Library of Congress: Today in History – June 14

Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways–displaying the flag in the front of their homes, parades, and other patriotic observances. Prior to 1916, many localities and a few states had been celebrating the day for years. Congressional legislation designating that date as the national Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949; the legislation also called upon the president to issue a flag day proclamation every year. According to legend, in 1776, George Washington commissioned Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross to create a flag for the new nation. Scholars, however, credit the flag’s design to Francis Hopkinson, who also designed the Great Seal and first coin of the United States. Even so, Ross most likely met Washington and certainly sewed early American flags in her family’s Philadelphia upholstery shop. To date, there have been twenty-seven official versions of the flag, but the arrangement of the stars varied according to the flag-makers’ preferences until 1912 when President Taft standardized the then-new flag’s forty-eight stars into six rows of eight. The forty-nine-star flag (1959-60), as well as the fifty-star flag, also have standardized star patterns. The current version of the flag dates to July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became the fiftieth state on August 21, 1959.

Hunter Biden is dropping his lawsuit accusing Rudy Giuliani and the former New York City mayor’s ex-lawyer of manipulating data found on his infamous laptop. Biden’s lawyer Abbe Lowell filed the stipulation for dismissal Thursday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. The attorney asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit against Giuliani and Robert Costello “without prejudice, with each party bearing its own attorneys’ fees, costs, and expenses.” […] The lawsuit claimed that Giuliani, 80, and Costello violated the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act when they allegedly hacked and manipulated data on the abandoned laptop in a “total annihilation” of the disgraced first son’s “digital privacy.”

The contemporary American Left is willing to go full scorched earth to win every tactical advantage, without thinking about the long-term consequences of the precedents that their “victories” will establish. Many others have hysterically warned that the upshot of Trump’s argument is that the president is above the law. Neither of these claims is accurate. The Supreme Court has already held, in a relatively long-established precedent. . . .

Support for Hamas also coincides with the Biden administration’s and some European nations’ ongoing promotion of creating a Palestinian state right next to Israel. This move would not only open the door for more atrocities against Israelis, but would also put Israel in grave danger because the Palestinian state, even under the supposedly watchful eye of a chaperone, would essentially be ruled by the same murderers and rapists who took part in the October 7 carnage.
These European nations — Ireland, Norway, and Spain — have sent a message to the Palestinians that the only way they can get international recognition for their state is by murdering Jews.
In a similar vein, the Biden administration has communicated to the Palestinians that the October 7 atrocities have heightened their likelihood of creating a terror state ruled by the Iranian regime and its Palestinian proxies, which would be used as a launchpad to murder more Jews and destroy Israel. This is evident in the administration’s continued support for a “two-state solution.”
Most Palestinians know what the Biden administration does not want to know: that the PA leadership cannot be trusted to implement any reforms or combat financial and administrative corruption.
In addition, 54% of Palestinians polled support an “armed struggle” against Israel, an 8-point rise from the previous poll three months ago.
The results of the poll also confirm what a Palestinian state would look like: it will be a terror state funded and armed by Qatar and Iran.

On Wednesday, Michigan Court of Claims Judge Christopher Yates ruled “that the ‘initial presumption’ of validity in signature verification of absentee-ballot applications and envelopes mandated by the December 2023 guidance manual” issued by Benson “is incompatible with the Constitution and laws of the State of Michigan.” The RNC, Michigan Republican Party, and the National Republican Congressional Committee filed the lawsuit. RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said in a statement Thursday, “This RNC legal victory confirms the importance of mail ballot safeguards in Michigan’s Constitution.

On May 15, Steil requested the Cabinet secretaries provide materials regarding their work on Executive Order 14019, often referred to by critics as “Bidenbucks.” However, Steil has not received the requested documents, resulting in his issuing the subpoenas. “Elections are partisan, but our election administration should never be partisan. Allowing federal employees from the Biden Administration to flood election administration sites threatens election integrity and reduces Americans’ confidence,” Steil said. “This Executive Order is another attempt by the Biden Administration to tilt the scales ahead of 2024.

A new report from Axios reveals that the American Action Network (AAN) will spend $9.5 million focusing on the unnamed politicians who could be vulnerable in the upcoming election. AAN is a 501(c)(4) organization that can receive unlimited donations and is said to have ties to the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), the House GOP leadership’s main super PAC. While the CLF can engage in direct political advocacy, the AAN maintains its status as a tax-exempt organization by engaging in issue advocacy. Unlike the CLF, however, AAN is not required to disclose its donor list.

The Post Millennial: SPLC slashes staff by 25%, union says

The Southern Poverty Law Center, an IRS designated charity with almost a billion dollars in “reserves,” laid off a quarter of its staff. In a scathing rebuke from the SPLC Union that represents staff with the charity, the organization was slammed for the decision, which they say will have “a catastrophic impact” on the work done by the SPLC. While the union lists immigration justice and the “mission to dismantle white supremacy,” the SPLC also has expanded their “hate watch” map to include parents rights groups Christian and religious groups, critics of child sex changes, and others who do not toe the line of progressive ideology.

Montgomery: 72 Hours of Absolute Political Chaos in Paris.

The French far left has formed a unified ‘Popular Front’ for President Emmanuel Macron’s snap election, but the French right is in shambles. Electoral pacts between Marine Le Pen’s National Rally, the populist Reconquest party, and the establishment right Les Republicains (Republicans) are failing spectacularly. Macron called the legislative election, which will not affect the presidency after his party was drubbed by Le Pen’s party in the European Parliament elections. Raheem Kassam, Editor-in-Chief of The National Pulse, believes Macron and his Renaissance party were damaged by their proximity to Joe Biden in the European elections and that calling a sudden national election is an attempt to catch the populist right while it is short on resources and steal its momentum. This has seen mixed success.
