twins represent about 3% of live births in the United States, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, meaning that the number of twins in Pollard Middle School’s eighth-grade class is more than three times what could be expected.

A prominent Brazilian conservative who was a senior aide to former president Jair Bolsonaro has been imprisoned without trial in the South American country for four months, justified by what appears to have been an error on a U.S. government website. Lawyers for Filipe Martins, who considers himself a political prisoner of the left-wing Brazilian Supreme Court (STF), say the court is using the error on the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) website as proof to imprison him. Martins was arrested on February 8 at the order of STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who is using records showing travel to the United States — and the lack of corresponding Brazilian immigration records — as evidence that Martins defrauded the immigration system by leaving the country undetected.
