The company parks, maintains, and repairs trucks; some occasionally haul coal.

In 2019, an MSHA inspector visited the company’s facility in Emmett, West Virginia, and cited the company for repairing two trucks without using blocks to secure the wheels. The inspector claimed that the company’s sporadic coal hauling brought it under MSHA’s jurisdiction and declared that the trucks and the parking lot constituted a coal mine. […] The company’s property, by commonsense, is neither a mine nor near one. But the trouble lies in the nebulous clauses defining a mine — clauses (h) and (i) of Sec. 3 § 802 of the Mine Act of 1977. From a perusal of those clauses, there seems no reasonable justification for deciding that a parking-cum-maintenance lot for trucks (some of which may haul coal) is a mine.

This followed a confidential report by the International Atomic Energy Agency that assessed Iran has increased its stockpile of enriched uranium to more than 30 times the limit set in the 2015 nuclear deal — enough to produce three to four nuclear weapons within a week, according to experts. Theoretically, the news should have troubled officials in Washington, who often still speak as if they oppose the proliferation of nuclear weapons to rogue states that vow to destroy the US-led international order. So why, then, did the US block the effort led by its allies France and England to censure Iran?

The embassy, in the northern suburb of Awkar, ‘was subjected to gunfire by a person holding Syrian nationality.’ the army said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter. ‘Army personnel deployed in the area responded to the sources of fire, wounding the shooter,’ the statement said, adding that ‘he was arrested and transported to hospital.’ The attack came after Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Israel was ‘prepared for very intense action in the north’ in a visit to a border city hit by Hezbollah rockets.

A group of teens forced a woman to miscarry with a brutal attack after she and her husband dared to stray onto a Chicago street that the youths claimed as their own. The 41-year-old mother was returning home with her husband from a date night on Friday when they were surrounded by at least 10 young people in the city’s notorious Streeterville neighborhood. The woman, who gave her name only as Nina, told Fox32 that she was pepper-sprayed in the face, kicked in the stomach and lost a clump of hair as her husband was held back by the mob. ‘They didn’t steal anything. They said like, “we own the street, we own the street. […] Police who arrived at the scene of Friday’s attack arrested a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl. Both have been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery and have been released by police pending appearances at Cook County Juvenile Court.

A CHURCH IN CRISIS

Blake: If Churches Are Really Pro-Marriage, They Will Discipline Its Destroyers

We cannot allow unrepentant destroyers of marriages and families to reside in the body of Christ. If churches want to promote marriage, they should excommunicate more people. Conservative Christians, from academic sociologists to NFL kickers, agree that America needs more and better marriages and that we ought to prioritize families and children over mammon. Despite the freakout over Harrison Butker’s viral speech to Catholic university graduates, he was essentially right. It is undeniable that as Americans are increasingly unmarried, childless, and materialistic, they are also increasingly unhappy. There is no single cause for the vast cultural shifts behind this nor any single solution; churches alone cannot fix these problems, but they do have an essential role. Christian marriages ought to be models of love, faithfulness, and stability amid a despairing, lonely, transitory culture. Too often, they are not. To change this, church leaders need to understand not only the difficulties that bedevil forming and sustaining strong marriages and families today but also the essential help churches can provide in our culture. This help includes disciplining their members, for culture and community require that standards be enforced.

Owning a vacation home in South Lake Tahoe could get more costly if residents approve a ballot measure that imposes a tax of up to $6,000 on housing units left vacant for more than half a year.

The measure, dubbed the “South Lake Tahoe Vacancy Tax,” aims to penalize homeowners who leave thousands of homes empty in the mountain resort town; the tax penalties would go toward affordable housing, road repair and public transportation. The measure is an attempt to incentivize homeowners to rent properties out rather than leaving them vacant. Locals for Affordable Housing, the nonprofit leading the initiative, said it collected nearly 2,500 signatures to place the tax measure on the November ballot — more than the 1,159 needed.

With no appointment necessary, women in Illinois, Washington, Maryland, and Hawaii can submit a request for mifepristone and misoprostol, the two components of a chemical abortion, and within 24 hours the abortion facility mails out the drugs. The disturbing reality is that abortions carried out by Planned Parenthood are the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States, and the group is a vast organization intent on bringing abortion to every corner of the globe. […] While its objective is relatively obvious among American conservatives, what is less well-known is the sheer magnitude of the organization’s efforts abroad. According to its website, the International Planned Parenthood Federation “is a global healthcare provider and a leading advocate of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for all.” IPPF was established in 1952, and its founding members were the “family planning associations” of Germany, Hong Kong, India, the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. And I didn’t have to spend it on a college campus locked down in my dorm room with a six-foot-three female roommate with waggling male appendages and chest hair.You spent your entire college career in the long shadow of the pandemic, George Floyd, Bidenomics, accelerating crime, an unprecedented immigration wave, and the explosion of DEI rules, which put high paying jobs and graduate school admissions almost out of reach for many of you. In 2020, your government wouldn’t let you celebrate your high school graduation. Your college required you to get multiple vaccinations for your “safety,” but then looked the other way as violent protestors took over your campuses. Many have been paying attention to this shuffle of cards, watching the shakedown settle and take form in new positions. After all, these developments can have long-standing consequences not just for Russia but also for the rest of the world. The most eyebrow-raising among them was President Putin’s new Russian Minister of Defense, Andrey Belousov, an economist and civilian politician with seemingly no ties to the military. He replaced Sergei Shoigu, a longtime loyalist, drawing some criticism and surprise. However, it’s not as strange as it seems.

Beaton: Painting the Revolution

In 1853, British novelist William Makepeace Thackeray toured the U.S. Capitol with Senator Charles Sumner. Thackeray, who illustrated his own novels with sketches, was impressed by the Rotunda and its four wall-size paintings of scenes of the American Revolution: The Declaration of Independence, The Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga, The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, and The Resignation of General Washington. All were done by John Trumbull, who had died ten years earlier. “Trumbull is your painter,” Thackeray told Sumner. “Never neglect Trumbull.” It’s a telling verdict from an Englishman, an objective endorsement from the enemy, or late enemy. Thackeray seemed to grasp the scope of Trumbull’s achievement. Others depicted single events or did portraits of leading figures—Gilbert Stuart’s George Washington, for example—and a non-American, Emanuel Leutze, gave us Washington Crossing the Delaware, but only Trumbull created a suite portraying the Revolution as an unfolding narrative. Thackeray didn’t see the whole of it, which included four additional scenes: The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker’s Hill, The Death of General Montgomery in the Attack on Quebec, The Capture of the Hessians at Trenton, and The Death of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton. These eight paintings, all done in the artist’s preferred smaller size of two by three feet, plus a life-size standing portrait of Washington, complete the Trumbull series. It can be seen in full not in the Capitol but at Yale University, where it has resided for nearly 200 years. In the mid-1970s, Richard Brookhiser, then a Yale undergraduate, came upon the Trumbull paintings. The story they told seized his imagination. . . .
